folk metal generally good w keeping any fascist themes unspoken but yeah def tons of uncomfortable implications there. I think ppl generally realize that nazi lyrics won't help sales

Mordy, Friday, 17 August 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

argh you can't keep the "fascist themes unspoken". are you singing about forests?? you are a nazi!! this is crystal clear.

goole, Friday, 17 August 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

i met a regular looking, regular dressing guy who mentioned that he put out some band's records and that it was controversial and caused problems for his label. i asked why controversial and was surprised at how casually he said "well, they're NS." it was really easy for him to say "well, i'm not a nazi and i hate nazis, but i put these nazi records out." i don't know if he thought it had cache or just genuinely thought it didn't reflect on him.

i'm really glad we talk about stuff like this, regardless of how heated or w/e. i don't think i will ever stop listening to burzum, but i have as of this post officially stopped wearing burzum shirts out. i don't know. obv don't want strangers thinking i support their systematic death (!!), and i guess previously i felt that wasn't an inference that could be made without a kind of working knowledge of the band and genre, and that said knowledge defused that possible thought. spend too much time around people really immersed in the richly storied history of bm (lol) and not enough time IRL, i guess?

not that i wear burzum shirts too often anyway - they make you look like a noob

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

i dont know if this is all that relevant, but a guy in my band wore the cripple bastards shirt with the photograph of a woman giving oral sex with a gun to her head on it and i lost it. he had a short defense of only wearing it where he wouldn't be judged by it, and i remember saying "only places where you know none of the women there have been raped?" he threw the shirt away immediately. that's been on my mind a lot today. knowing that someone might see it and immediately associate it with danger or any bad memory or bad feeling is so not worth it as to be ridiculous.

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 19:03 (thirteen years ago)

also, still dying at the burzum jersey with a pot leaf!! hahaha this is like it was made by a bizarro varg to detroy the actual varg through kryptonite-like powers

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

varg: so not baller

goole, Friday, 17 August 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

does anyone remember what thread it was where someone attempted to prove that varg was holding a bag of andy capp's hot fries when he got out of jail

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

Varg's release date thread

steven fucking tyler (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 17 August 2012 19:18 (thirteen years ago)

haha its mentioned there but i feel like there was some deep discussion about it, maybe it was in chat or maybe i invented it all in my mind

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

he had a short defense of only wearing it where he wouldn't be judged by it,

lol @ this rationale. "I am going to wear a t-shirt specifically designed to be as offensive as possible, but I am not going to wear it where it might offend anybody"

Shameful Dead Half Choogle (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 17 August 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

or else he's just really into handgun-induced blowjobs, not sure which is worse

Shameful Dead Half Choogle (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 17 August 2012 19:51 (thirteen years ago)

so i guess you stopped reading there

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 19:52 (thirteen years ago)

if you want me to commend him for throwing the shirt away because you gave him shit for it, okay, don't see how that invalidates my response but whatever

Shameful Dead Half Choogle (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

youre right, he's clearly just really into handgun-induced blowjobs

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

thats a natural thing to get out of that story, not that he was just a person wearing an offensive shirt who hadnt thought about its implications, and when he did think about them felt remorseful

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

I guess this thread is as good a place as any to ask, should I stop wearing this T-shirt:

well its ugly and i dont like lair of the minotaur but i dont think youre going to run into many people who fear being attacked by flying goats if thats what youre asking

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

i wouldnt wear it to teach kids showchoir, but its probably ok at the bar

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

depends how likely you think it is that someone would have consensual sex with a minotaur

pandemic, Friday, 17 August 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, I suppose that that intercourse with the demon could be consensual.

