here's Howard Skempton's utterly sublime "Lento" which Pantha used as the basis for "Saturn Strobe". it was good of him to give Skempton the entire writing credit for the track but a little shameful of him to mis-credit the track to "Robert Skempton" on the sleeve! i sent this to a friend of mine a while back and he messaged me tonight to say that it had just brought him to the verge of tears.

I don't know *why* it works so well, possibly because the all the minimal house elements have been quietly slipped under the strings rather than one element grafted on top of the other, or because they seem to move together so well.
Also, that bit around 5:19 when that hissing noise pans right across = like seeing the bright white lights bathing the dancefloor at 5am for a few seconds to allow everyone to put their hands in the air. It's beautiful.

It ripped up almost everything bangalter/daft punk/french house had ever done with just one song. In this sense the "they're joking around" thing may have some truth, ie they're setting out to rip whatever they've done before to pieces. But I don't think it alienated any fans either, despite the odd defected type.

haha i just checked on discogs, and that and 'moving like a train' are the sum total of the smith-n-hack remix work. you could just throw in soundhack/stream i guess. i wish they'd do a bit more but then they don't really release bad records either. (well, the errorsmith LP is a pretty punishing listen.)

'Wut' is a decent enough hip-hop instrumental but come on it does not belong in this company, sounds kinda flimsy and cheap in comparison to a lot of the rest of this list.

That Trentemoller remix of Royksopp really felt like the last hurrah of really bombastic big-room electrohouse as a credible thing. The build in the middle of that track is so preposterously over the top you can almost feel the rest of Europe going "maybe time to pack it in and do something else after this?" It's amazing by the way.

Body Language felt huge and kinda omnipresent at the time, without the particular big-shiny-bubble sound of the main hook I'm not sure it would have anywhere near the same appeal for me, but at the time it was just exciting to see a Get Physical track get so huge. A couple of years on I saw Booka Shade play it at a festival in Portugal and the crowd sang along like it was Seven Nation Army at a football stadium.

05-07 was probably peak clubbing time for me. If anything I had a bias towards slightly earlier tracks in this poll though.
