Uh, I think Ann Powers tries a little too hard here to lump all sorts of female performers together, but hey I'm a guy (and also she might have been given a limited wordcount). And maybe discussing Poly Styrene, Aretha, Pussy Riot and Taylor here the way she does makes sense to some. And I kinda like the Avril sound Taylor's going for with Max Martin btw.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

Finally, someone else who thought of Poly Styrene when they heard Taylor Swift.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

"The dialect Swift adopts in her new song is obviously modeled on Lavigne's perky smirk, which itself distills and dilutes a quarter-century's worth of unladylike singers: Patti Smith, Joan Jett, Deborah Harry, Poly Styrene, Exene Cervenka, Cyndi Lauper, Kathleen Hanna, Gwen Stefani, Courtney Love."

this is true as far as it goes. But the laundry list needs editing.

this song is actually getting worse with increased exposure and that video is not helping

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

it's been real, tay

k3vin k., Tuesday, 4 September 2012 04:21 (thirteen years ago)

gets better with more listens imo, and I like the dumb video too.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 04:27 (thirteen years ago)

Great song, great video. Always up for a nerdy Taylor. Do the stuffed animals become Animal Collective when they go from her bedroom to the club?

Earth, Wind & Fire & Alabama (Eazy), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 04:31 (thirteen years ago)

No, taylor be collabbing with Flaming Lips.

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 04:37 (thirteen years ago)

i do not particularly like this song

a hauntingly unemployed american (difficult listening hour), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 05:16 (thirteen years ago)

just had the weirdest revelation that this, especially in the verses, sounds just like Los Campesinos.

how's life, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 08:54 (thirteen years ago)

the goofy expressions on her awful furry band's faces are going to haunt my nightmares ;_;

lex pretend, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 09:53 (thirteen years ago)

i am both amused and repulsed by the animal collective in the video. sort of the same way i felt about all the kids in the crash test dummies video back when that came out.

how's life, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 10:00 (thirteen years ago)

it's mostly that one attention-seeking guitarist with the wacky facial expression, i think?

the verses in this are so forgettable :( still down w/ the hook though.

Remember the tall dude who used to mug for the camera in all the early britney video clips? He's like that dude but with the naked desperation covered by a patina of "wacky" smugness.

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:18 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, that dude's face is burned into my brain and probably my nightmares, but I've got a crush on the cat-ears (?) violinist.

how's life, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:18 (thirteen years ago)

To be fair (?) to her band, I've been impressed for years now how they've stuck to their incredibly ugly hairdos / personal style even as Taylor and her shows got more and more popular. The uncool uncle wanting to be young, the hot topic clerk, etc.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:26 (thirteen years ago)

No selling out there!

abcfsk, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:26 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I think annoying grinny dude was in her band when I saw her back in 2008?

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:28 (thirteen years ago)

grinny dude looks almost exactly like nick grimshaw

i liked this but i sort of don't need to hear this - ever - again

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:32 (thirteen years ago)

it's... exhausting.

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:33 (thirteen years ago)

I think annoying grinny dude was in her band when I saw her back in 2008?

he was! well, he was in her band when i saw her in 2008, so. (i remember being like 'and this one is the pete wentz knock-off, and this one is the...') Mind you at that point I thought her violinist was in her late thirties because her dress sense seemed so... mutton-dressed-as-lamb.

v for viennetta (c sharp major), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:43 (thirteen years ago)

OMG yes I thought the same thing.

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:44 (thirteen years ago)

she was wearing these coloured leopardprint pants that only a woman having a mid-life crisis would wear! i cannot be blamed for being confused.

v for viennetta (c sharp major), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:46 (thirteen years ago)

And they had the face-off during "Should've Said No" with the trash can timpanis.

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 11:48 (thirteen years ago)

haha wait, Taylor was incorporating "Stomp!" into her stage show?

taylor looking bangin', still can't sing live

This cad needs a cordial introduction to Eugene of Oxbow. (forksclovetofu), Friday, 7 September 2012 03:47 (thirteen years ago)

I was there! Pretty awesome. Rest of the vmas paled a bit. One direction is pretty big I guess? Terrible.

omar little, Friday, 7 September 2012 04:48 (thirteen years ago)

New single out for cancer charity, "Ronan". It's on iTunes. Very sparse, very country (lyrically at least). Good vocal performance.

i've really grown to love "we are never ever"

young money color me badd (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:15 (thirteen years ago)

yea ive played 'we are never' a ton

johnny crunch, Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

Vma performance sort of turned me around on it. Still don't think it's great, and part of that is I think there are other people doing that thing a bit better maybe, but I'm not totes against. I can't hear it without thinking of Avril's "What the Hell".

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:22 (thirteen years ago)

that was kinda maudlin

call all destroyer, Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:22 (thirteen years ago)

we are never has won me over too, when i finally noticed the we--EE in the chorus that sealed the deal

call all destroyer, Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:23 (thirteen years ago)

that was kinda maudlin

yeah. well you understand why she sung it for a cancer benefit.

young money color me badd (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:24 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I've come around "we are never.." too. I knew I would, I always do. But, I still don't like the talky part, it was especially awkward during the VMA performance.

brontosaur, Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:24 (thirteen years ago)

the we-EE is the part that keeps it from being really great imo i just cant

johnny crunch, Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:26 (thirteen years ago)

No that's the best bit
