O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 August 2012 04:13 (thirteen years ago)

nah i believe it. bm in general is hipster catnip. since the 90's.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:21 (thirteen years ago)

hipster cats have been listening to bm since the 90's. whiney knows.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:22 (thirteen years ago)

"listening to"

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 04:23 (thirteen years ago)

mostly just talking about and wearing

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 04:23 (thirteen years ago)

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:23 (thirteen years ago)

it all depends on the hipster. its a hipster case by case basis. see i know that guy and that picture will always be hilarious. plus, he's punk as fuck.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:27 (thirteen years ago)

i 100% reject the notion that the wearing of a burzum shirt indicates that one is "a little ok with racism"

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 04:29 (thirteen years ago)

indeed

mookieproof, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:30 (thirteen years ago)

This is all VON's fault.

StanM, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:31 (thirteen years ago)

(the music, I mean, not the racist BS)

StanM, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

i do believe that the wearing of a burzum t-shirt does mean that you yourself - the t-shirt wearer - have little fear of being attacked because of your race. 99.9% of the time.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:34 (thirteen years ago)

man, darkspace are just incredible.

really not enough sci-fi metal imo

just seems like non-metal people go directly to burzum or for some perverse "trangressive" reason. it's tiresome. try the ring cycle sometime! talk about transgressive.

― scott seward, Thursday, August 16, 2012 8:13 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

I think non-metal people go to Burzum for some of the same reasons non-R&B people go to the Weeknd or Frank Ocean or whatever, to be fair; it's what's hyped and discussed in their (non-inner) circles.

roxy otm about this stuff. when i became curious about black metal in the late 90s, i initially gravitated towards the "foundational" stuff: burzum, darkthrone, emperor, mayhem, etc. also random shit like carpathian forest. this was in part based on what i'd read here and there, but also on a good 2CD comp that a friend of a friend had made - included stuff by all those bands, and others. i knew bits and pieces of the story, but not that much. can't deny the more awful elements added a bit of transgressive intrigue. a good backstory always helps.

actually, the very first BM album i ever picked up was by graveland, a blind buy based on needle-dropping and cuz it was used & cheap. got creeped out by some of the symbolism and the record label, so i sold it back almost immediately. anyway, i'm advocating against the praise of burzum's music because it is foundational, and because filosofem is so often held up one of the genre's defining (and transcendent) classics. varg doesn't deserve that kind of attention.

contenderizer, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:52 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i shouldn't get into this. and i rarely think about burzum. usually only when this thread pops up. sorry.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 05:00 (thirteen years ago)

the problem here is that despite all the bullshit that surrounds it and the bullshit spewed by varg, filosofem and other early burzum records are exceptional and amazing untouchable pieces of work. and yeah it sucks that dude is a piece of shit, but it seems like some of you are arguing that the moral stance is to just shut up about it and pretend that they aren't thx to dude being a horrible person, but as a dude that legitimately thinks they are pretty much mind-blowing (and a dude that couldn't give a shit abt his controversy and wishes that some other not terrible dude had made these awesome records), i dont know what people want me to do? i guess either lie and say they suck/ignore them, or force myself to think that they are crap because dude is an asshole? i get the motivation there, but wtf

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:12 (thirteen years ago)

most people are going back and deciding the albums are bad which is lol

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:13 (thirteen years ago)

i dont know, its meaningful to me that horrible people can make good things. i dont know why. if hitler had painted a painting i liked i would look at/think about it. doesnt mean i would wear a shirt that said "adolf hitler", but i won't wear a shirt that says "varg vikernes" either.

