I totally missed this track. I don't think I've ever heard it.

2. Luomo - Tessio (729 points, 23 votes, 3 first place votes)
Year: 2000
Youtube: http://youtu.be/DeQchIQOL6I

I should point out, despite finding it depressing, I think it's one of the best singles I've heard this year and lyrically astounding in the context of the actual music.
― Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, November 11, 2003

I have already told mrs Adam I want this song played at my funeral! Just because! I listen to it almost every day!
― a real live British pub hooligan (nordicskilla), Sunday, June 26, 2005

Tessio remains my fave, being the my introduction to him. I hadn't heard House beautiful as this since Blaze's "Basic Blaze" album. For a guy that spends too much time in a suit, this stuff is life-affirming.
― Nik (Nik), Friday, March 14, 2003

That's funny Jed because when I listen to the album the re-recording of "Tessio" sounds quite out-of-place with the rest of it, missing the sense of harmonious unity which very strongly characterises the best tracks - "The Present Lover" (although again it's v. slightly inferior compared to the version on Digital Disco), "Could Be Like This", "What Good", "Shelter". If I were basing an assessment of the two albums on comparing the two versions of "Tessio" I would have to agree with you; as it is I love them pretty much equally.
You're right though that length is sort of the point: trying to reach for a sort of becalmed tantric intensity. And certainly on both albums the nuances of the groove shift so much over the course of a track that an evaluation of whether they "do much" is entirely based on the zoom of your aural lens - from outerspace earth looks pretty non-eventful too...

Moka, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 05:56 (thirteen years ago)

Yay for #3! "So Weit Wie Noch Nie" is the epitome of sweet, sad house music! Also, the genius sample should shut up anyone who thinks German is an ugly language. The way the the end of the second vocal line reverbs – "Wir jagen die Monotonie - tonie - tonie - tonie..." – is nothing short of sublime.

And here it is, ILM's most loved 'electronic dance' track of the past 12 years:

well...ok

I had fun doing this. Hope you enjoyed it and found something worthwhile in here. Also sorry if I chose weird hours to publish the winners, I've been having a busy month. Here's the full list of results:

Moka, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:07 (thirteen years ago)

If Tessio had won the poll we would have had Luomo at both ends. Think about it.

Moka, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:08 (thirteen years ago)

i like both, i keep the Janet 12" next to R&B Drunkie in the box. i have been playing the Janet much more often recently.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr)

haha that's soo not my quote.

anticlimactic #1 in my eyes but can't argue with that.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:11 (thirteen years ago)

The three versions of "Blind" had ~688 points if added together, which would have secured it #3; the two versions of "Flowers" had ~375, bumping it up to #17.

Wouldn't have guessed most of this top 10; can't complain and I've already discovered some pretty big blind spots. Thanks so much, Moka/TLG!

etc, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:19 (thirteen years ago)

For a while Jurgen Paape had the top spot. I think most of the voters got confident about it placing at the top and it got affected by it. Noone gave it a 1st place vote and from what I recall half of the ballots that had the song gave it less than 20 points.

I'll do heresy against these results but I've never really understood the appeal of 'I Feel Space'. I don't see it working on a dancefloor (or at least it failed miserably that one time I heard it on a club) and it's not layered enough to be 'trip' music. I love Lindstrom and I think the track is ok but I would never rate it top 10 of the 00s.

Moka, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:19 (thirteen years ago)

My number one, too. Did I miss it, or did Dexter not place?

toby, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:20 (thirteen years ago)

(also, looking back at my ballot, due to a c+p error I think I voted for "Poney pt 1" twice, heh)

xp Dexter's #21.

etc, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:20 (thirteen years ago)

eww

Definitely heard it working at Fabric back in the day, fwiw.

xp thanks, totally missed that!

I don't think I know the Juan Maclean track, either. Surprised to find two things in the top ten that I don't know!

toby, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:21 (thirteen years ago)

Anyhoo, speaking as a casual observer I think this might be one of my favorite polls on ILM, results-wise. There were lots of pleasant surprises throughout, a couple of things I overlooked and which I've kept repeating all week, the top 10 wasn't all that predictable and overall I didn't really hate any of the songs that made it.

Moka, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:22 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yeah, there were some ballots that had double-votes and song that were not on the noms list. I didn't count those. (Which means I did count the higher vote and removed the lower double).