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

thats def not a minotaur

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

not that he was just a person wearing an offensive shirt who hadnt thought about its implications,

was making a joke in that even in giving him the benefit of the doubt that he's NOT into handgun-induced blowjobs, the alternative explanation is not really that much better

Shameful Dead Half Choogle (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

all my best metal-shirt-wearing experiences (lol) occur while wearing my Abruptum - Pure Black Evil shirt. once passed a greek orthodox priest in the long flowing robes and all - he looked at my shirt as we passed each other and made the best face, just a knowing smirk with a slight laugh as if to say "lol that band thinks they know what evil is"

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:47 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i did my tl;dr upthread already but i find the pervasive low-level misogyny in the scene much worse than the rabid racism of a few non-consequential norwegians

the late great, Friday, 17 August 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

high level imo. ive heard people say that if women arent being hurt at a show that something is wrong. ive been completely surrounded by riled up guys at a death metal show cheering an onstage rant about duct taping a woman's mouth shut and shooting her. blake judd saying a woman who accuses someone of rape multiple times is obviously lying. just a zillion things every day, its truly awful in metal. i've encountered stuff i never ever had to face just playing reg rock music

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

Yikes that's horrifying

Lil Swayne of Pie (DJP), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

i should say i think its particularly bad in death metal/grind. i dont know why. black metal is a little bit better, but i think its just that less frat types are attracted to it

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

the late great, Friday, 17 August 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

death metal and grind i guess also just kind of generally concerned with "being gross". lol

xpost

blake judd saying a woman who accuses someone of rape multiple times is obviously lying.

and yeah leviathan dude can FOD

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

I guess the difference between Varg and Judd/Whitehead is that the former is a convicted, admitted, unrepentant murderer, racist, and arsonist. The Leviathan thing is still ongoing, and Whitehead hasn't actually been convicted of the crime yet, so until he is, it's possible that Judd and Whitehead are justified in denouncing Whitehead's accuser based on their experiences with her (i.e., maybe she is a crazy person). That said, if Whitehead IS convicted, he is a total scumbag and Judd lousy for defending him, but that hasn't happened yet.

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 August 2012 23:06 (thirteen years ago)

Whitehead was convicted of aggravated domestic battery, wasn't he?

Temporarily Famous In The Czech Republic (ShariVari), Friday, 17 August 2012 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, looks like he was. I guess that's what I get for not paying attention to things. I apologize, he is a jerk. Carry on.

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 August 2012 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

On the flipside, 33 of the 34 charges did get dropped or dismissed, so it sounds like the accusations were exaggerated to some extent? I guess it comes down to that "clear vs. unclear" thing, where Varg is clearly guilty as hell but the whole Leviathan thing is still murky. And I say this as someone who isn't even really a Leviathan fan, so it's not like I'm stumping for a musician I love.

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 August 2012 23:21 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know why I'm getting involved in this, there's no way I'm going to come out of it looking good… Arguing on the Internet, am I right?

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 August 2012 23:23 (thirteen years ago)

to me a special treat in the Jef Whitehead coverage has been watching men in metal press do the same thing they do with Varg, i.e., run interviews & pieces that try to be "evenhanded" instead of just saying "we're going to cover this guy - he's a fucking cancer, but whatever." Dude assaults a woman & then records an album called True Traitor, True Whore - Stereogum writer describes people being outraged by the charges as "wild amounts of handwringing and rushes to judgment." Completely disgusting

steven fucking tyler (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 17 August 2012 23:24 (thirteen years ago)

BWA-HA-HA-HA! BWA-HA-HA-HA! fuck. *tears*

how's life, Friday, 17 August 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, there's "evenhandedness" and then there's "giving people the benefit of the doubt." That said, Whitehead certainly didn't do himself any favors vis-à-vis public opinion, that's for sure.

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 August 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

When you guys were talking all like "the guy from Leviathan" I thought you meant "the guy from Mastodon" though. I was all like "yeah, fuck those false metal hard rock sellouts *hides tshirt*"

how's life, Friday, 17 August 2012 23:34 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't know why I'm defending Whitehead, he's probably a scumbag – he certainly likes to present himself as such. There is a definite difference between that whole thing and Varg, though, who never even really denied his crimes other than to say that he did it in self-defense because the voices in his head told him that Euronymous was plotting against him and then crawled into the kitchen to try to get a knife AFTER Varg had attacked him.
