i never really got "wut", i mean i like it but i don't really even hear it as dance music, its more like drive around feeling cool and cinematic music. also the video for "poney" is amazing but the song doesn't belong anywhere near this high up in the list.

Royksopp/Trentemoller - mehSnooze 4 Love - Terje has done better than this but an undeniable jamFace to Face - interesting and apt inclusion. It's a bit repetitive but the hook/chorus section is pretty much perfect. I love that small moment of space that occasionally pops up in the second repetition. Even the verse is effective - maybe Daft Punk's best-structured pop track.Flowers - on one hand sounds kind of dated and like a gussied up boring R&B track, on the other hand I could see myself getting really into this after 4 or 5 listens and internalizing the production.Discopolis - fantastic production but seems to be missing something.Saturn Strobe - take THAT, Love Cry (though I still like Love Cry better). Saw him live, one of my favorite shows of the last few years.Wut - I listened to this a lot last year - the cheap/flimsy comments have some merit.Digital Love - this probably would have been my #2 overall. Still sounds fresh despite having heard it hundreds of times and that little orgasmatron segment near the end still rocks.Body Language - fun track, can't think of anything to say about itReckless - this is maximalism I can get behind, great chorus, good vocals, still space between the different elementsPoney - after having a musical falling out with these guys, rediscovered them a few months ago and remembered why I liked them in the first place. Propulsive groove, good use of pacing to make it easier to listen to.

I have never actually heard 'Bring Me Closer' outside the confines of Mayer's Fabric mix and the bit near the end when the strings and the beats build is amazing.
― Matt DC, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)
Surprised to see no Cobblestone Jazz or even Mathew Johnson yet.

ronan you must be joking

I should've said - it's not my canon
Marionette will probably place, although I've been through the list and there's only about 15 tracks that are no-brainers to make the list.

you askin?
― the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)
the thing about johnson tracks is the extra 5-10 minutes of padding. no dude, you're not remaking mouth to mouth. there is only one audion track like that. you need to get over it and edit your acid jams down to 3-4 minutes, then we won;t poop on yr albums.
― the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)
jonson even
i keep watching this over and over again but i can't tell if it's the official video for u askin - http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=cnPowEsUrn0

Is any Audion going to place? Love that stuff.
― your native bacon (mh), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:03 (thirteen years ago)
Mouth to Mouth, surely.
I really hope One More Time and Miura won't be in the top 5. It'd be so boring.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 24 August 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)
One More Time
well it would be interesting to interrogate each and every person who gave that track a #1 vote

― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 24 August 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)
just find it bizarre that people are really into that track
i choose violence
― hot slag (lukas), Friday, 24 August 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)
Wow! What an incredible list! SERIOUSLY.
I really hate Poney though, sorry I just couldn't let that pass.
???
― MikoMcha, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)
Also, coming back from drinks and dancefloors, but I don't get how anyone could "hate" Poney. I understand that there might be a stigma attached to it, but this track was devastating. That whole EP is total classic.
― MikoMcha, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:33 (thirteen years ago)
yeah that ep CHANGED THE GAME
everyone at that point was like ah well, machinic techno music was a nice thought, on to "r&b music on ecstasy" and "basement jaxx style vomit all pop in a sink w/ a drum machine"
― the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:45 (thirteen years ago)
vitalic took that "techno is history" thing down hardcorrrre
the only real criticism is that they're structurally very "my first techno track"
― the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:49 (thirteen years ago)
intro intro intro intro build build build build climax climax climax breakdown repeat done
― the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)
poney pt 1 esp egregious
BUT keep in mind at the time people were glazing over with all the smoothly pounding drum loop swedish mafia stuff and were majorly skeptical that techno could, uh, bang or whatever
― the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)
I remember really appreciating the pure force of the track, even with its predictable structure. On drugs with with a friend, circa 2003 - "there's just so much energy."
― MikoMcha, Saturday, 25 August 2012 00:02 (thirteen years ago)
I'm thinking of La Rock btw.
― MikoMcha, Saturday, 25 August 2012 00:03 (thirteen years ago)
"r&b music on ecstasy"
this is the best kind of music btw

That's what's weird about Vitalic, I think I heard La Rock first at a Dave Angel gig!
There was a lot of very obtuse and dark techno around too, it's not just the fault of Basement Jaxx etc.
And there were other people making that Italo inspired catchy techno, loads of them.
Still unsure anything touches the Poney EP as a perfect fusion of brutality and directness. Like, those tracks are so populist, they demand to be danced to.
I saw him play live in a 100 capacity basement back then and it's probably the craziest I've ever seen a venue.
He played for about an hour and at the end you were at the opposite side of the club to where you started, thinking "where are my friends? what just happened?"
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Saturday, 25 August 2012 08:10 (thirteen years ago)
Does anyone remember the Poney EP from 2001 itself? I sort of remembering it working its way into consciousness over the next year or two.
Dance music in general and techno in particular wasn't very fashionable around then but the EP worked its way up as a techno Trojan horse within electroclash really. Like the missing link between Laurent Garnier and big room electrohouse and then frankenhouse as much as anything.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 25 August 2012 11:19 (thirteen years ago)
???Haha I knew I'd get called on that. In fairness I just gave it a listen back and it's quite a bit less irritating than I remember it being, and def less irritating than La Rock. I dunno, TLG said it better than I can with 'the only real criticism is that they're structurally very "my first techno track"', it just feels a bit clumsy and grating.
― Invisible Bongo Band (Mr Andy M), Saturday, 25 August 2012 11:43 (thirteen years ago)
Also Matt OTM, to me Poney and esp La Rock sound a lot like the sort of 'frankendance' stuff that people here would usually give short shrift to. Don't want to make too big a deal of this though, or overstate how much I dislike them.
― Invisible Bongo Band (Mr Andy M), Saturday, 25 August 2012 11:45 (thirteen years ago)
that's rubbish
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Saturday, 25 August 2012 12:25 (thirteen years ago)
got no time for 'frankendance' if by that you mean the type of thing annie mac might play. but 'la rock 01' was is and always will be an undeniable monster of a tune and nothing like that.
― second only to popcorn (or something), Saturday, 25 August 2012 12:45 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I always saw Vitalic as the kind of supreme exception to the rule of 00s French electrohouse shittiness. That said, La Rock > Poney
― formerly EDB (ed.b), Saturday, 25 August 2012 14:30 (thirteen years ago)
Frankendance not a thing (if really a thing at all) til after Justice. Vitalic fitted well with Electroclash-tagged shit at the time at least the faster stuff like 'I Dance Alone' plus maybe other either side of the rushier techno stuff ('Diabla', Beyer mix of 'Ignition Key').
