I am voting for Ween because Primus are fine but they're only fun when you're in the right mood and sometimes they just straight annoy the fuck out of me, and Phish just needs to go away ugh ugh ugh.

FYI frogbs yr defense of ween is noted, and like, yay ween I'm totally with you but MAY THE GHOST OF PHIL LYNOTT SET YOUR PUBES ON FIRE FOR BESMIRCHING THIN LIZZY'S AWESOMENESS

ween really are masters of other people's styles, though. that sounds like a backhanded compliment, but it's a pretty remarkable skill. "gabrielle" may not beat thin lizzy at their own game, but it's both a dead ringer and a good song in its own right. same goes for "it's gonna be a long night", their motorhead pastiche.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

my iinitial exposure to phish really was a dude in college playing me a 40 minute version of "bouncing round the room" that he had taped live at the college music venue and i was just not able to get high enough to manage it so i never volunteered again.

almost feel like this is a trap 2 out phish setlist nerd types (hey, college rite?) but 'bouncing' is not really a song they jam out on (often? ever? idk)

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

glad we cleared that up

Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

The whole statement means something different.

my bad, i'm not real good at parsing run-on sentences like that

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

I voted Ween. I think they write the best songs. I have never heard a Thin Lizzy record. I am probably not that familiar with lots of stuff they use for their inspirations (appropriations?). This was especially true when I was a teenager. At first blush, most Ween fans probably weren't intimately familiar with Thin Lizzy and their ilk.

After reading the thread I kind of wish I voted for Phish though.

This, plus they didn't really do many songs for 40 minutes. I was there for the hour-long Runaway Jim they did at Worcester 97 though.

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

Probably some Tweezers. Maybe a YEM?

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:30 (thirteen years ago)

In my experience YEM gets a jam at the end, but its mostly a pretty tightly constructed song that doesn't go on too long? Maybe 15-20 minutes? I dunno, I am not an expert.

But they did do an almost 40 minute cover of Ween's Roses are Free. I don't recall it being all that good, but it seems appropriate to the thread. I don't think they've ever covered Primus, but I know Trey and Les played together in Oysterhead.

brontosaur, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)

a tightly controlled 20 minute song

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

@ Shakey Mo, this song is rigidly composed until they let it all hang out about 15 minutes in.

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

well it sure felt like 40 minutes

Just talking about Phish feels like time is slowed down exponentially

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

Not particularly a fan of any of them, but both Ween and Primus were way more fun live than I expected them to be. (Ween was years back, late '90s. Primus was just last year.)

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

were you expecting a grim, po-faced Primus show...?

"Jesus Just Left Chicago" (Beard, Gibbons, Hill) - 9:18

I shudder to think what kind of torture are they doing to a basically perfect 3 and a half minute rock song

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

i tried to listen to this phish show one time and they started with a SEVENTEEN minute cover of "emotional rescue" by the stones and it started out with like 4 minutes of them tunelessly going "whooo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoooo" and i almost killed myself

Elrond Hubbard (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

i like more ween songs than primus songs, but when you're not in the mood for puerile shit ween is 100% sadsauce while primus at their best can be like 'no you WANT to hear some puerile shit *bass biddle*' and I'm like 'ok fine one song'

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

most Ween after 1994 isn't really puerile at all!

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

whatever

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

i respect Phish's taste in covers (especially when they did a whole Little Feat album!) but i think that respect would pretty quickly dissipate if i actually listened to those covers. although i've experienced no particular revulsion at what little original material i've heard.

some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

most ween after 1994 also isnt very good at all

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

More afraid I'd be bored silly. But it was a good time.

all their best albums came after C&C, if you guys seriously stopped listening then I can see why you dislike them so much

it's called methfoot

Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

They were doing it when I saw Phish back in '89, so I'm guessing yes.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

Ween songs I like = Spirit of 76, Push Th Lil Daisies
Primus songs I like = Fisticuffs

Never liked anything Ive heard from Phish. They did a passable cover of 'Gold Sound' though

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

I've also never heard a Thin Lizzy record despite tons of seeming to love them and telling me I need to. I guess based on the three songs I have heard I don't get what differentiates them from hordes of other 70s classic rock staples - not this is bad, just nothing I've sought out.

Ween live in 1997 was one my favorite shows ever; the first Phish show I saw was at a small theater in 93 and was great but the next three were in progressively bigger venues and got worse every time, partly due to being surrounded by more and more Phish fans.

That said if they happened to play near me this past summer I totally would have gone, fuck the haters.

joygoat, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

phuck the haters, you mean

some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:47 (thirteen years ago)

I don't get what differentiates them from hordes of other 70s classic rock staples

there are at least a handful of really obvious surface-level things

Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

If any of these bands resemble the Zappaesque dilemma of amazing musicianship vs. shut the hell up, it's probably Primus, isn't it?

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

yeah pretty much. "i woodshedded for 8 years straight to play this passage, now listen to me recite a dirty limerick over it"

some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

les claypool and trey ananstasio had that weird band for a minute

billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

That was Oysterhead, with Stewart Copeland! I liked that disc quite a bit, mostly because you get to hear Copeland playing in a rock band again.

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

can you imagine how lopsided this poll would be if it was The Police instead of Ween. if it was The Police AND Ween, however, i don't trust you bastards not to do the unthinkable.

some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

there are at least a handful of really obvious surface-level things

I realize that they are an Irish band fronted by a black guy which makes them obviously different from, say, Skynrd, but musically what am I missing that makes Jailbreak or The Boys Are Back In Town that much different from all the Seger / BTO / BOC / REO / Aerosmith / Eagles stuff that I heard on the same stations growing up? Enough that a number of different people have passionately talked to me about them being great, people who wouldn't do the same for any of the other bands I listed?

This has inspired me to finally listen to a Thin Lizzy record - which one?

joygoat, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

Jailbreak

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

touch of Van Morrison from this early cut.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2nuqdnbxYs

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

There is nothing wrong with starting with Jailbreak. I honestly haven't heard any BTO or REO albums, but would listen if there was a good one with great deep cuts. Thin Lizzy isn't as inscrutable as BOC. Not as blooooooz as Aerosmith, but way bluesier than the Eagles. Good songwriting. Closest comparison I could think of would be Bruce Springsteen if he wasn't so damn "hey everybody look at me!"
