Yeah that would make sense. Do things like 'Killer' and 'Got To Have Your Love' count as electro? Serious question.

I don't know, I don't feel like policing a hypothetical poll. I was born in the 80s but only 6 in 1990.

Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 11:57 (thirteen years ago)

Also a disco poll coming up iirc.

Eighties dance music is a really big umbrella, you could have people arguing about the relative merits of Into The Groove vs. Sharevari.

Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 12:02 (thirteen years ago)

And weren't there just 10 odd 80s polls?

Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 12:03 (thirteen years ago)

Would it be very different from a nineties or noughties poll? This is something I noticed about the '00s poll and the '90s poll - although we've been talking about the homogenisation of rock and dance in the '00s, the results from that decade seem to tend almost entirely towards "serious" club tracks whereas the '90s one seems to be going down a more pop-oriented route.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 31 August 2012 12:17 (thirteen years ago)

I guess that I just don't know what all would make sense to include, is Clan of Xymox electronic dance music? Skinny Puppy?

Having a hard time seeing a poll that includes everything from EBM to Miami Bass and Latin Freestyle as anything but a little fractured.

eerily similar to sentiment at start of this poll

andrew m., Friday, 31 August 2012 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

I voted for "I Feel Space", but agree with these comments on the FACT piece:

tom g • 21 hours ago −
That's their number 1? I mean it's a good enough track but where's the drama, the tension, the je ne sais quoi about it?

floranz • 20 hours ago −
Better than Resident Advisor's but Tessio would have been a better choice for #1 in my opinion

i feel zzzzzzz

The Reverend, Friday, 31 August 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

agreed, it's a boring #1. i like it, but couldn't bring myself to vote for it, sounds kind of nu-disco by the numbers at this point.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 31 August 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

Can't imagine why a group poll of a decade's worth of nebulously defined dance music would end up with an anodyne, lowest-common denominator pick.

It's a serious contender or my favourite track of all time.

And this poll turned out pretty coherent despite that, virtually no dubstep etc.

I feel that 80s dance cultures were if anything even more intensely tribal than they are today.

Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 22:13 (thirteen years ago)

I'm no huge dubstep fanboy but I would have liked more dubstep in these results! Down with 4x4!

The Reverend, Friday, 31 August 2012 22:37 (thirteen years ago)

oopz i tried to get 'solitary flight' and accidentally started downloading the entire music folder of slsk user 'doglatin'. maybe i should've and made a monstrous ilm thread judging it one track at a time.

The Reverend, Friday, 31 August 2012 22:45 (thirteen years ago)

some of the stuff on this list is mind-boggling to me...like "Full Clip" not making it? and nothing by Stephan Bodzin? or Luciano?

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Friday, 31 August 2012 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

i mean actually, "Full Clip" not making it feels criminal when there's some stuff on here which is....nowhere near as massive....or as ubiquitous in its time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_UEoLpmy1A

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Friday, 31 August 2012 22:53 (thirteen years ago)

or, let's say....the Ingrosso Re-Edit of "Swimming Places."

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Friday, 31 August 2012 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

Bodzin zux, but no Full Clip is out and out egregious!

formerly EDB (ed.b), Friday, 31 August 2012 23:02 (thirteen years ago)

No Full Clip or Luciano one of the huge pluses of this poll to be frank.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 1 September 2012 00:56 (thirteen years ago)

Is that the real Lindstrom? If so, is this the first time an ILM poll winner links back to us? What a swell dude. As cool as it is, I still find it hard to dance to I Feel Space, though.

Moka, Saturday, 1 September 2012 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

first, Bodzin doesn't suck.

second, "Liebe Ist" is a great track. we even had a thread on the album Stephan Bodzin _ Liebe Ist

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 03:07 (thirteen years ago)

also Chewshoobadoo, what do you mean? you voted for all these crap Aeroplane tracks, i presume?

