Maybe it depends on whether you associate the song with late 90's alt rock or with the best sitcom (apparently) in the history of the world? I dunno, but I like it...

I like it -- the combination of nerdgoof 90s style plus loud distorted guitar and bass noise going on constantly in the background appeals to me. The lyrics might be harder to swallow if the guitars weren't so noisy, but that not being the case, this is a very cool and unique pop song.

Three Word Username, Sunday, 26 August 2012 09:53 (eleven years ago) link

Never heard it before Peep Show. Was incredibly drunk on my birthday last year and went to a US vs UK 90s night (it was awesome) and they played this and I was in such a state that I couldn't work out why they were playing the theme music to the best sitcom in the history of the world :D

There's a feedback/noise solo buried during the last chorus that no one's mentioned yet... prolly my favorite part.

billstevejim, Sunday, 26 August 2012 17:27 (eleven years ago) link

I wish it was louder..

OK I've never actually heard the whole song but ever since Peep Show started up again I've been singing the parts of it that are featured on that programme over and over again. I'm going to go and check out the full version right now

paolo, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

Well that was pretty much what I expected. I imagine it would be a lot of fun to dance drunk to

paolo, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

was gonna say wasn't "Flagpole Sitta" in the trailer for a Rachael Leigh Cook movie but i guess i confused Antitrust with Disturbing Behavior

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

the circle was almost complete

Great song. Fuck you trendy haters

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

trendy haters! i actually am ok with the song, just think a slowed down, super sensitive version is hilarious.

tylerw, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

It really suffers from not having the "I wanna publish zines and rage against machines" couplet.

Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 21:24 (eleven years ago) link

haha i kept waiting for that line to hit

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 21:28 (eleven years ago) link

i know! what a cop out!

tylerw, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

My rage was probably directed at self only Tyler. No offence. I returned to their second(?) album recently thanks to a mention upthread. It sounded decent.

jesus what is this please tell me it's a joke

c sharp major, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 23:18 (eleven years ago) link

this is seriously the first thing i've seen in a long time where i can't really tell whether it's funny on purpose or not

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 23:22 (eleven years ago) link

i also enjoyed the three seconds of "flagpole sitta" featured in the film disturbing behavior (which i saw at the dollar theater becuz i had a crush on katie holmes).

I've never seen the video before, lead singer has a somehow-even-nerdier Craig Finn stage presence.

I remember enjoying this but after that viewing I'm leaning toward VG OTM.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 23 May 2022 07:47 (two years ago) link

Someone's really missing a beat not putting together a Marcy Playground/Harvey Danger/Tracy Bonham tour.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 23 May 2022 07:52 (two years ago) link

This song is annoying. Also, it kicks ass. I unabashedly love it.

Hasn't enough time passed that we can all relax the cringe and just luxuriate in the awesomeness of this song.
If you're bored then you're boring.

this song rips and i want to do it at a packed karaoke night right now

na (NA), Monday, 23 May 2022 15:09 (two years ago) link

I've never seen the video before, lead singer has a somehow-even-nerdier Craig Finn stage presence.

I remember at the time thinking that he reminded me of Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies.

song is a congealed blockage from a deviated septum

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Monday, 23 May 2022 17:17 (two years ago) link

i swear they played it on morning “alternative” radio for 12 months straight

it was borderline abuse

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 23 May 2022 18:09 (two years ago) link

"Run it up the flagpole" is such a 90s ad agency / James Carville phrase (appropriately played with in this song).

deep luminous trombone (Eazy), Monday, 23 May 2022 18:18 (two years ago) link

don't wanna think about that lead singer playing with anything

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Monday, 23 May 2022 19:18 (two years ago) link

song is still played on radio constantly, very much part of the oppressive 'safe list'

dyl, Monday, 23 May 2022 19:32 (two years ago) link

When this song comes up, I think of the review (Charles Aaron in Spin?, who knows) that had a line like – "He claims 'I don't even own a TV,' which means he must have copped those Elvis Costello moves while doing laundry at his parents' house."
