One of my friends gave me "16 Stone' for my birthday in college - it's the only time I've ever been openly pissed off about a birthday present. Mainly because a) he was kind of a dick anyway so he wouldn't take it badly and b) he knew my music tastes pretty well and I was furious that he thought I would like it, lol

forgot to explore the oeuvre, voted "comedown" since it was the one i most would enjoy hearing at the moment

da croupier, Thursday, 9 August 2012 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 10 August 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

admittedly there's not really RIGHT results for something like this but these are shockingly rong

some dude, Friday, 10 August 2012 00:03 (thirteen years ago)

23 people who voted are not nuts

da croupier, Friday, 10 August 2012 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

haha not unexpected results

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 August 2012 00:12 (thirteen years ago)

i personally didn't expect "Swallowed" to beat 4/5ths of the Sixteen Stone singles and a song i've never heard of to beat 2/5ths of them!

some dude, Friday, 10 August 2012 00:19 (thirteen years ago)

btw holy crap Razorblade Suitcase went 3x plat? i thought for sure it was a Fairweather Johnson but perhaps it's a New Jersey.

some dude, Friday, 10 August 2012 00:20 (thirteen years ago)

Letting the Cables Sleep 2
wtf is this

billstevejim, Friday, 10 August 2012 00:53 (thirteen years ago)

the third single from the album with "The Chemicals Between Us" on it, apparently.

would vote for almost anything over "Glycerine," including "Kiss The Rain"

some dude, Friday, 10 August 2012 01:06 (thirteen years ago)

as in billie myers?

billstevejim, Friday, 10 August 2012 01:08 (thirteen years ago)

I'll still halfheartedly rep for most of 16 Stone. If they had any songs with coherent lyrics it would be easier.

On the other hand, Jesus Christ wtf is this:

Come, Togheter!

Doctor Casino, Friday, 10 August 2012 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks for voting, everybody.

Razorblade Suitcase somewhere between a Fairweather Johnson and a Be Here Now IMO. Might just be a Bad Album.

Razorblade is definitely a fairweather johnson - sixteen went 6x platinum during a window from jan '95 to april '97, Razorblade went 3x platinum from Nov '96 to July '97. People were just in the Bush-purchasing mood, razorblade really never achieved a life of its own.

da croupier, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

which is why the Razorblade singles getting a respectable 15 votes vs. Sixteen Stone's 22 votes surprised me

Pollopolicía (some dude), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

you forget we are people who know who steve albini is

da croupier, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:37 (thirteen years ago)

america may not care, but future rock critics and nerds took note

da croupier, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:37 (thirteen years ago)

48 votes for a Bush poll? Huh

da croupier, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

but even kids like me at the time, as well as adult critics, saw the Albini hiring as a pretty transparent grab for cred and/or even more Nirvana comparisons! it's not like that album won skeptics over to the extent of The Bends or even Purple. (xpost)

Pollopolicía (some dude), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)

glycerine is so bad

goole, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

the string bit at the end is pretty cool tho

goole, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, could be salvaged as a loop for some "Bittersweet Symphony" type thing, but song itself is the biggest turd.

Pollopolicía (some dude), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

i cannot believe this many people voted in this poll. these songs are terrible.

"swallowed" did, though. in a sense it's their "lakini's juice"

da croupier, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, "Machinehead" was like Top 10 for the year '96 airplay-wise.

this made me laugh, then mad at myself for remembering lyrics to "machinehead"

horseshoe, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

lol

honestly i had no real sense anyone especially liked "Swallowed" for 16 years before this poll

Pollopolicía (some dude), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

jesus christ, sixteen years

Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 August 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

re "Swallowed" at the time I thought, "Oh, well, Albini did improve them" but then a girl who liked Mazzy Star brought Razorblade Suitcase into the newsroom and we all cleared our throats and played The Saint soundtrack for the nth time.

since when did lakinis juice win people over

billstevejim, Monday, 13 August 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

"Lakini's Juice" C or D?

Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 August 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

"their finest track" - miccio
"my favorite Live single" - Herbert Herbert
"the only Live song that doesn't make me vomit and/or laugh" - VegemiteGrrl

Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 August 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

tbf me and herb are friends from high school but both "lakini" and "swallowed" are TA-DAAAAA first singles from follow-ups that boldly announced the band's desire to take corporate rock in bold directions so no shock 10+ ilxors dig 'em in polls

da croupier, Monday, 13 August 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

did i mention them shits were bold cuz brother they were bold

da croupier, Monday, 13 August 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

I think we've touched on this before as a general pattern of the way alt-rock records got marketed (commercially disappointing major label rock/alternative albums of 1996 , Stylus's Top Ten Momentum Killing Follow-Up Singles to Breakthrough Post-Grunge Albums) - actually, it was you and billstevejim that really made me notice this pattern of the grating, noisy, BOLD first single with the intended mainstream rock/pop hit waiting in the wings. In hindsight a really weird strategy, very specific to that moment in time.

One stone unturned: who started that trend? Within alt-rock it probably traces really easily to Nevermind but does it have deeper roots?

Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 August 2012 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

earlier example: "welcome to the jungle" followed by "sweet child o' mine"
