detune two oscillators...than what (electricsound), Friday, 24 August 2012 05:37 (thirteen years ago)

I'm leaving the countdown for tonight. Have to sleep. Top 25 until next week!

Moka, Friday, 24 August 2012 05:38 (thirteen years ago)

I feel like Vitalic vote would be split between that and La Rock.

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Friday, 24 August 2012 05:39 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks Moka! Looking forward to the rest.

Here's the Poney Pt. 1 video (aka birds) on vimeo. If there's one video in this thread that deserves to be watched in high quality, this is it:

Re: Saturn Strobe

Also, that bit around 5:19 when that hissing noise pans right across = like seeing the bright white lights bathing the dancefloor at 5am for a few seconds to allow everyone to put their hands in the air. It's beautiful.
― Matt DC, Thursday, February 28, 2008

That moment has brought a tear to my eye on more than one occasion. To me, it really embodies the spirit of raving in the 90s. Feeling connected to everyone and everything around you. Of course it's cheesy, but who cares.

azaera, Friday, 24 August 2012 06:08 (thirteen years ago)

both the ass and the tune are absolutely amazing. imagine hearing this while planting your face in that.. pure bliss!

holy smokes, that's a thing. more O_O than XD, but yeah. the color balloons, red drop, brickfingers, yes.

track's way, way better, too. that gonna show up later on?

contenderizer, Friday, 24 August 2012 07:04 (thirteen years ago)

nah, I don't think the track will show up. it's less celebrated than the two moodymann tracks above. (correct me if I'm wrong)

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 24 August 2012 07:12 (thirteen years ago)

sconies?

contenderizer, Friday, 24 August 2012 07:13 (thirteen years ago)

young dem sconies is from 1997, right?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 24 August 2012 07:18 (thirteen years ago)

oh :(

this is why i didn't vote

contenderizer, Friday, 24 August 2012 07:22 (thirteen years ago)

'Wut' is a decent enough hip-hop instrumental but come on it does not belong in this company, sounds kinda flimsy and cheap in comparison to a lot of the rest of this list.

Matt DC, Friday, 24 August 2012 07:23 (thirteen years ago)

wut??

(can't help it)

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 24 August 2012 07:26 (thirteen years ago)

That Trentemoller remix of Royksopp really felt like the last hurrah of really bombastic big-room electrohouse as a credible thing. The build in the middle of that track is so preposterously over the top you can almost feel the rest of Europe going "maybe time to pack it in and do something else after this?" It's amazing by the way.

Body Language felt huge and kinda omnipresent at the time, without the particular big-shiny-bubble sound of the main hook I'm not sure it would have anywhere near the same appeal for me, but at the time it was just exciting to see a Get Physical track get so huge. A couple of years on I saw Booka Shade play it at a festival in Portugal and the crowd sang along like it was Seven Nation Army at a football stadium.

2005 was a.) a really good year or b.) the year ilxors were tearing up the club scene

05-07 was probably peak clubbing time for me. If anything I had a bias towards slightly earlier tracks in this poll though.

Matt DC, Friday, 24 August 2012 07:33 (thirteen years ago)

Still love Discopolis as well - amazed it wasn't a proper chart hit with a video that pervy.

Matt DC, Friday, 24 August 2012 07:36 (thirteen years ago)

I had to watch a 3+gb file of the Discopolis video over and over for work once

35 sweet female attitude flowers (sunship mix)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't even realise this was this decade, but anyways, ::cartwheels::

my god it's full of straw (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Friday, 24 August 2012 07:57 (thirteen years ago)

this is a good example of crowd sourcing a canon! nice work hive mind!

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 08:52 (thirteen years ago)

it's not a canon I like but it sums up the gestalt of ilx pretty well

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 08:54 (thirteen years ago)

and only about 1/3 of the songs are bad so by ilx standards great result for a dance poll

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 08:55 (thirteen years ago)

lose the internet hardman thing, it's unconvincing.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 24 August 2012 09:31 (thirteen years ago)

Another great run of tunes. I had Flowers rmx at #47 and Psychotic Photosynthesis at #40. PP is another one that I would place a lot higher were we to do the poll again though, it's become a really important tune for me so I'm happy that it's ended up with a decent place. Nice to see something involving Trentemoller show up as well, I had Polar Shift on my list but suspect it won't make it now.

Invisible Bongo Band (Mr Andy M), Friday, 24 August 2012 10:07 (thirteen years ago)

I really hate Poney though, sorry I just couldn't let that pass.

Invisible Bongo Band (Mr Andy M), Friday, 24 August 2012 10:08 (thirteen years ago)

Pretty sure Vahid embarked upon this poll expecting to dislike at least half of it so I read that post as him being relatively even-handed and complementary.

This feels like a very ILM canon but equally one that's very recognisable to someone who went dancing a lot in the mid-00s despite its blindspots (Berghain techno, mersh house, most of the first couple of years of the decade)

Matt DC, Friday, 24 August 2012 10:20 (thirteen years ago)

'Wut' is a decent enough hip-hop instrumental but come on it does not belong in this company, sounds kinda flimsy and cheap in comparison to a lot of the rest of this list.

i never really got "wut", i mean i like it but i don't really even hear it as dance music, its more like drive around feeling cool and cinematic music. also the video for "poney" is amazing but the song doesn't belong anywhere near this high up in the list.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 24 August 2012 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

Royksopp/Trentemoller - meh
Snooze 4 Love - Terje has done better than this but an undeniable jam
Face to Face - interesting and apt inclusion. It's a bit repetitive but the hook/chorus section is pretty much perfect. I love that small moment of space that occasionally pops up in the second repetition. Even the verse is effective - maybe Daft Punk's best-structured pop track.
Flowers - on one hand sounds kind of dated and like a gussied up boring R&B track, on the other hand I could see myself getting really into this after 4 or 5 listens and internalizing the production.
Discopolis - fantastic production but seems to be missing something.
Saturn Strobe - take THAT, Love Cry (though I still like Love Cry better). Saw him live, one of my favorite shows of the last few years.
Wut - I listened to this a lot last year - the cheap/flimsy comments have some merit.
Digital Love - this probably would have been my #2 overall. Still sounds fresh despite having heard it hundreds of times and that little orgasmatron segment near the end still rocks.
Body Language - fun track, can't think of anything to say about it
Reckless - this is maximalism I can get behind, great chorus, good vocals, still space between the different elements
Poney - after having a musical falling out with these guys, rediscovered them a few months ago and remembered why I liked them in the first place. Propulsive groove, good use of pacing to make it easier to listen to.

LOL at that Smith n Hack Herbert remix. That's awesome.

i have been catching up with this list all day and it has been so joyous

v for viennetta (c sharp major), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

I have never actually heard 'Bring Me Closer' outside the confines of Mayer's Fabric mix and the bit near the end when the strings and the beats build is amazing.

Matt DC, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

Surprised to see no Cobblestone Jazz or even Mathew Johnson yet.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

ronan you must be joking

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

I should've said - it's not my canon

the late great, Friday, 24 August 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

Surprised to see no Cobblestone Jazz or even Mathew Johnson yet.

Marionette will probably place, although I've been through the list and there's only about 15 tracks that are no-brainers to make the list.
