Maybe this impression of the list is reinforced by Spotify not having most of the Detroit tracks.

It seems like the list gravitates towards a maybe a more trance friendly sound?

Like the disco stuff is sort of trancy, the Kompakt stuff is trancy, etc.

OK if you use Kraftwerk as a sort of quintessentially European form of dance music, heavily informed by the classical tradition.

Its where a lot of Italo comes from, EBM, Trance Europe Express.

Trancy meaning music that isn't explicitly Detroit or Chicago influenced and more in line with Moroder or Kraftwerk.

Yeah, I know how influenced by Kraftwerk and Moroder the Detroit techno guys were.

Yeah I think italo is the least misleading way to describe it.

a lot of this stuff has the wide-eyed optimism of italo that i don't pick up in all but the most classicist house music

i should say classicist chicago house music (stuff like early frankkie knuckles ...) but even that i find has this subliminal anxiety about it that's not always there in italo

Tarzan Boy and Your Love could well be my #1 and #2 in the 80s electronic dance poll if it ever happens.

An 80s dance poll around here could be pretty contentious, strong opinions are had and a canon is by no means completely established.

The goth contingent vs. the house heads vs. the ravers vs. synth pop aficionados. There could be bloodshed.

And that's discounting whether or not hip hop is electronic dance. I'm not sure if I'm ready to decide which is better: Madonna, Schoolly D or Shriekback.

but seriously folks, the italo with the biggest influence on chicago/detroit and later european, techno, is pretty dark/melancholy/anxious stuff. A far cry from the pop hits.

Totally up for an '80s dance poll - electro/b-boy flavoured hiphop would be most welcome.

I could see maybe a 78-88 poll, that would cut off most of rave proper and allow later disco in.

Don't really feel like disco and rave belong to the same era, at least not when we're talking classic Chic sort of stuff.

Eighties dance music is a really big umbrella, you could have people arguing about the relative merits of Into The Groove vs. Sharevari.

Would it be very different from a nineties or noughties poll?This is something I noticed about the '00s poll and the '90s poll - although we've been talking about the homogenisation of rock and dance in the '00s, the results from that decade seem to tend almost entirely towards "serious" club tracks whereas the '90s one seems to be going down a more pop-oriented route.

I guess that I just don't know what all would make sense to include, is Clan of Xymox electronic dance music? Skinny Puppy?

Having a hard time seeing a poll that includes everything from EBM to Miami Bass and Latin Freestyle as anything but a little fractured.
