weird. as we near the top 10, i'm placing fewer of my votes. "the big sky" is the only one so far today.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

A few thoughts:

And Dream of Sheep -- the song where Tori Amos was born, for better or worse, and historically my favorite from "The Ninth Wave." I read recently that Rolling Stone, in its HoL review in 1986, suggested that Barry Manilow could have quite the hit with it!

Experiment IV -- I absolutely love this, from the rocket snare to even what she does with the overtly *rock* guitar rhythms. But more than anything, there's something striking and mysterious about a woman with such a luxurious voice singing about secret military experiments. And the end with the helicopter is positively terrifying.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

Only 5 of mine so far I think, meaning at least three won't place. Niggling feeling that "Aerial Tal" may be a casualty.

direct references of (seandalai), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

That's 8/10 for the Dreaming so far... I am assuming Suspended in Gaffa will make the cut, but will Get Out of My House? Will the donkey braying ensure a place in the top ten?

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 15:47 (thirteen years ago)

It's virtually impossible to choose a favourite moment from a career so strong, but this next one would have a good claim on mine.

^^^^ my favorite Aerial moment

Mine as well

Loo Reading (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, Aerial is making a really strong showing so far. Nice.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't participate but I did a lot of KB listening this last week
"The Dreaming" (the song) is an insane bit of writing and I can't deal with it
Like, even when I was 11 I was like "this is weird and offensive to hear"
But "SEE THE LIGHT RAM THROUGH THE GAPS IN THE LAAAND!" holy god what a SONG!

nedless summer (Ówen P.), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

that RaiUno clip is like the most wrongous staging possible

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

the part where her voice cracks ever so slightly when singing "i can hear her singing" before the little brown jug bit almost brings me to tears every time

diamonddave85, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

"sat in your lap" - in the right mood i enjoy this a lot, but it's also sometimes a bit much sonically, but i'm so taken with the sentiments behind it

lex pretend, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

'Sat In Your Lap' is a tremendous way to announce your presence at the start of an album, but man do I dislike 'The Dreaming' (the song itself).

Matt DC, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

"a coral room" was my higher-ranking 'aerial' vote, so gorgeous

The Sensual World (1989) / Director’s Cut (2011)
video

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

i was pretty disappointed with the 'flower of the mountain' version that got rid of the ooooooo yesss parts, which imo was what made that song

diamonddave85, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

'Sat In Your Lap' was my no 1...a bit random really but my god what a way to start an album...gets me every time...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

i do not approve of this image selection

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

wow. i like the track but placing this high is just crazy. also the Director's Cut version is maybe my least favourite Kate track aside from King Of The Mountain :-(

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

director's cut is mostly abominable though

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

Heh sorry xp. I originally intended a bodies-only version but it turned out a bit ... meatlike. Back to wholesomeness shortly.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

Christgau re "The Sensual World": it could "give Henry James a boner."

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

I always loved that.

A Coral Room was my #2 -- I contemplated it for #1, but couldn't quite pull the trigger. Courtesy of Kate:

"The song is really about the passing of time... I like the idea of coming from this big expansive, outside world of sea and cities into, again, this very small space where, er, it's talking about a memory of my mother and this little brown jug. I always remember hearing years ago this thing about a sort of Zen approach to life, where, you would hold something in your hand, knowing that, at some point, it would break, it would no longer be there."

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

Into the top ten.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

just look at it gooooooooooooooooo

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

I used to think "Hello Earth" was little more than a coda to "And Dream of Sheep" but these past few weeks I've come to love it. The Florian Fricke stuff is awesome -- and part of me wonders if that's Peter Gabriel is sampled in there somewhere as well.

Only demerit: I always think of that one line that goes "I get out of my car/And step into the night" as: "I get out of my dreams/And into my car..."

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

The first two ballots in had Hello Earth at no.1 (including my own) and I thought: ohhhhh... It got drawn back in soon enough, but that was quite the start.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

director's cut is mostly abominable though

i listened to it last night and it was fun!

think of it as a live album

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't vote in this, but Hello Earth would have been my #1.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:35 (thirteen years ago)

lol @ naive teen idol and also damn u! my number 3, i always think of it as 'the ninth wave' sibling to 'cloudbusting'. the chords sound similar but i'm not very good on formal/technical stuff so may be way off.

second only to popcorn (or something), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

Listened to 'Hello Earth' earlier and instantly realised I made a mistake leaving it off my ballot. I would say that more than any other part of 'The Ninth Wave', I can't seperate it from 'The Morning Fog' which follows it.

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

I couldn't say what moves me most about it: the spectral vocals (both sections), the shifts in perspective from delicate to epic, the touch of the divine... It's an incredible thing.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

Kate the astronaut, viewing earth from the moon, blocking it out with her hand. If there was ever an instance where the awe in the music perfectly matches those in the lyrics.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

I started my ballot with this in the #1 spot.

Don't know how to put the video in links, so sorry for bombing the thread but this is a cringeworthy gem.

In high school a friend of mine asked me for a tape with Breathing on it because he thought it sounded sexy and wanted to use it to get his girlfriend "in the mood." I refused and tore a strip off him verbally. Don't regret it.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

There's plenty of Kate songs to get 'in the mood' but 'Breathing' isn't one of them.

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

there's always "Jig of Life."

yeah, it's the only thing i really regret leaving off my ballot. cut it cuz hounds of love was already overrepresented.