Moka, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:24 (thirteen years ago)

I really hate the lyrics/vocals of tessio. I mean, the vocal production or w/e soundsamazing of course, but the words are so terrible.

i'm trying to write a "most overhyped record of year" thing about this for my neglected blog, but i barely even understand why people are hyping this in the first place, which is making it really hard to explain how it's been over-hyped.
OK "i feel space" is fine (if you missed out on faze action and yellow sox and the rest of the great lost first and second wave of space-disco on nuphonic and u-star and versatile and discfunction and repap in the first place) but this album ... GAH ... it really IS fila brazilia all over again!

― vahid (vahid), Thursday, 5 January 2006 10:34 PM (6 years ago)

BTW in one month it is the TENTH ANNIVERSARY of the release of faze action's "in the trees", dig it out if you need to (although i've always had it on hand for the TEN YEARS) and it'll take your head off.
that single is ETERNAL and PERFECT like the first NEU album or like "in the light of the miracle". we'll see if people remember lindstrom a year from now.

also, while you are at it, dig out yellow sox "flim flam", another space disco track from ten years ago that ruins all nu-nu-space-disco pretenders.

I don't believe that anyone intentionally voted for the OG "Flowers" - it wasn't even released as a single. Could this have been a mistake of someone accidentally nominating the original and then people accidentally voting for it?

Tim F, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:28 (thirteen years ago)

we'll see if people remember lindstrom a year from now.

as usual this is always the silliest prediction to make.

Given the rise of edits culture in the second half of the 00s this actually makes perfect sense to me.

― Tim F, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 6:28 AM (6 minutes ago)

Guilty as charged - turns out the version I know / thought was the original is, in fact, an edit of the Sunship mix - thank poorly labelled bargain-bin garage/2-step cassettes/CDs and Slsk for me being under this impression for over a decade. I actually can't seem to find the original "Flowers" to see what it sounds like - the version on both the SFA album and the single is the Sunship remix.

etc, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:37 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I assumed it was the sunship rmx as well

xp interesting point

check my slipknot shred on youtube (blank), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:46 (thirteen years ago)

yeah but i still think faze action and yellow sox are better than windstorm

the late great, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:47 (thirteen years ago)

lindstrom

the late great, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:47 (thirteen years ago)

it would not have been a silly thing to say if people had forgotten about lindstrom tim

the late great, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 06:47 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah ok I'm definitely down with R&B junkie being the highest ranked edit here, now that I think of it in that way.

Even though I can agree with "In The Trees" being better, like anyone was ever going to forget the most "overhyped record of the year".

I feel the same about "Hyph Mngo" (vis a vis, oh, say, DJ Abstract's "Touch") but I still expect it to top lots of retrospective "dance tunes of 2009" lists in the future.

Tim F, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 07:32 (thirteen years ago)

i am not sure i know that track though the name rings a bell, I think maybe i heard oneman or fourtet play it

the late great, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 07:42 (thirteen years ago)

OK, this has been a very fun (and very very ILM) list, and the Spotify playlist has lightened my days immensely.

Thanks for compiling and posting, Moka!

I feel bad now that I didn't vote, but I feel quite happy and comfortable with that number one.

Great rollout Moka.

Surprised to see how many I know. Must have been keeping up better than I thought.

Do we get to see individual ballots at any point?

bidfurd, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 08:26 (thirteen years ago)

can't believe happy house was so high, really just doesn't even register for me.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 08:28 (thirteen years ago)

Really, I wouldn't have been surprised if it was (I shouldn't have bought a british laptop cause now I have no idea where the number symbol is on this keyboard) 1.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 08:42 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, I'm really not hugely that familiar with a lot of the top ten.

Lol, my number one was 331 with a bullet. :D

Can we have a complete rundown yet please?

Oh I see - it was posted above. My bad. My number 1 was 356

Remember you can talk to me any time, asshole (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 09:15 (thirteen years ago)

Were any of those MFA votes (including the first place vote) supposed to be for the remix? Not sure I've ever heard the original, guess it could also be really good?

Agreed that all of the Flowers votes were surely for the remix, though.

toby, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 09:18 (thirteen years ago)

Is it okay to post our ballots then? Here was mine. I take it "Body Rock" comes under the banner of verboeten non-house/techno tracks which was why I seemed to be the only person who voted for it.