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

xxp yep, real lindstrom. if we try really hard we could get a tweet from carly rae for the 2012 tracks poll.

tubular, mondo, gnabry (Merdeyeux), Saturday, 1 September 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

i will say: Lindstrom is one of the nicest people i have ever interviewed. except for when i interviewed Azari & III, it was definitely the interview that felt most like a casual conversation rather than some other sort of thing.

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 03:15 (thirteen years ago)

also, i approve of "I Feel Space" at the top.

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 03:15 (thirteen years ago)

consensus on that thread kind of explains why bodzin doesn't show up here...

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Saturday, 1 September 2012 03:25 (thirteen years ago)

eh, whatever, i like Bodzin...

also, just realized: nothing from Dandy Jack & the Junction SM record. "Arabs in the Dessert" would've been on my list.

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 03:26 (thirteen years ago)

Bodzin's sound has not dated well and I think most people understand what I'm saying here.

I can't recall a Luciano track that stands out. I mean his original track, not colab or remix.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 1 September 2012 04:07 (thirteen years ago)

it's funny then, because at least 50% of these tracks won't be remembered in a couple of years, either.

also anyone with ears can hear that "Liebe Ist" is a fucking rad track.

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 04:32 (thirteen years ago)

Awesome Luciano standalones or collabos off the top of my head:

Octagonal
Bomberos
Orange Mistake
Stone Age
Mother, Madre & Mere

"I mean his original track, not colab or remix."

du mein bestie (micarl), Saturday, 1 September 2012 05:57 (thirteen years ago)

micarl., the reason why that argument doesn't stand up, to me, is that there are tons of remixes on this list! and luciano has done some rad remixes.

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 06:24 (thirteen years ago)

i think, though, that some of my problems with some of the tracks here is that they are explicitly "dance" tracks, and while i am very invested in dance music, i am more invested in "electronic" music.

thus, this remix of Salif Keita by Luciano, which ranks as one of my favorite remixes of the past ten years or so. it's so gorgeous, so lush, so ....

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 06:27 (thirteen years ago)

anyway, that was my way of saying, "sorry for being cantankerous."

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Saturday, 1 September 2012 06:28 (thirteen years ago)

also four of the tunes I listed were original standalone tunes.

Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 06:29 (thirteen years ago)

I actually like Bodzin, but, pretty much:

Bodzin's sound has not dated well and I think most people understand what I'm saying here.

And yeah, Luciano deserves some sort of spot somewhere.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Saturday, 1 September 2012 06:57 (thirteen years ago)

Bodzin's basic blueprint (robot-goth moroder) still seems pretty influential on a lot of the stuff playing in more underground gay clubs, I find.

I suppose its deliberate torpidity now would strike many as very mid-00s.

Wish I could find the 2006 Bodzin DJ set i used to listen to with stuff like "SL Mirage" and "Atlas" and "Miranda" etc. on it, felt really massive at the time.

Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 07:23 (thirteen years ago)

Arguably one of the upshots of the return of "proper" techno has been the almost writing out of history of that slower hard busted-machine tech-house sound that seemed (to me) so fresh and vital throughout the mid-00s - Bodzin's sound was the more minimal-influenced tail-end of this but I really think of it taking off in about 2002/2003 with Areal, Sender, some Sami Koivikko.

I remember tunes like Misc's "Momentum" and Basteroid's "Against Luftwiderstand" were absolutely massive for me - very much in a EBM vein but too meticulous and inventive in their production values too seem retro - which ironically is probably why all this stuff now seems really "off its time".

Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 07:34 (thirteen years ago)

sorry, "of its time" I mean.

Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 07:34 (thirteen years ago)

2004 so pre-Bodzin, but this mix was enormous for me, I wish I still had it:

http://www.tribemagazine.com/board/dj-mixes/81986-lo-fi-glitchy-drug-beats-matt-coleridge-solution-radio-12-07-04-a.html

Tim F, Saturday, 1 September 2012 07:40 (thirteen years ago)

okay so that mix sums up a lot of what i like about that period of music, too.
