("nor the idea that you don't really "need" to listen to him" I mean to type)
― Clarke B., Friday, 17 August 2012 03:33 (thirteen years ago)
when decibel magazine - a magazine i wrote for and a magazine that had my name printed in it - put varg on the cover and did an interview with him and reviewed his post-prison stuff it just seemed normal to me! i mean, he's a metal guy. part of the history of metal. i know his history, but it just seemed like the kind of a thing a metal magazine would do! and i know they got some shit for it, but i don't think they got a ton of shit. now, i really think it was the wrong move. i'm just sick of hearing about him. and i think siegbran is wrong. he has gotten positive reviews and serious press. here in the states. people take him seriously! and he just spews the dumbest fucking shit you could ever hear from a person. the metal world should turn their backs. for real. just let him do his shit on his own and ignore him. the metal press, that is. he's infamous and will always have an audience. no need for any more ink about him.
― scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 03:39 (thirteen years ago)
just listen to darkspace over and over and over again. siegbran's other favorite band. you really don't need burzum in your life.

i also am sick of hearing about him, but i am not sick of hearing filosofem. tired also of the condescending nature of the comments about there being other metal out there. we're not noobs.

i wasn't talking to you. or at you. or about you. was talking about people - in general - who don't listen to metal (or much metal) who feel that they HAVE to listen to burzum. for some reason.
― scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 03:50 (thirteen years ago)
Darkspace sound pretty freaking amazing, Scott... I'll have to check them out! (I'm weird about encountering a band for the first time via YouTube; if I'm going to give them a fair shake, I want it to sound good.) I wish I had a To Mega Therion shirt.
― Clarke B., Friday, 17 August 2012 03:58 (thirteen years ago)
oh people who dont listen to metal can generally stfu about the whole situation, i agree
― the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 04:04 (thirteen years ago)
that's crap
― goole, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:05 (thirteen years ago)
but also i feel like i should point out that black metal noobs w/ genuine interest are probably drawn to burzum because it is foundational! anyone listening to mayhem, darkthrone, emperor, immortal, etc would obv listen to burzum also. most intro to bm lists would mention burzum, rightly.
― the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 04:06 (thirteen years ago)
i think noobs with no real interest in bm who wear burzum shirts for shock value or w/e are a phenom that i am not familiar with

This is me for sure. He's one of the few names that gets mentioned as super-core canonical BM.
― Clarke B., Friday, 17 August 2012 04:10 (thirteen years ago)
I have also never seen a burzum short outside of srs metal shows/obv srs metal peeps. Sounds a little hipster straw an to me tbh.
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 August 2012 04:12 (thirteen years ago)
Fucking fuck u iphone.
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 August 2012 04:13 (thirteen years ago)
nah i believe it. bm in general is hipster catnip. since the 90's.
― scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:21 (thirteen years ago)
hipster cats have been listening to bm since the 90's. whiney knows.
― scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:22 (thirteen years ago)
"listening to"
― the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 04:23 (thirteen years ago)
mostly just talking about and wearing
bm t-shirts kinda the only exceptable hepcat t-shirt. its a design thing.
― scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:23 (thirteen years ago)
i have never seen a burzum t-shirt in my six years in nyc, although tbf i don't roll w/ the hipsters like whiney

it all depends on the hipster. its a hipster case by case basis. see i know that guy and that picture will always be hilarious. plus, he's punk as fuck.
― scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:27 (thirteen years ago)
i 100% reject the notion that the wearing of a burzum shirt indicates that one is "a little ok with racism"
― the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 04:29 (thirteen years ago)
indeed
― mookieproof, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:30 (thirteen years ago)
This is all VON's fault.
― StanM, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:31 (thirteen years ago)
(the music, I mean, not the racist BS)
― StanM, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:33 (thirteen years ago)
i do believe that the wearing of a burzum t-shirt does mean that you yourself - the t-shirt wearer - have little fear of being attacked because of your race. 99.9% of the time.
― scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:34 (thirteen years ago)
man, darkspace are just incredible.

