They were doing it when I saw Phish back in '89, so I'm guessing yes.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
Ween songs I like = Spirit of 76, Push Th Lil DaisiesPrimus songs I like = Fisticuffs
Never liked anything Ive heard from Phish. They did a passable cover of 'Gold Sound' though
― Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)
I've also never heard a Thin Lizzy record despite tons of seeming to love them and telling me I need to. I guess based on the three songs I have heard I don't get what differentiates them from hordes of other 70s classic rock staples - not this is bad, just nothing I've sought out.
Ween live in 1997 was one my favorite shows ever; the first Phish show I saw was at a small theater in 93 and was great but the next three were in progressively bigger venues and got worse every time, partly due to being surrounded by more and more Phish fans.
That said if they happened to play near me this past summer I totally would have gone, fuck the haters.
― joygoat, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
phuck the haters, you mean
― some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:47 (thirteen years ago)
I don't get what differentiates them from hordes of other 70s classic rock staples
there are at least a handful of really obvious surface-level things
― Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)
If any of these bands resemble the Zappaesque dilemma of amazing musicianship vs. shut the hell up, it's probably Primus, isn't it?
― frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
yeah pretty much. "i woodshedded for 8 years straight to play this passage, now listen to me recite a dirty limerick over it"
― some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)
les claypool and trey ananstasio had that weird band for a minute
― billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)
That was Oysterhead, with Stewart Copeland! I liked that disc quite a bit, mostly because you get to hear Copeland playing in a rock band again.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:58 (thirteen years ago)
can you imagine how lopsided this poll would be if it was The Police instead of Ween. if it was The Police AND Ween, however, i don't trust you bastards not to do the unthinkable.
― some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:59 (thirteen years ago)
I realize that they are an Irish band fronted by a black guy which makes them obviously different from, say, Skynrd, but musically what am I missing that makes Jailbreak or The Boys Are Back In Town that much different from all the Seger / BTO / BOC / REO / Aerosmith / Eagles stuff that I heard on the same stations growing up? Enough that a number of different people have passionately talked to me about them being great, people who wouldn't do the same for any of the other bands I listed?
This has inspired me to finally listen to a Thin Lizzy record - which one?
― joygoat, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:06 (thirteen years ago)
Jailbreak
― frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)
touch of Van Morrison from this early cut.

― Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)
There is nothing wrong with starting with Jailbreak. I honestly haven't heard any BTO or REO albums, but would listen if there was a good one with great deep cuts. Thin Lizzy isn't as inscrutable as BOC. Not as blooooooz as Aerosmith, but way bluesier than the Eagles. Good songwriting. Closest comparison I could think of would be Bruce Springsteen if he wasn't so damn "hey everybody look at me!"

i am bummed beyond belief at all the bands Lizzy's being lumped in with
the fucking EAGLES? Reo Speedwagon?
flaming acres of firey pubes itt
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)
Listen to all of them from Nightlife to Black Rose, including Live And Dangerous. And as HOTS said these comparisons don't do them justice.
― EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)
Those comparisons make sense if you've only heard the singles. All the TL albums I've heard have been pretty enjoyable and I think most people are surprised by how good they turned out to be.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:23 (thirteen years ago)
can we make this a Thin Lizzy poll instead?
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)
thin lizzy's great but christ they were a '70s rock staple and fit right in. a good one, with some Van Morrisony flourishes, but going "argh how you can you compare them to bob seger"?

EZ and I had a fun evening of schooling each other in the Outloud room a few months ago -- he played Thin Lizzy for me and I played Zappa for him.

flaming acres of firey pubes had a couple good albums produced by zappa before they went full-on country rock iirc
― some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)
xxpost da croupier I didn't say Bob Seger. I get that. I said Eagles/Speedwagon.

Live and Dangerous is the one TL I've got. it's great.
― Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:40 (thirteen years ago)
i'm not sure how thin lizzy entered this thread but i enjoy ween's TL tributehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFbTbSsb6f0

thing is, that's a pretty varied bunch of bands. sure, thin lizzy were heavy 70s rockers, so they fit in pretty comfortably with others of that general ilk, but that isn't a good or bad thing in itself. they've got their own distinct personality and points of appeal (fine musicianship, memorable tunes, evocative lyrics and vocals). same goes for BOC and aerosmith, afaic, though you can have the rest.
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 22:03 (thirteen years ago)
first place i'd start with Thin Lizzy is Live at the High Voltage Festival 2011
― Elrond Hubbard (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 22:10 (thirteen years ago)
but yeah on the real Lizzy is very unique because they were so multi-faceted and blessed with Lynott's voice, how many bands can recall Van Morrison or Springsteen at points and sound like proto-Iron Maiden at points? they straddle the line between metal and hard rock and just rock 'n roll and soul in a unique way....like for example, i'm listening to Live and Dangerous and they just went from a totally swinging stroll through the basically soul song "Dancing the Moonlight" with and extended sax solo from some dude in Graham fucking Parkers' band of all things, then the nexts thing is Massacre which sounds like the roots of NWOBHM
― Elrond Hubbard (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 22:27 (thirteen years ago)
damn, that sounds almost as good as Ween

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

too many phish votes imo
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 9 August 2012 00:06 (thirteen years ago)
anyway can I just say that, as a Ween fan who is intimately familiar with the oeuvre of Thin Lizzy...

this is a silly thread.

And for the other 7 of you who voted Phish, don't forget to mosey on over to live phish where they've been giving away these "Live Bait" samplers of great performances from past tours. Because they've been selectively assembled, you aren't stuck worry about whether a show is going to be consistently good or whether Trey smoked crack before the second set.

congrats to Tenacious D on winning the poll
― some dude, Friday, 10 August 2012 10:43 (thirteen years ago)
wow. I can't listen to this stuff. I think last year when I had that phish-revival, well maybe that was a "once-a-decade" kinda thing. yeee-ouch.
