Is any Audion going to place? Love that stuff.

your native bacon (mh), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:03 (thirteen years ago)

Mouth to Mouth, surely.

I really hope One More Time and Miura won't be in the top 5. It'd be so boring.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 24 August 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

One More Time

well it would be interesting to interrogate each and every person who gave that track a #1 vote

slowly

hot slag (lukas), Friday, 24 August 2012 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

why? why would you even post that?

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 24 August 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

just find it bizarre that people are really into that track

i choose violence

hot slag (lukas), Friday, 24 August 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

Wow! What an incredible list! SERIOUSLY.

I really hate Poney though, sorry I just couldn't let that pass.

???

MikoMcha, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

Also, coming back from drinks and dancefloors, but I don't get how anyone could "hate" Poney. I understand that there might be a stigma attached to it, but this track was devastating. That whole EP is total classic.

MikoMcha, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:33 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that ep CHANGED THE GAME

everyone at that point was like ah well, machinic techno music was a nice thought, on to "r&b music on ecstasy" and "basement jaxx style vomit all pop in a sink w/ a drum machine"

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:45 (thirteen years ago)

vitalic took that "techno is history" thing down hardcorrrre

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:45 (thirteen years ago)

the only real criticism is that they're structurally very "my first techno track"

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:49 (thirteen years ago)

intro intro intro intro build build build build climax climax climax breakdown repeat done

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)

poney pt 1 esp egregious

BUT keep in mind at the time people were glazing over with all the smoothly pounding drum loop swedish mafia stuff and were majorly skeptical that techno could, uh, bang or whatever

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)

I remember really appreciating the pure force of the track, even with its predictable structure. On drugs with with a friend, circa 2003 - "there's just so much energy."

MikoMcha, Saturday, 25 August 2012 00:02 (thirteen years ago)

I'm thinking of La Rock btw.

MikoMcha, Saturday, 25 August 2012 00:03 (thirteen years ago)

"r&b music on ecstasy"

this is the best kind of music btw

The Reverend, Saturday, 25 August 2012 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

yeah yeah so says yung lex

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 01:39 (thirteen years ago)

does jam city's "aqua box" count?

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 01:39 (thirteen years ago)

Where's Hyph Mngo going to place? Top 15?

azaera, Saturday, 25 August 2012 01:54 (thirteen years ago)

#1 w/ a bullet

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 01:54 (thirteen years ago)

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 01:56 (thirteen years ago)

That's what's weird about Vitalic, I think I heard La Rock first at a Dave Angel gig!

There was a lot of very obtuse and dark techno around too, it's not just the fault of Basement Jaxx etc.

And there were other people making that Italo inspired catchy techno, loads of them.

Still unsure anything touches the Poney EP as a perfect fusion of brutality and directness. Like, those tracks are so populist, they demand to be danced to.

I saw him play live in a 100 capacity basement back then and it's probably the craziest I've ever seen a venue.

He played for about an hour and at the end you were at the opposite side of the club to where you started, thinking "where are my friends? what just happened?"

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Saturday, 25 August 2012 08:10 (thirteen years ago)

Does anyone remember the Poney EP from 2001 itself? I sort of remembering it working its way into consciousness over the next year or two.

Dance music in general and techno in particular wasn't very fashionable around then but the EP worked its way up as a techno Trojan horse within electroclash really. Like the missing link between Laurent Garnier and big room electrohouse and then frankenhouse as much as anything.

Matt DC, Saturday, 25 August 2012 11:19 (thirteen years ago)

???
Haha I knew I'd get called on that. In fairness I just gave it a listen back and it's quite a bit less irritating than I remember it being, and def less irritating than La Rock. I dunno, TLG said it better than I can with 'the only real criticism is that they're structurally very "my first techno track"', it just feels a bit clumsy and grating.

Invisible Bongo Band (Mr Andy M), Saturday, 25 August 2012 11:43 (thirteen years ago)

Also Matt OTM, to me Poney and esp La Rock sound a lot like the sort of 'frankendance' stuff that people here would usually give short shrift to. Don't want to make too big a deal of this though, or overstate how much I dislike them.

