up there with the best debut singles of all time. thought it would place one or two higher though, but i can guess what beat it.

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

i'm getting a bit giddy that my number 1 might be the overall number 1 now, don't think it's ever happened on an ilm poll before.

second only to popcorn (or something), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

came low in my poll and maybe shdn't've been there at all, or shd've been much higher, i dunno, i think i voted from "importance" slightly which is totally against my usual method. but it's unquestionably spectacular no matter what my relationship is to it on any one day

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

some of my absolute faves are not gonna make it

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

neither of my top 2 has placed yet

My intro to "Wuthering Heights" was the '86 version. Is it ok if I prefer it?

Yeah. I think I underrated this on my ballot as I figured it was a lock for the top three; love Tom's writeup on it for Popular:
http://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2008/07/kate-bush-wuthering-heights/

I was one of the #1 votes for "Nocturn" - everything I'd loved about Kate Bush ~The Ninth Wave with added balearic majesty; I think it was Tim in the OG Aerial thread that mentioned Talk Talk/Bark Psychosis/"Halcyon+On+On"/"Under The Sun" as reference points. I wish I'd had the chance to hear it at the end of some kind of Studio DJ set as the sun was rising.

we aren't here to judge

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

i'm really looking fwd to individual ballots, the order of some of this list has really surprised me (eg "suspended in gaffa" and "pull out the pin" respectively)

you've just reminded me of that wonderful ewan pearson '...and so to bed' mix where he finishes with it, must dig that out.

I once saw Balearic Mike start off a boat party set with 'Nocturne', just as we started moving along the coast. It was a glorious moment.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

xp i think i've got it on a cd somewhere, it's from several laptops ago. if i can find it, i will.

the last time I listened to this song I was rushing to pick up my kid from preschool while my wife was having a miscarriage in the hospital and I cried like a fucking little girl. and now I will always associate this song with that moment.

"this woman's work" might be The Most Moving Song Ever

oh Shakey

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

Tremendously moving. She really tapped into something when she created this song. Love the Director's Cut version of this as well. Voted for that one.

Loo Reading (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

toyed with voting Director's Cut versions of this and "Deeper Understanding" but in the end i didn't specify cos it seemed too challopian

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

This blew up recently due to some film or something iirc? It was a lot harder to find nice clips to choose from

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

Six albums already represented in the top 10, that's a wider spread than I would have expected. (Tho I'm guessing none of my Red Shoes faves are in the top 3.)

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah. I think I underrated this [Wuthering Heights] on my ballot as I figured it was a lock for the top three

i figured it would be much more drastically underrated, pleased to see it finish so high

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

The vastly underrated Lionheart is still going to be vastly underratted, isn't it?

Guilty_Boksen, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

Kinda wondering if the top three is all gonna be from side one of Hounds of Love.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:24 (thirteen years ago)

amazing how TWW was written *specifically for* She's Having A Baby and directly inspired by the script! something else to thank John Hughes for.

piscesx, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

was it?! that's remarkable. add me to those who can't listen to it without welling up a little.

second only to popcorn (or something), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

aye. from NME: "It was written for John Hughes' film She's Having A Baby. Really light comedy about this young guy who gets married, very much a kid. His wife is pregnant and it's alright until they get to the hospital and the baby's in the breach position.
That's the sequence I have to write the songs about and it's really very moving, him in the waiting room, having flashbacks of his wife and him going for walks, decoration... It's exploring his sadness and guilt, suddenly it's the point where he has to grow up. He'd been such a wally up to this point."

still blows my mind!

piscesx, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

If she called me a wally I would kill myself.

Add me to the wellers-uppers. TSW gets knocked a lot for its sound, but this track is one hell of a production job - that's how to build a climax imo.

One of the reasons I suspect I didn't vote is that 'Ken' (a song written specifically for The Comic Strip) Is maybe my favourite and I would be crushed now it's not placing.

still getting excited!

second only to popcorn (or something), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

i feel like this is over-rated in this context, but that cd be partly over-exposure. but nah, i don't buy it as the third best song of her career. still brilliant, obv.

just one little Tayto (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

aghhh. My #1. Great photo, IK! Would buy this single with that cover : )

Trying not to refresh this thread like it was an eBay auction ending.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

This one was beloved of late voters. It had a terrible first third of the poll - joint ninth after twelve ballots - and thereafter went on a tear. When I went to bed on the brink of closing the voting it had climbed to fifth; the last three ballots lifted it into the top three.
