Sleep - "Jersulam"/"Dopesmoker" - C/D?

i already bought jerusalem so i ain't picking up dopesmoker unless'n i see it for cheap. but jerusalem's ok, i guess. holy mountain is way better - though i think the genius doesn't really kick in until the second half of the album - as is OM.

and as much as saying things are overrated is overrated, i tend to agree with roger about saint vitus these days. reagers period is best, though the wino era has some killer tunes here and there it's really in essence a compromise between the best of vitus and the best of the obsessed which makes a kind of boring muddle at times.

I would rather heat my liver with drinking.

the best thing sleep ever did was accompany those white trash kids prowling around their trailer park on their dirt bikes. their albums were tedious, meandering crap that were basically black sabbath remix records

I haven't heard Holy Mountain, but Dopesmoker/Jerusalem doesn't quite do it for me. I think Conference of Birds is my favorite thing from the whole Sleep/High on Fire/Om axis.

I guess, but these guys are a low-rent knockoff. It's not like it is with Beatles, how they paved the way for a much better and much more transcendent band with better music, lyrics, and singing quality-- Oasis.

Sleep's entire output is great.

I was a fan of Asbestos Death and Sleep Volume I. When Holy Mountain came out, I initially felt like it was a tasteless Sabbath rip-off.

Years later, I've come to realize that Sleep does a lot of things Sabbath never did. Sure there are some very obvious riffs/nods, but it's in tribute. There are all kinds of techniques and directions employed on Holy Mountain that Sabbath never would have touched.

Having said that, I think the first High on Fire record is the best thing any of these guys has ever done.

2+ hour set at ATP was like whoa.

Yeah I got momentarily excited by a new OLD recording popping up and it was a collection of library jazz, but poorly edited minute long tracks.

So new single, big tour, new comic book, but... no Matt Pike. Really hard to imagine Sleep without him.

Funny thing is I was served up a full-length Om album on Spotify just the other day which turned out to be A.I. slop, nothing to do with the band.
