somewhat relatedly if you've never listened to black metal when you're really really high you're missing out

― steven fucking tyler (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, August 17, 2012 8:59 AM (1 minute ago)

otm, but then again, i was high when i decided i had to get rid of my burzum records. "why do i feel i need to own that playable swastika?"

contenderizer, Friday, 17 August 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

high contederizer otm!

steven fucking tyler (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 17 August 2012 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

lol, in a similar state last night i thought about turning on a burzum record pretty much entirely bc of this thread (i was deciding between umskipstar which i haven't heard yet or classic filosofem) but then i was like there is so much other music in the world to listen to that i will definitely enjoy. so i listened to something else instead. i do not regret that decision.

Mordy, Friday, 17 August 2012 16:22 (thirteen years ago)

see that's what i'm talking about.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

how much will your life suffer if you don't listen to burzum? on the other hand i don't think i can live without my dissection records. on the other other hand at least he did the noble viking thing and killed himself.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

fwiw i was trying to argue up there that music about forests is fascist. if you are writing songs about forests, you are making nazi music.

LOLOLOLOL

My first visit back home, in 95, after I moved to Seattle, I went roving around the St. Paul skyway system for nostalgia's sake and saw two brownshirts + their girlfriends strolling in Town Square. Just about fell over (haunted the skyways as a young nerd and NEVER saw that)

Lewis Apparition (Jon Lewis), Friday, 17 August 2012 16:34 (thirteen years ago)

i really have no idea what the deal is with white power dudes in STP these days. i know it's part of the city's history from like 20 years ago but i kinda feel like the less i know the better.

whenever i see a white dude with a buzzcut and ugly tattoos at the Y i do get a little nervous

goole, Friday, 17 August 2012 16:42 (thirteen years ago)

why cant they be nazis instead of burzum

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

in all the years i lived in philly i saw a grand total of one person wearing a screwdriver t-shirt. and it was memorable! i even remember where i was when i saw it. i saw some skinheads outside the coffee shop i worked at throwing snowballs at people once. they even threw them at old ladies.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

there was a record store in philly and one of the guys who owned it was a beatles nut and the other guy who owned it was a skinhead nut! kinda weird. they had screwdriver records behind the counter. good oi! section. i bought safer oi! there. i bought some richard allen collections there.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

My understanding is they come (came?) from the part of stpl across the river from downtown?

Lewis Apparition (Jon Lewis), Friday, 17 August 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

jjj, secret fascist

catbus otm (gbx), Friday, 17 August 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

anyway, philly not a hotbed for that kinda action. at least not then. lots of very dangerous skinny puppy fans though.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

isn't the label that puts out screwdriver records based in newport or something??

catbus otm (gbx), Friday, 17 August 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

what just gettin some coffee in lowertown, hangin at the zen center…

i don't know what other people are thinking but honestly i can barely understand any of the words in any black metal so it seems like it's kind of irrelevant what anyone is singing about

j., Friday, 17 August 2012 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

One of the delicious ironies of Varg is that, although he decried drug use as "stereotypical Negro behavior" in some look-at-me interview a while back, his albums are great when stoned. What is "Rundgang der blah blah" if not a "get high and watch your consciousness dissolve" track? If these are in some sense Nazi records, they sure don't inspire me to violence. They're total chill-out records.

Clarke B., Friday, 17 August 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)

ah yes how delicious, his records are best enjoyed while acting like a stereotypical Negro *arches eyebrow in delighted whimsy*

Lil Swayne of Pie (DJP), Friday, 17 August 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

I mean it's my own damn fault for being on this thread but you do see how this could be an extremely off-putting conversation for some people, right

this is some Algonquin table level zingage

steven fucking tyler (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 17 August 2012 17:49 (thirteen years ago)

I was just trying to point out how clueless he seems to be even about the way his own music might be received; I truly didn't mean to press buttons or offend. I do see your point, DJP, and I apologize.

Clarke B., Friday, 17 August 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

I appreciate that. I'm honestly not trying to shut down the conversation but that was a little much for me.

Lil Swayne of Pie (DJP), Friday, 17 August 2012 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

the DP zing however was delicious

i do agree that weed is if not a must for 2nd wave bm listening then at least strongly suggested. one of the best music listening experiences of my life was being way too stoned and listening to ordo ad chao, really was like being happily swallowed alive. i like a lot of repetitive bm that is so fast it sounds slow, and that i do find to be chill out music.

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

are kroda nazis?

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)

its kinda sad that when you look up a black metal or folk metal band on encyc metallum and their lyrical themes include "history" they turn out to be nazis 90% of the time

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

sad meaning pathetic. would hate to assign legit emotions to something resulting from consulting encyclopedia metallum. obv it is legitimately sad that the genre is so lousy with horrible people.

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

folk metal generally good w keeping any fascist themes unspoken but yeah def tons of uncomfortable implications there. I think ppl generally realize that nazi lyrics won't help sales

Mordy, Friday, 17 August 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

argh you can't keep the "fascist themes unspoken". are you singing about forests?? you are a nazi!! this is crystal clear.

goole, Friday, 17 August 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

lol goole

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

i met a regular looking, regular dressing guy who mentioned that he put out some band's records and that it was controversial and caused problems for his label. i asked why controversial and was surprised at how casually he said "well, they're NS." it was really easy for him to say "well, i'm not a nazi and i hate nazis, but i put these nazi records out." i don't know if he thought it had cache or just genuinely thought it didn't reflect on him.

i'm really glad we talk about stuff like this, regardless of how heated or w/e. i don't think i will ever stop listening to burzum, but i have as of this post officially stopped wearing burzum shirts out. i don't know. obv don't want strangers thinking i support their systematic death (!!), and i guess previously i felt that wasn't an inference that could be made without a kind of working knowledge of the band and genre, and that said knowledge defused that possible thought. spend too much time around people really immersed in the richly storied history of bm (lol) and not enough time IRL, i guess?

not that i wear burzum shirts too often anyway - they make you look like a noob

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

i dont know if this is all that relevant, but a guy in my band wore the cripple bastards shirt with the photograph of a woman giving oral sex with a gun to her head on it and i lost it. he had a short defense of only wearing it where he wouldn't be judged by it, and i remember saying "only places where you know none of the women there have been raped?" he threw the shirt away immediately. that's been on my mind a lot today. knowing that someone might see it and immediately associate it with danger or any bad memory or bad feeling is so not worth it as to be ridiculous.

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 19:03 (thirteen years ago)

also, still dying at the burzum jersey with a pot leaf!! hahaha this is like it was made by a bizarro varg to detroy the actual varg through kryptonite-like powers

haha its mentioned there but i feel like there was some deep discussion about it, maybe it was in chat or maybe i invented it all in my mind

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

he had a short defense of only wearing it where he wouldn't be judged by it,

lol @ this rationale. "I am going to wear a t-shirt specifically designed to be as offensive as possible, but I am not going to wear it where it might offend anybody"
