41. Justus Kohncke - Timecode (259 points, 9 votes)
Year: 2004
Youtube: http://youtu.be/H0d_NdN1zoc

Normally, I hate justus kohncke but 'timecode' almost makes up for his inherent shittiness.
― :| (....), Saturday, January 15, 2005

Alright Mr. Gill- no joke- I've actually got the 'Timecode' 12" waiting for me right now in the mailroom at my work. Just arrived from Forced Exposure with some other stuff.
*I need to know*
Is there some magic dust on all of the 'Timecode' 12"s that makes you break down into some Otto's Irresistible Dance (oh shit! check that Old School reference!) type groove and fall madly in love with Justus or something?
― jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, August 5, 2005

this year for midnight i have done a massive clock sound collage and then at the stroke of midnight justus kohncke is going to take to the stage to perform 'timecode'.

Year: 2012
Youtube: http://youtu.be/gHiqPG0526U

the first seconds of inspector norse always bring a smile to my face. can't remember the last time a song did that to me
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, January 27, 2012

is the joke about inspector norse that there is a british tv show called inspector morse and so it's funny to name a song inspector norse because todd terje is from norway
― (dayo), Sunday, February 5, 2012

This clip from the short film Whateverest follows Inspector Norse, the real life internet alias of Marius Solem Johanson, who has a penchant for dancing and drugs.

Wait... is Easy Lee a play on Isolée or viceversa? Just looking at these two so close together I finally made the connection, don't know if it's accidental.

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Thursday, 23 August 2012 04:56 (thirteen years ago)

Trying to think of other Carl Craig remixes might place.

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Thursday, 23 August 2012 04:57 (thirteen years ago)

There were only 5 Carl Craig remixes (and one of his songs) in the noms and 3 have made it so far (Theo Parrish, Faze Action and Junior Boys).

Moka, Thursday, 23 August 2012 05:01 (thirteen years ago)

Oh wait there's also two under the C2 moniker so that's actually 7 remixes.

I always thought it was:
Easy Lee....Time to run....Killathon
(I assume a 'killathon' is a charity mass murder event)
― Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, June 9, 2005

i remember being at a party (that i think philip sherburne was dj'ing the side room) and someone played easy lee, and my friend was pumping his fist singing along "eaasy leee, kill the poor, kill the poor, kill the poor, kill the poor, time to run in the streets." but i think those are not the correct lyrics.

THESE GUYS

the late great, Thursday, 23 August 2012 06:08 (thirteen years ago)

Definitely prefer orig of falling up to CCs remix

suare, Thursday, 23 August 2012 06:41 (thirteen years ago)

i felt the same way and probably do overall but the bass dynamics on the CC remix on a big-ass system is just ... sheesh

it's so fucking loud and deep you basically can't hear it on a home stereo, it just feels like he's rotating the dancefloor through the bass dimension

the late great, Thursday, 23 August 2012 06:42 (thirteen years ago)

Definitely more into the original mix too, but I did like the remix at the time - massively overplayed though.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 23 August 2012 07:31 (thirteen years ago)

Big rush of stuff here I'd have expected to be higher, especially Sky Was Pink which I thought would be top 10.

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 August 2012 07:54 (thirteen years ago)

I still hear Timecode played out a fair bit, feels like its really lasted in a way that not much else from that era has. That hook!

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 August 2012 07:56 (thirteen years ago)

that's how i've felt about EVERYTHING that's placed on this poll, yet it seems like we've barely touched the dope track surface?

LA ROCK 01 might be contender for top 10

the late great, Thursday, 23 August 2012 08:27 (thirteen years ago)

Given that Inflation, It's What You Do and Inspector Norse have placed here, I suppose there might be a fair few entries that placed in recent ILM annual polls.

Psychotic Photosynthesis had better place now that Here's Your Trance Now Dance! is in.

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 August 2012 08:48 (thirteen years ago)

oh that'll be up there i'm sure

the late great, Thursday, 23 August 2012 08:49 (thirteen years ago)

yes! 'in the trees' broke top 40, ended up my favourite out of several c2 mixes, only other one i voted for was 'gary'. love 'timecode' but always preferred 'elan' voted both.

second only to popcorn (or something), Thursday, 23 August 2012 08:52 (thirteen years ago)

how you not vote for relevee

the late great, Thursday, 23 August 2012 09:58 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't really been able to keep up with this poll due to being in the wrong time zone, but I am really enjoying the playlist. So many "Oh! Is THAT what that track is?" moments of putting a name to something I have heard out without knowing.

(Right now it's Zed Bias - Neighbourhood)

my god it's full of straw (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Thursday, 23 August 2012 11:00 (thirteen years ago)

I remember being really surprised to find out he looks like an old lady from a UK soap.

Time for a new 'show me men who look like..' thread? ;)

Invisible Bongo Band (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 23 August 2012 11:54 (thirteen years ago)

Just catching up on this last run. Had Falling Up rmx as my #19 but a mid-table sort of placing feels appropriate for it. If we were to re-run the ballot I would def throw a vote to Timecode though, it's one of those tunes that I came to late, initially thought 'eh that's alright' but subsequently have found growing and growing on me.
Had forgotten how much of a facemelter the In The Trees rmx is, nice.

