Having a hard time seeing a poll that includes everything from EBM to Miami Bass and Latin Freestyle as anything but a little fractured.

agreed, it's a boring #1. i like it, but couldn't bring myself to vote for it, sounds kind of nu-disco by the numbers at this point.

Can't imagine why a group poll of a decade's worth of nebulously defined dance music would end up with an anodyne, lowest-common denominator pick.

And this poll turned out pretty coherent despite that, virtually no dubstep etc.

I feel that 80s dance cultures were if anything even more intensely tribal than they are today.

I'm no huge dubstep fanboy but I would have liked more dubstep in these results! Down with 4x4!

some of the stuff on this list is mind-boggling to me...like "Full Clip" not making it? and nothing by Stephan Bodzin? or Luciano?

i mean actually, "Full Clip" not making it feels criminal when there's some stuff on here which is....nowhere near as massive....or as ubiquitous in its time.

No Full Clip or Luciano one of the huge pluses of this poll to be frank.

Is that the real Lindstrom? If so, is this the first time an ILM poll winner links back to us? What a swell dude. As cool as it is, I still find it hard to dance to I Feel Space, though.

i will say: Lindstrom is one of the nicest people i have ever interviewed. except for when i interviewed Azari & III, it was definitely the interview that felt most like a casual conversation rather than some other sort of thing.

also, i approve of "I Feel Space" at the top.

it's funny then, because at least 50% of these tracks won't be remembered in a couple of years, either.

also anyone with ears can hear that "Liebe Ist" is a fucking rad track.

micarl., the reason why that argument doesn't stand up, to me, is that there are tons of remixes on this list! and luciano has done some rad remixes.

i think, though, that some of my problems with some of the tracks here is that they are explicitly "dance" tracks, and while i am very invested in dance music, i am more invested in "electronic" music.

thus, this remix of Salif Keita by Luciano, which ranks as one of my favorite remixes of the past ten years or so. it's so gorgeous, so lush, so ....

And yeah, Luciano deserves some sort of spot somewhere.

Bodzin's basic blueprint (robot-goth moroder) still seems pretty influential on a lot of the stuff playing in more underground gay clubs, I find.

I suppose its deliberate torpidity now would strike many as very mid-00s.

Wish I could find the 2006 Bodzin DJ set i used to listen to with stuff like "SL Mirage" and "Atlas" and "Miranda" etc. on it, felt really massive at the time.

Arguably one of the upshots of the return of "proper" techno has been the almost writing out of history of that slower hard busted-machine tech-house sound that seemed (to me) so fresh and vital throughout the mid-00s - Bodzin's sound was the more minimal-influenced tail-end of this but I really think of it taking off in about 2002/2003 with Areal, Sender, some Sami Koivikko.

I remember tunes like Misc's "Momentum" and Basteroid's "Against Luftwiderstand" were absolutely massive for me - very much in a EBM vein but too meticulous and inventive in their production values too seem retro - which ironically is probably why all this stuff now seems really "off its time".

Sass: absolutely not, I don't even think I knowingly heard any of the Aeroplane stuff in this poll before the countdown. I hadn't realised Orange Mistake was 03, that's not too bad, but Luciano is soo ridiculously overrated on here, alongside a lot of other big-room minimal schminimal. If you want to see who I voted for, my votes are postd up thead though.

Also keep in mind that mental groove era early luciano is often a lot better than the Cadenza stuff he's known for too.

Hahahah, good call Tim. I think I hadn't listened to those Cobblestone Jazz tracks for a long time and they were just working for me when I polled. If you polled me again today I'd probably only have one Cobblestone in there and no Jonson.
