Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

perv

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

big crowd last night - did anyone else notice any distortion at certain points...? I heard some pops that definitely sounded like digital artifacting...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

on the high end, definitely -- was actually sitting right next to mixing board near Matt and Cliff, and especially in second half, saw a lot of crazy sounds that were direct results of crazy movement on the mixer. still loved it tho. actually, I totally forgot ILM people were going to be there -- would love to have met up!

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

yeah I would have too but we got there a little late and then my will call tickets weren't there and I was surprised by how many people were there etc. In general I enjoyed it, although the piece is totally harsh at certain points and probably longer than I would have liked. Also coulda done without those pussies leaving in the middle of the first section!

My favorite parts were the "red" vocal recitation in the first section, and then those endless rolling ring-modulated waves going back and forth in the second one. We were right next to the far-left speaker in the back though, and definitely caught some way-too-loud frequencies at certain points.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

wasn't loud enough for me -- a lot of those distorted rips are actually on the tape, and Matt was augmenting them at the mixer. the little dropouts & spittles in the chords at the beginning of the second hour were definitely ADAT glitches though (Matt made a joke about the 'state of the art' DA88 tape deck they had to rent in order to play the ancient tapes sent from Stockhausen Verlag)

hearing the piece in surround was like hearing it for the first time, I was fully gone from the very first filter sweep

SF Sound = city treasure, can hardly wait until their new season begins in March

it's at the actual SF Mint:

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

it's what used to be BOCA near 5th and Mission.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

San Franciscans. Come out tonight if you're looking for a good bar with good drinks, and perhaps some disco. Shameless self promotion, I know. Either way, it will be a good time. Chill, but definitely fun. Also, Friday is Lindstrom & Carl Craig, as you know. Quickly followed by a ton of other great shows, and some more in the near future that I can talk about as soon as they're confirmed. Let's just say there's nothing at any festival worth going to this year that won't be coming to Mezzanine. I love my job!

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Thursday, 8 February 2007 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

mint lounge is BOCA? which is a spot that shut down primarily because of the constant noise complaints from the tenants upstairs? this will end well...

mikebee (heywood), Thursday, 8 February 2007 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
BOCA has no residents upstairs. it's an office building.

what's going on in SF, people?

Cameron Octigan, Monday, 26 February 2007 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure the noise complaints were a major cause of the problems there -- as i heard regular stories from its owners, Will & Monica of Blasthaus.

what's going on in SF is the same thing that's been going on since 1997/8 - NIMBY-ism, gentrification, suburban people moving into an urban environment and then fighting super hard to turn that urban environment into the suburbs...

but honestly, if you went to the Gun Club last night, it would have seemed like 1993 all over again!

BATTAGS, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

gun club was easily the funnest nights i've had out in the city in a LONG time.

jaxon, Monday, 26 February 2007 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

Hey! We're playing Bottom of the Hill tonight.

http://www.societyofrockets.org/2-27-bttm-hill.jpg

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

So, the upcoming Kontrol party looks good, eh?

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

the Gun Club thing was fun, eh? the last few times i've been to their parties it's been a very marginal turnout and just more depressing than fun, so i didn't go. also, i was up until 8 am with some friends the night before, so ... i was still in recovery.

i think i'm getting old. going out with my friends is more fun than seeing ANY specific artist. i mean, even when i'm at a show that i thought i'd be interested in, i just get bored. i don't know.

Cameron Octigan, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

wait till you get my age, sonny.

i really wasn't expecting much. last time i saw sweeny and twitch at gun club, i wasn't really feeling it. way too techy. the first dj or two were playing techier stuff again (which got me kinda scared), but the 3rd guy came on (think he played at double dutch one night) switched things up to a really nice disco set and i was totally stoked.

this thing really was a rave. pretty funny. you had to call the day of to find out where it was. it was in an abandoned office building (next door to hemlock), had projectors on the walls and went till 6. luckily they kept serving drinks all night. super hipstery. the first time i've danced in years.

jaxon, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 04:14 (nineteen years ago)

that's not an abandoned office building -- that's Moulton Street Studios. those doors around the main room led to a few very tricked out studios!

BATTAGS, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 07:01 (nineteen years ago)

shakey - i wish i'd checked this earlier and come along to see you. ended up at the trannyshack. bye bye san francisco.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 10:05 (nineteen years ago)

let me chime in on gun club... i'm from san diego and actually flew up just for the evening just to see tim and twitch. might sound a bit crazy, but i'd always wanted to experience an optimo night, and a ticket to SFO is way cheaper than an international flight to glasgow, so i was actually saving money! (and the ticket was dirt cheap)

can't add much more to what's already been said. it was completely worth it, i had such a fantastic time. EVERYBODY was getting into it and it was nuts.

twitch is down here tonite in sd, but the bar he'll be at is quite small (and quite legal, no 6am shenanigans like at gun). tim was here last week and he set it off so I'm sure twitch will be great, but it certainly won't be like sf. very very glad i made it.

bobdazzla, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

Stirry why u brake heart!! I didn't even know you were in town : ( We could've done some Hawkwind covers for you.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

sous les paves, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

a month or so ago, someone asked when the Michael Mayer/Gui Boratto show will be.

it's just near the end of May. still a ways off, but it's happening. Kontrol DJs and Dirtybird dudes are also performing.

lucas pine, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 06:26 (nineteen years ago)

ooh, i'll be hitting up mezzanine for sure when i'm in SF next wk!!

impudent harlot, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 06:53 (nineteen years ago)

did anyone get that iconcertcal plugin for iTunes? Its free and cross-platform, and it analyzes your music library to create a calendar of upcoming shows in the area for you. no shit. it didn't find that gun club party for me, though. apparently the marshall tucker band is playing 3 separate dates in the bay area in the near future...where is mcnears mystic theater?

viborg, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 07:18 (nineteen years ago)

going to see the Zombies in Healdsburg - 3/14. i wonder what that will be like. i've never been to healdsburg, or 've seen old band play old material. intrigued. excited for M Mayer at Mezzanine.

as I was tellin Shasta, I am considering a trip to SF 5/31-6/4, ruffly. Don't let me end up by myself at the Arcade Fire show in Berkeley ($31, I dunno how likely that is).

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

lukas, Thursday, 17 November 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

Kimo's is rumored to be closing.

I saw the first bay area appearances of Black Dice, Wolf Eyes, Andrew WK, Lightning Bolt (the Power of Salad & Milkshakes footage shows me standing on a table here)... lots of good memories.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 17 November 2011 03:39 (fourteen years ago)

what I heard is that it's being sold, and the new owners don't plan to have live shows anymore.

sarahel, Thursday, 17 November 2011 03:40 (fourteen years ago)

how was harvey ? could not make it :( i have a strange masochist tendency in hearing the details about an awesome set i should have checked out.

wow, how has it been five months since that event.

hey bay area, my friends and I are doing a new wave/synth oddity/techno Halloween party at a nice art space in Berkeley. all local DJs, a few rooms, most likely a non-Burner crowd. cheap tix. come one, come all.

B-Boy Bualadh Bos (ecuador_with_a_c), Saturday, 6 October 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

eight years pass...

A friend of mine has started up a very informative substack showcasing San Francisco/Bay Area musicians and artists, record labels and events/releases. Lots of focus on new/underground up and coming artists but also looking back to some legends of old too. Not limited by genre or scene, though some of the early posts focus on a few labels and genres, everything is on the table if it's worth sharing. Latest post covers Oakland's Lower Grand Radio, Xyla, Lunchbox, and Santana among others.