just seems like non-metal people go directly to burzum or for some perverse "trangressive" reason. it's tiresome. try the ring cycle sometime! talk about transgressive.― scott seward, Thursday, August 16, 2012 8:13 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post PermalinkI think non-metal people go to Burzum for some of the same reasons non-R&B people go to the Weeknd or Frank Ocean or whatever, to be fair; it's what's hyped and discussed in their (non-inner) circles.― Clarke B., Thursday, August 16, 2012 8:15 PM (1 hour ago)

actually, the very first BM album i ever picked up was by graveland, a blind buy based on needle-dropping and cuz it was used & cheap. got creeped out by some of the symbolism and the record label, so i sold it back almost immediately. anyway, i'm advocating against the praise of burzum's music because it is foundational, and because filosofem is so often held up one of the genre's defining (and transcendent) classics. varg doesn't deserve that kind of attention.
― contenderizer, Friday, 17 August 2012 04:52 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i shouldn't get into this. and i rarely think about burzum. usually only when this thread pops up. sorry.
― scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 05:00 (thirteen years ago)
the problem here is that despite all the bullshit that surrounds it and the bullshit spewed by varg, filosofem and other early burzum records are exceptional and amazing untouchable pieces of work. and yeah it sucks that dude is a piece of shit, but it seems like some of you are arguing that the moral stance is to just shut up about it and pretend that they aren't thx to dude being a horrible person, but as a dude that legitimately thinks they are pretty much mind-blowing (and a dude that couldn't give a shit abt his controversy and wishes that some other not terrible dude had made these awesome records), i dont know what people want me to do? i guess either lie and say they suck/ignore them, or force myself to think that they are crap because dude is an asshole? i get the motivation there, but wtf
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:12 (thirteen years ago)
most people are going back and deciding the albums are bad which is lol
― the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:13 (thirteen years ago)
i dont know, its meaningful to me that horrible people can make good things. i dont know why. if hitler had painted a painting i liked i would look at/think about it. doesnt mean i would wear a shirt that said "adolf hitler", but i won't wear a shirt that says "varg vikernes" either.
― the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:15 (thirteen years ago)
and again, if you take that stance, then i hope yall are willing to 86 all the hellhammer stuff that its ok to like (mayhem, arcturus, etc) because if not then idk what to say, because if this is abt racism/advocating for murder (and not actual murder/church burning) you dont have a leg to stand on xxpost
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:17 (thirteen years ago)
no i still think that stuff is good. i just don't need to hear excuses for why people listen to them. or backflips. the whole "well he may be a horrible racist and murderer, BUT..."
cuz nobody looks good doing that. just listen to them or whatever. i didn't mean shut up like never talk about the music just shut up with the moral loopdeloops and all that. its silly.
everyone knows what his place is in the bm netherworld. everyone knows what a fucking moron he is. enuff znuff.
― scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 05:18 (thirteen years ago)
and wasn't saying shut up to anyone here in particular. but i've heard it in real life from people too. like they want me to tell them its okay to listen to burzum! no for real. they will talk about how much they like those records and then hem and haw about the dude and they feel bad about it or whatever. i don't give a shit if they feel bad. maybe they should feel bad. go to a therapist or something.
― scott seward, Friday, 17 August 2012 05:21 (thirteen years ago)
i think that people (well ok me) get forced to make those excuses because really what i want to say is "oh shit the first 5 burzum albums are amazing" without a caveat, but i know that i cant say that without somebody coming along and playing the "o u racist" game. and im not.
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:24 (thirteen years ago)
scott otm, i guess. i've certain said my piece(s).

― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 August 2012 05:28 (thirteen years ago)
no cuz barf
that album cover is hilarious btw
― contenderizer, Friday, 17 August 2012 05:29 (thirteen years ago)
lets be fair, if you want to go down the black metal road, its pretty much lined w/hateful assholes and total creeps. such is life!
