yeah the goofy little Avril grunt in "Want U Back" cracks me up, should turn me against the song but totally doesn't. i actually decided to count how many there are in the song and came up with 18, at the end of every 4th bar except during the bridge.

i think "Payphone" has a little kernel of a good song tucked away in all the bad ideas.

audition clip is like seeing an irl andy kaufman foreign guy/elvis routine. such a self-conscious little fidget and then boom! for real as if there's a switch that literally turns her swag on.

although she and her original material are obviously better, let's be real Cher Lloyd's path to fame is at most half a rung up from Karmin's

At work yesterday, where the interminable speaker system has both Want U Back and Brokenhearted on frequent rotation, I was trying to make a case to my coworkers in favor of the former and anti the latter (my coworkers: "they both suck"). Turns out "but i think Cher's UGHs and BOO HOO HOOs are cute and Karmin's CHEERIOs are annoying" isn't very convincing.

One of my coworkers had his last day this week and claimed that Cher Lloyd's grunts are high among the things he will miss the least about the job.

They're obviously both stagey and annoying, but I guess I give Karmin a pass for the "I'm just trying to entertain" lightness of it all. Cher Lloyd grunts in a way more overbearing, post-Katy Perry "ARG, GIVE ME YOUR ATTENTION" sort of way that just feels desperate

yeah "Domino" was a hit, i'm sure some stations still play it, it just seems like in a larger sense nobody in the US has a vested interest in her or cares if she has a follow-up hit (and virtually every UK act has some kind of fervent, visible anglophile following here)

i've always wondered who actually likes jessie j: i know a wide variety of pop fans who'll rep for anything across the spectrum but not one feels remotely kindly towards her. i can't think of any other nominally pop artist as despised by self-declared pop fans.

"Price Tag" feels like a real casual radio fan tune to me, a contemporary equivalent of Meredith Brooks' "Bitch" perhaps.