Invisible Bongo Band (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 23 August 2012 11:57 (thirteen years ago)

Fairly substantial bias in favour of microhouse and post-microhouse (horrible fucking term but most of this isn't minimal per se). And Carl Craig. 03-04 electrohouse heavy hitters, deep house and minimal feel kind of under-represented so far.

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:01 (thirteen years ago)

how you not vote for relevee

― the late great, Thursday, 23 August 2012 10:58 (2 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

it ws a tough decision man and i could have stuffed my ballot full of c2 remixes but in the end i had to go with the two i'd bounced around the floor/my flat to the most.

second only to popcorn (or something), Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:08 (thirteen years ago)

electrohouse and minimal no thank you

the late great, Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:14 (thirteen years ago)

happy to see a certain couple of tiefschwarz remixes show tho.

second only to popcorn (or something), Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:15 (thirteen years ago)

still think the "falling up" remix is boring.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:19 (thirteen years ago)

still think ... ah fuck it

the late great, Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:20 (thirteen years ago)

"Solitary Flight" is where my Theo votes would've gone, for sure.

Eric H., Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:27 (thirteen years ago)

still think the "falling up" remix is ridiculously exciting.

jed_, Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:29 (thirteen years ago)

still think about you all the time

suare, Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

Can't believe I loved her.

Eric H., Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

thanks, suare.

jed_, Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:31 (thirteen years ago)

all these lists are fucking wearying

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:34 (thirteen years ago)

The c2 remix I never got was In the Trees, though in general I've always found them a bit on the overrated side. I believe I voted for revelee, though, cause I mean, why wouldn't you!

formerly EDB (ed.b), Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:39 (thirteen years ago)

wait, i'm listening to the video and it's not what i thought was the original. i've been listening to (Hercules Club Mix). in the dfa i claimed the original was 10 times better than the frankie knuckles version, i guess i'm claiming this one is.

― jaxon, Friday, January 25, 2008 6:19 PM (4 years ago)

but "blind" when played in a club (and preferably the "club mix") just sounds like it has come from outer space. the vocal makes me feel how i imagine it would be to be on opium. so warm inside!

the knuckles mix to me sounds like BAD funky / handbag house. hated that sound then, hate it now. mr. knuckles can do so much better.

― stirmonster, Tuesday, February 12, 2008 9:38 PM (4 years ago)

now liveblog 3: the frankie knuckles mix

― Ronan, Tuesday, February 12, 2008 10:00 PM (4 years ago)

after 10 seconds of this I've decided a cup of tea would be more pleasing.

― Ronan, Tuesday, February 12, 2008 10:00 PM (4 years ago)

(I'm just bitter because I voted for the Club mix / love both Knuckles and H&LA but can't stand that remix)

etc, Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:45 (thirteen years ago)

Falling Up remix might be the single track i heard played out most over the last decade, it seems like absolutely everyone played it. it's alright, not a particular personal favourite. wish i'd heard Relevee remix played nearly as often, but that one's more of a showstopper I guess.

jabba hands, Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:47 (thirteen years ago)

I quite like the 'falling up' remix but prefer 'relevee' and 'in the trees' and probably 'like a child' too (which i didn't vote for). that big synth riff on 'in the trees', so classic.

your own personal cheeses (haitch), Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:48 (thirteen years ago)

The Sky Was Pink remix is much better and more exciting than I remember it being.

Invisible Bongo Band (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:55 (thirteen years ago)

I hated the Knuckles remix of "Blind" at first but eventually came to love it. Don't remember which version I voted for, though.

squicky chutzpah in the drug biz (jaymc), Thursday, 23 August 2012 12:58 (thirteen years ago)

I never get the appeal of the frankie knuckles remix, too. It's OK but could've been made by a random soundcloud guy.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:03 (thirteen years ago)

the original mix of 'blind' was my fave. had a certain swagger to it.

i always liked that 'icelandic version' of 'the sky was pink' the best - more of a swirly laptop shoegazer thing though really.

your own personal cheeses (haitch), Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:04 (thirteen years ago)

OG Blind > > Club mix > > > > > > > > Knuckles mix

Fairly substantial bias in favour of microhouse and post-microhouse

this bias came from who got involved in the noms thread, rather than reflecting sifted-down taste overall I think

ʘ (sic), Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:30 (thirteen years ago)

Club Mix is the best b/c it's the one that sounds most like Adamski's "Killer".

Tim F, Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

One of my favourite moments in self-googling was stumbling across a feminist blog takedown of a year-end write-up of "Blind" I'd done on the basis that I repressed its queer content.

Tim F, Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

The club mix is the best version of Blind because it removes a lot of the superfluous ingredients - his voice, especially the "to see you now" bit, works so much more powerfully with more space around it. It's like he's singing to an empty club.

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

As far as I can remember there's not much going on in the club mix either than beats, bass and vocals whereas the original is kind of cluttered and messy.

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

YES to both the last two posts.
