Tired of lumping everyone into the 'Gay Rapper' thread, and if Le1f is big enough for his own dedicated thread, Mykki is also, especially once her proper mixtape drops in October.
'Wavvy' is the first official single from her rap mixtape - 'Join My Militia' and 'Head is a Stone' were both off of the industrial/punk/poetry EP she put out called 'Mykki Blanco & the Mutant Angels'.
It's produced by Brenmar, it bangs, she goes hard and the video came out today:

when's the gatekeeper collaboration coming out?
― ogmor, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 18:15 (eleven years ago) link
The Gatekeeper collab is supposed to be on 'Cosmic Angel' along with a track from Teengirl Fantasy, a couple from Nguzunguzu, Physical Therapy, Sinden, 5kinandbone5, and some other folks.

So, October, I guess? Unless it gets released earlier as a single.
video is gorgeous, if this is indicative of the shift in tone from EP to mixtape then i'm keen. gatekeeper collaboration seems like the sort of maximalist risk that will probably fall flat but has an outside chance of unstoppable greatness

Haze.Boogie.Life video. Love it. Love the spareness of the beat, v. Beez in the Trap. Live for some reason I thought there was a lot more BASS to this, but after the initial shock of how thin the production feels, it's pretty great.

Really like this until all the high-pitched voice tracks at the end.

Is it just me or do those sound like s/he's trying to do Ryan Trecartin? I get the impression one of them ("MB's First Freestyle") is the original Youtube clip that started the project; I really like "Mendecino California" but maybe it dates from the same period.

it's not bad, but not that impressive either.
― UnderControl, Tuesday, 13 November 2012 02:27 (eleven years ago) link
And sorry, I'm not trying to be transphobic or, you know, a dick with the "s/he" nomenclature, just not sure if I should use the pronoun for Mykki Blanco or for Michael Quattlebaum for something dating from that point in Mykki-Blanco-as-art-project.
― muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 13 November 2012 02:27 (eleven years ago) link
Female pronouns for Blanco, male pronouns for Quattlebaum seems p obvious to me.

srsly. the mixtape is slightly less consistent then i'd like but the first 9 tracks are mostly GREAT and the singles choices/videos have been flawless.
The end of that tape is so bizarre but kind of inspired.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 26 January 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago) link
it is, but it doesn't feel of a piece
and i really wish we'd gotten a properly mixed/mastered version of betty rubble (i got the midas touch) because live it fits in REALLY well with the first 8 songs or whatever and on the record it feels like a demo.

Well said, I think. (Just now from Mykki on FB)
Traveling the way I do I've realized there are so many ways of living and being that everything and anything seems possible now, up for the choosing. Opportunity is a luxury I know, perspective is even a luxury. I never realized their could be so many different ways a person could seek happiness, but this very same life altering shift has also made me also realize that for many this kind of openness, this kind of creative idealism is non existent and culturally irrelevant. I see workers and merchants and immigrants and street children whose reality of a certain kind of opportunity of living remains nonexistent and I wonder if in their lives they will be granted a reprieve from having to work hand to mouth or granted the choice to even have the choice of "being who they are" to live how they choose whether that choice go with or against any pre existing cultural tradition. Not everyone is able and certainly not free.I'm finding it more necessary than ever to be fearless, to embody what fearlessness truly means and create not just because I am inspired but because to be able to create in itself is a worldly privilege
