slightly embarrassed that the only one of these who's ever made a song i really really love is lupe fiasco (only the one song though)
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 12:21 (thirteen years ago)
a$ap rocky has a decent grasp of what he does and it's something i can get into in a very specific mood but he's reeeeealllly not a good rapper
chief keef is just boring, don't hear anything noteworthy either way there at all

given these options, I'm going Lupe
― jjjdoom (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 12:40 (thirteen years ago)
Tempted to vote Lupe just for 'Heirplanes', clearly the best thing he will ever do.
Prefer ASAP mixtape over Keef by a tiny margin, but will go with Keef 'cos I'm more interested in what he'll do next than the other two.

I don't really think Keef will "do" much outside of perhaps pumping out a couple of more underground bangers worth our time. I Don't Like and 3Hunna are more exciting than anything the other guys have done this year though.
A$AP is currently at a stage where just about every critic is tired of him - while his audience is growing every day. I'd say there's at least a small chance that he'll be making some good music a couple of years from now. We'll see. He'll need some songs though.
Lupe's days are over. He has crossed a certain line and these days his very presence is painful. I'll probably never enjoy a Lupe song again. But between F&L and The Cool he has made more great music than either of the other two guys are likely to make in their lives.
Take that as you will.
― insane in my mansplain (longneck), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 13:16 (thirteen years ago)
ILX (deej I think) pointing out that every ASAP song has a slowed down basso profundo dude chorus almost killed him for me.
Agreed "I Don't Like" and "3Hunna" are best of anything.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 13:17 (thirteen years ago)
"Lupe's days are over."
Dogg, his record sales go up every time even though the record industry is crashing
― jjjdoom (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 13:20 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, that's pretty crazy since just about everybody hated Lasers. I don't know how to explain that really.
But seeing as he's now trying to revert to an older style in order to please the fans who hated his "experimental" phase, I'd say that his days as a musical force (which I think he was, briefly, around the time of The Cool) is over.

ASAP is the worst to me, GQ fashion plate w/ 3-4 good songs
― The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Thursday, 30 August 2012 03:45 (thirteen years ago)
Lupe has the better catalog than Keef, although obv a decade lead time helps out in that case. I think Keef is probably one of the most exciting new rappers out right now, and although he has a spottier hit rate than other guys in his scene when he cuts through it feels like a ~big deal~, like despite like durk's record more or thinking a dude like Ice Burgandy (from LA) has a more consistent record, or thinking that Feva has released MORE good songs this year, or that Gucci is still making consistent music, Keef's biggest tracks feel like much more major & impactful records to me
also what lagoon said about the craft beer, except its artisinal beer.
lupe's new stuff is pretty weak & as a lyricist he could really use an editor. i think his strength is actually not where he thinks his strength is. he's good at building sympathy w/ emotionally direct appeals cf "hip hop saved my life" & that time he did a version of anthony hamilton's "comin from where I'm From"
ASAP ... dude is like a fashion mag editor's idea of what a rapper is supposed to be. I just can't connect w/ it, it feels like a dude playing rapper dress-up.
― The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Thursday, 30 August 2012 03:51 (thirteen years ago)
despite *liking* durk's record more
also i dont feel like asap has much of a sense for pop immediacy or hooks or any of that.

this kind of discussion is like when you were saying the durk tape had no hooks, if its clear many people disagree with your description of the record purely on the objective facts of it, even those who might share your subjective take on the tape's quality. its not like someone made these songs happen through some kind of tinfoil hat conspiracy, they spread pretty damn organically because people found them memorable. you cant just will things to be different than they are.
― The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Thursday, 30 August 2012 03:55 (thirteen years ago)
im thinking 'exciting' probably sounds like too much of a ... idk trivialization or whatever, but his music --i used the word 'cuts' i think thats p apt, it really has a visceral pull that feels unmatched & ime that tends to drive street rap's direction, so i guess its not just keef's next moves that interest me, but how rap responds to him

i think the basic nature of it is what makes it memorable
― jjjdoom (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 30 August 2012 04:53 (thirteen years ago)
smh @ even arguing in this "thread" BUT the idea that "i don't like" is unmemorable really is something i can't comprehend -- & i'm not even saying bcuz i think the song is awesome, but i've seen so many times irl people that don't even listen to rap reciting/singing/talking about that song. that hook is just instant, completely & totally. (which in of itself doesn't mean the song is great, but just saying)
― young money color me badd (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 August 2012 04:56 (thirteen years ago)
like i think 99% of people who don't even like the song would a. at least admit that the hook is memorable b. argue that they don't like the song because the hook is so "memorable" in a basic/instant way
― young money color me badd (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 August 2012 04:59 (thirteen years ago)

ok i'm relistening to "i don't like" and the hook is...existent, i guess? but it's so dreary, it's a terrible hook and the whole song just draaaaaaags boringly. WHY ARE HIP-HOP AND R&B SO SLOW THIS YEAR? I cannot move to this. the verses are the same as the hook and nothing happens, it's like a really really shit soulja boy song (and i have a lot of affection for soulja boy) (like TURN MY SWAG ON, that is what i expect of a rap banger). his voice is so whatever. he could literally be anyone.
i'm not interested in the "but he's popular" argument. lots of boring people get popular.

HARD IN DA PAINT. NO HANDS. GOOD FUCKING NIGHT. NIGGAS IN PARIS. 212. MONEY ON THE FLOOR. BEAM. Those songs are what I expect from rap bangers.

Actually keef brings a new style : this way of rapping verses like it is a hook while being very pissed off but letting the anger only come out through his voice and restraining it.
This seems like a logical development from waka's style.

i've found lex's taste in rap music to have been pretty retarded this year, like ytf would anyone want "i don't like" to sound more like "niggas in paris" ?
― flopson, Thursday, 30 August 2012 19:23 (thirteen years ago)
i don't think it needs to sound more like anything. if anything i'd prefer it sounded less like the billion other songs w/ lex luger hi-hats out there, i don't really get much unique out of it.
― some dude, Thursday, 30 August 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)
even as far as post-luger stuff goes i think that beat is pretty unique
― young money color me badd (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 30 August 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 30 August 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)
xxxp agreed. it's the incessant repetition of a rather singular melody that makes it stand out. and keef's style just enhances it.

young chop is far from being a lex luger ripoff imo, his beats are more melodic and the rolling snares are usually a bit faster and longer in duration. Luger is def chop's main influence but he's not a copycat.