Invisible Bongo Band (Mr Andy M), Saturday, 25 August 2012 11:45 (thirteen years ago)

that's rubbish

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Saturday, 25 August 2012 12:25 (thirteen years ago)

got no time for 'frankendance' if by that you mean the type of thing annie mac might play. but 'la rock 01' was is and always will be an undeniable monster of a tune and nothing like that.

second only to popcorn (or something), Saturday, 25 August 2012 12:45 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I always saw Vitalic as the kind of supreme exception to the rule of 00s French electrohouse shittiness. That said, La Rock > Poney

formerly EDB (ed.b), Saturday, 25 August 2012 14:30 (thirteen years ago)

Frankendance not a thing (if really a thing at all) til after Justice. Vitalic fitted well with Electroclash-tagged shit at the time at least the faster stuff like 'I Dance Alone' plus maybe other either side of the rushier techno stuff ('Diabla', Beyer mix of 'Ignition Key').

nashwan, Saturday, 25 August 2012 14:48 (thirteen years ago)

Uh... I didn't actually say Vitalic was frankendance (Poney wasn't, even later Vitalic isn't really). Poney is a signpost on the way there in the way that a lot of later noisy maximalist electrohouse is, and Justice probably had Vitalic in mind when they were making Waters of Nazareth but really when you look at Vitalic's understanding of dancefloor dynamics there's no comparison.

Matt DC, Saturday, 25 August 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

At this point I'll unapologetically lobby for some electrohouse and love that shit, but I also wish there was more Berghain-style, Downwards label-eqsue stuff that made it to the results.

If that makes me an outlier, so be it.

your native bacon (mh), Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

IMO that stuff will be in the 10s poll

and also tbf which norman nodge track would you pick? NN8.0, NN7.4 or NRE?

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:11 (thirteen years ago)

i will actually be surprised if function's variance edit doesn't place

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

Very true, I have to honestly say I've done most of my listening in the last couple years even if a lot of the material came out in the 00s it wasn't widely listened to.

your native bacon (mh), Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

i know i would pick native rhythm electric

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

berghain 02 was 2010

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

oh shit no, my bad, it was 08!

still, this doesn't exactly sound like "the 00s" in my head the way electroclash does, it sounds contemporary, not dated like vitalic, which is maybe why it doesn't belong anyway

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

I also keep forgetting that Downwards comp was... 93-97.

;_;

your native bacon (mh), Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

lol @ the youtube comments, mr. subtle

your native bacon (mh), Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

OK, what the hell mix is that NN one on that I have listened to a lot lately?

your native bacon (mh), Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

berghain 02

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

i've used it on one of mine but i'm assuming it's not that one

adam marshall for LWE? silent servant for mnml ssgs?

the late great, Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:22 (thirteen years ago)

ohh, berghain 02 is the mix, too, I was only seeing the vinyl single on discogs. yeah, I have been listening to that dettman mix

your native bacon (mh), Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

also a lot of mnml ssgs mixes! lots of good ones.

your native bacon (mh), Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

if you can play two copies of native rhythm electric at once it is a treat (even in youtube)

25. Tensnake - Coma Cat (317 points, 14 votes)
Year: 2009
Youtube: http://youtu.be/uZSO6qQqpqc

Tensnake is extremely hooky. Everytime I hear somebody mention M-Cat I get the Coma Cat vocal replaying in my head
― I am using your worlds, Sunday, April 25, 2010

kind of amazing how many times i've heard "coma cat" played out this year, and i really don't even go out that much. is this just random coincidence or are sf disco nights actually indicative of this song sorta blowing up ???
― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Monday, April 26, 2010

this track has basically the most perfect hook ever.
― skip, Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Coma Cat just feels like one of those timelessly perfect house records, like Chime/Voodoo Ray level perfect. It sends dancefloors into states of ridiculous grinning euphoria.

Gonna take the opportunity that you guys are rather active over here to post the remaining 5 before the top 20.

Moka, Saturday, 25 August 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

Didn't vote for Coma Cat but I'm glad it made the list (wasn't really in doubt I guess).
