i should say classicist chicago house music (stuff like early frankkie knuckles ...) but even that i find has this subliminal anxiety about it that's not always there in italo

There is quite a difference between I Need Your Love and Tarzan Boy. Its true.
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:16 (thirteen years ago)
you mean "i want your love"?
― the late great, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:22 (thirteen years ago)
tom g • 2 hours ago −That's their number 1? I mean it's a good enough track but where's the drama, the tension, the je ne sais quoi about it?
where's your je ne sais quoi, ilm? show me it
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 31 August 2012 00:24 (thirteen years ago)
X-post Yeah, I Want Your Love. Jamie Principle song, you know what I mean.
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:26 (thirteen years ago)
i don't know what
― jed_, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:26 (thirteen years ago)
xpost
Which is actually just called Your Love. I must be pretty distracted today, not a good song to forget the name of.

I guess the midway point between those two would be Domino Dancing or something else off that Pet Shop Boys record.
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:29 (thirteen years ago)
i was thinking of chic's "i want your love" - celebratory, but mournful cause gays don't get none in the 70s
― the late great, Friday, 31 August 2012 01:11 (thirteen years ago)
OK, too many dance tunes with requests for love, loving, lieben.
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 01:13 (thirteen years ago)
Tarzan Boy and Your Love could well be my #1 and #2 in the 80s electronic dance poll if it ever happens.
― direct references of (seandalai), Friday, 31 August 2012 01:14 (thirteen years ago)
An 80s dance poll around here could be pretty contentious, strong opinions are had and a canon is by no means completely established.
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 01:20 (thirteen years ago)
The goth contingent vs. the house heads vs. the ravers vs. synth pop aficionados. There could be bloodshed.
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 01:23 (thirteen years ago)
And that's discounting whether or not hip hop is electronic dance. I'm not sure if I'm ready to decide which is better: Madonna, Schoolly D or Shriekback.
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 01:38 (thirteen years ago)
just letting you all know right now that my ballot is
1. Strafe - Set It Off2. Strafe - Set It Off3. Strafe - Set It Offetc.
― The Reverend, Friday, 31 August 2012 01:48 (thirteen years ago)
but which version?!
― ogmor, Friday, 31 August 2012 02:42 (thirteen years ago)
i can't believe i forgot to nominate and vote for "International Snootleg."
― andrew m., Friday, 31 August 2012 05:09 (thirteen years ago)
did somebody mention italo? Plenty of anxiety in Italo!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W5SVt-zirM
― dan selzer, Friday, 31 August 2012 07:37 (thirteen years ago)
but seriously folks, the italo with the biggest influence on chicago/detroit and later european, techno, is pretty dark/melancholy/anxious stuff. A far cry from the pop hits.
Totally up for an '80s dance poll - electro/b-boy flavoured hiphop would be most welcome.
― This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 31 August 2012 08:52 (thirteen years ago)
ITALO might actually be the word we're looking for!

how about an italo megapoll??
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 31 August 2012 09:02 (thirteen years ago)
Tuomas is going to run an Italo poll as part of the neverending ILM Ballot Poll series.
― direct references of (seandalai), Friday, 31 August 2012 09:23 (thirteen years ago)
Italo poll absolutely!
― Chewshabadoo, Friday, 31 August 2012 11:26 (thirteen years ago)
I think my 80s dance music poll ballot would look suspiciously like Mixed up The Hague.
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 11:42 (thirteen years ago)
In Der Hague, gah. Bedtime.
Maybe allow seventies stuff as well, if only because it could include italo and kraftwerk and stuff.
― This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 31 August 2012 11:44 (thirteen years ago)
and Jethro Tull
― I've been to Suffolk (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 31 August 2012 11:45 (thirteen years ago)
I could see maybe a 78-88 poll, that would cut off most of rave proper and allow later disco in.
Don't really feel like disco and rave belong to the same era, at least not when we're talking classic Chic sort of stuff.
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 11:54 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah that would make sense. Do things like 'Killer' and 'Got To Have Your Love' count as electro? Serious question.
― This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 31 August 2012 11:55 (thirteen years ago)
I don't know, I don't feel like policing a hypothetical poll. I was born in the 80s but only 6 in 1990.

Also a disco poll coming up iirc.
― direct references of (seandalai), Friday, 31 August 2012 12:00 (thirteen years ago)
Eighties dance music is a really big umbrella, you could have people arguing about the relative merits of Into The Groove vs. Sharevari.
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 12:02 (thirteen years ago)
And weren't there just 10 odd 80s polls?
― Josiah Alan, Friday, 31 August 2012 12:03 (thirteen years ago)
Would it be very different from a nineties or noughties poll? This is something I noticed about the '00s poll and the '90s poll - although we've been talking about the homogenisation of rock and dance in the '00s, the results from that decade seem to tend almost entirely towards "serious" club tracks whereas the '90s one seems to be going down a more pop-oriented route.
― This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 31 August 2012 12:17 (thirteen years ago)
I guess that I just don't know what all would make sense to include, is Clan of Xymox electronic dance music? Skinny Puppy?
Having a hard time seeing a poll that includes everything from EBM to Miami Bass and Latin Freestyle as anything but a little fractured.

eerily similar to sentiment at start of this poll
― andrew m., Friday, 31 August 2012 14:04 (thirteen years ago)
I voted for "I Feel Space", but agree with these comments on the FACT piece:
tom g • 21 hours ago −That's their number 1? I mean it's a good enough track but where's the drama, the tension, the je ne sais quoi about it?
floranz • 20 hours ago −Better than Resident Advisor's but Tessio would have been a better choice for #1 in my opinion
― azaera, Friday, 31 August 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)
otm
― The Reverend, Friday, 31 August 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)
i feel zzzzzzz
agreed, it's a boring #1. i like it, but couldn't bring myself to vote for it, sounds kind of nu-disco by the numbers at this point.
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 31 August 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)
Can't imagine why a group poll of a decade's worth of nebulously defined dance music would end up with an anodyne, lowest-common denominator pick.

It's a serious contender or my favourite track of all time.
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Friday, 31 August 2012 21:45 (thirteen years ago)
And this poll turned out pretty coherent despite that, virtually no dubstep etc.
I feel that 80s dance cultures were if anything even more intensely tribal than they are today.