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:15 (thirteen years ago)

and again, if you take that stance, then i hope yall are willing to 86 all the hellhammer stuff that its ok to like (mayhem, arcturus, etc) because if not then idk what to say, because if this is abt racism/advocating for murder (and not actual murder/church burning) you dont have a leg to stand on xxpost

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:17 (thirteen years ago)

no i still think that stuff is good. i just don't need to hear excuses for why people listen to them. or backflips. the whole "well he may be a horrible racist and murderer, BUT..."

cuz nobody looks good doing that. just listen to them or whatever. i didn't mean shut up like never talk about the music just shut up with the moral loopdeloops and all that. its silly.

everyone knows what his place is in the bm netherworld. everyone knows what a fucking moron he is. enuff znuff.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 05:18 (thirteen years ago)

and wasn't saying shut up to anyone here in particular. but i've heard it in real life from people too. like they want me to tell them its okay to listen to burzum! no for real. they will talk about how much they like those records and then hem and haw about the dude and they feel bad about it or whatever. i don't give a shit if they feel bad. maybe they should feel bad. go to a therapist or something.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 05:21 (thirteen years ago)

i think that people (well ok me) get forced to make those excuses because really what i want to say is "oh shit the first 5 burzum albums are amazing" without a caveat, but i know that i cant say that without somebody coming along and playing the "o u racist" game. and im not.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:24 (thirteen years ago)

scott otm, i guess. i've certain said my piece(s).

that album cover is hilarious btw

lets be fair, if you want to go down the black metal road, its pretty much lined w/hateful assholes and total creeps. such is life!

i had nice things to say about arcturus once:

http://www.villagevoice.com/2003-05-06/music/werewolves-of-norway/

but i kinda made them sound like hell too.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 05:40 (thirteen years ago)

It is true that bm in particular is p full of assholes. I feel like its a tacit understanding amongst fans of the genre that you don't nec support anything the persons involved in making the album actually do or think. Of course there are also loads of great and smart ppl doing it too, and it's a special treat when you find someone like say Ludicra

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:43 (thirteen years ago)

you liked Arcturus!!

hello?

THE RACUSM IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE THREAD!!!

the late great, Friday, 17 August 2012 10:11 (thirteen years ago)

why don't people just listen to other good black metal? there is a ton of it. unless you are siegbran. then you are just a lost cause and a lifer. and siegbran does own every graveland album. autographed even!

I'm going to assume you're being sarcastic here.

Siegbran, Friday, 17 August 2012 10:12 (thirteen years ago)

i was being sarcastic there.

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 12:40 (thirteen years ago)

i 100% reject the notion that the wearing of a burzum shirt indicates that one is "a little ok with racism"

it kinda does though! "I'm willing to advertise this album by a white nationalist" is at least part of what a Burzum t-shirt says, to a certain extent you don't get to define the terms of the brand you wear.

steven fucking tyler (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 17 August 2012 12:56 (thirteen years ago)

i really do think it means "racism doesn't effect my life".

scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 13:07 (thirteen years ago)

i'd like to add a burzum tshirt related anecdote

a few years ago i was at the empty bottle in chicago, and i was there to see nachtmystium, and maybe yakuza? i don't remember who the other two bands were. who cares. anyway, it was around the time that there was a bit of brouhaha about the band going soft/darkwave/gothy/dance and the singer/guitarist/guy whose band it is had just gotten his hair cut much shorter (doesn't sound like a big deal, but i heard people talking!) and before the show he was hanging around the bar and...wearing a burzum tshirt.

by the time he went on stage, he had changed his shirt. i don't remember what the band was, only that he had changed it. i never really figured out what this meant, though -- to him, to the other people there, to whomever. (i also didn't ask anyone) does this happen all the time? i couldn't even figure out really what this said to me about him and his motivations to myself. i don't know the guy, i certainly can't read his mind. how would i know what that means?

tl; dr
in a way i think any one way of viewing burzum shirt wearing does not cover the spectrum of possible implications, so just airing out what it means to different people is a valuable exercise. at least i think so. also i suppose i am a hipster douchebag for being at this show in the first place. (j/k, i'm not)

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Friday, 17 August 2012 13:37 (thirteen years ago)

i'm sorry if this has been said like 100x already
i skimmed a little

I agree with this completely.
