What I love about them as original producers - the sense that on every single occasion they're consciously trying to make the most enjoyable record imaginable. And their ability to mix pop-disco and e-transcendence and that sense of wide-eyed wonder without ever really coming over as twee or cloying or annoying. Whispers is my favourite single of this year by several light years.― Matt DC, Thursday, December 11, 2008

haha that's cause these song suck >:-(
:DDD
i had 'beautiful life' in my top ten as well (at #9) but i dont have much to say about it its borderline corny i think but 'undeniable' i guess i like it most for its flaws, the way it sounds like the extended car commercials they play before movies now, they way it makes itself up out of its own exhilaration, its sortof ruthless
i had the prins thomas remix of 'white diamond' as my #8 which has the uncanny knack of making the cosmic out of the everyday
― Lamp, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:30 (thirteen years ago)
I feel like that bad album and the split of The Magician has really killed that brief wave of Aeroplane joy, but "Whispers" is still awesome.
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:32 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, Beautiful Life is corny. I thought that was the intention?
― Moka, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:32 (thirteen years ago)
"Beautiful Life" is total hands-in-the-air transcendent cheese but boy does it earn it.
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:33 (thirteen years ago)
The random moments of brilliance in Aeroplane's career are amongst the best things in any genre any decade. There's not that many producers with the same level of manic detail that they have.
― Moka, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:34 (thirteen years ago)
"Dancing in the moonlight" bit slays.
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:39 (thirteen years ago)
And seeing them at the height of their powers is one of the best nights I've ever had.

had no idea Fred Falke posted here.
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:45 (thirteen years ago)
I think that was the only post he made?

I guess so but glad the dude googles his tunes.
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)
So much hotness, when the guitar lead fades in as the synth sweep peaks.. oh man. Then the beat's back.

what I love about 'Deck The House' is that I think he started off with an expert house chord sequence, then oriented the samples on top to compliment & harmonize with it to take it in more of a dissonant / Public Enemy direction, then subtracted the chord pads. The bass line points at the chords, the dozens of brief tonal stabs hint at the harmony & drive everything forward -- you can feel where the music should be, but the absence is disorienting, the only thing you can count on is the rhythm

It just needs some samples going "I CHALLENGE THEE" "TO" "A DANCING""CONTEST!""I'M GONNA EAT YOUR""UMBRELLA"Oh hahahahah, now hit me with a hilarious kung fu sample.― Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, December 10, 2002 10:33 AM (9 years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
How did I type "thee" there, that is so weird, I swore I'd written "you".― Ronan (Ronan)
― Moka, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:49 (thirteen years ago)
I don't think I know the original mix but that guitar lick in DJ Koze's mix of "minimal" is so funked up yet supple and mirage-like
― windjamm voyager (blank), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 03:50 (thirteen years ago)
Oh damn "deck the house" rocks. Just so fun. Akufen live was one of the funnest, sweatiest shows I've been to.

I love when akufen throws down those bluesy/honkytonk harmonica "micro"samples on his deck the house type stuff. Just adds this awesome bit of swing and character.

Is superb post-Mille Plateaux type stuff by akufen. highly recommended. Not at all like Deck the house.

55, not 56. I've been really screwing up the numbers today.
― Moka, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 04:00 (thirteen years ago)
And I just realized that the 'emerge' version I have had on my ipod all this years isn't the actual single. Apparently I was only acquainted with the DFA remix after all.

I saw Akufen walk in to talk to people around the end of mutek this year! Fond memories of a dj set I saw him do at night, outside, near a lake years ago.
― your native bacon (mh), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 04:03 (thirteen years ago)
I love the original Emerge. Super sparse and perfect. Haven't listened to the album in forever but remember it being really good.
― windjamm voyager (blank), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 04:04 (thirteen years ago)
I liked the second album, too. Judge me.
― your native bacon (mh), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 04:07 (thirteen years ago)
second album was better than the first, even if it had no 'emerge' holding it up

I regret not voting but am happy to see so much stuff I would've voted for making the cut. I'm a little sad that "Transition" didn't make it higher; that's a really "big" song for me.
― windjamm voyager (blank), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 04:11 (thirteen years ago)
xp, dang I need to check the second one out I guess. Don't remember hearing much about it, at the time.

I want the rubicon DVD so bad. Not for the video really, just to have Rubicon ON DVD
― windjamm voyager (blank), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 04:14 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i really feel like transition should be much higher. I don't remember seeing it in the submissions (i thought it was like 98 or something or i would have voted for it top 10) does anyone know if it was added later in the post voting period, or i just missed it?

I think I like Bitches Brew more than 'Fizheuer Zieheuer', it also has some horns on it.― Omar (Omar), Thursday, November 23, 2006
so, the promos of 'fizheuer zieheuer' have dropped and it's totally insane - i can't stop laughing whilst listening to it. it definitely lives up to the hype. a parping, dubbed out, industrial klanking balkan freak out. i've no idea how long it is but i felt it could have gone on a wee bit longer. :)― stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, October 6, 2006
Fizheuer's context is firmly early hours; that's when Villalobos generally DJs (even in London he never starts before 5); the concept of dancefloor friendliness changes the later the hour, but at the same time it's not like you could ever rock a party with Duso.― a (rslvd), Tuesday, November 21, 2006

Brutalga Square I could never get that into. Koze Comes Around got a lot of love but I wasn't able to warm up to it so much.

Antena's "Camina Del Sol (Joakim Mix)" is just too big for words - it's like, trance revivalism meets Ame meets Carl Craig meets, I dunno, just skyscraping largesse. It's almost too big: the whole thing feels incredibly deliberate. But it would be pretty astonishing on the dancefloor.― Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, October 1, 2006
― Moka, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 04:54 (thirteen years ago)
Was the #1 vote you Tim?
I went to Las Vegas once and I swear one of the best moments I had there was hearing 'camino del sol' on a club. I don't know if that makes my Vegas trip lame or awesome.
― Moka, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 04:55 (thirteen years ago)
That said I prefer the original one since I knew it first and I have more memories attached to it but the Joakim mix is huge.
