Ween vs. Primus vs. Phish

I think it's cause you secretly realize they are better than thin lizzy and that fact kills you inside xp

I own one album apiece by Thin Lizzy and Ween and they are both good, but Ween does not "do" Thin Lizzy better than Thin Lizzy.

I am voting for Ween because Primus are fine but they're only fun when you're in the right mood and sometimes they just straight annoy the fuck out of me, and Phish just needs to go away ugh ugh ugh.

ween really are masters of other people's styles, though. that sounds like a backhanded compliment, but it's a pretty remarkable skill. "gabrielle" may not beat thin lizzy at their own game, but it's both a dead ringer and a good song in its own right. same goes for "it's gonna be a long night", their motorhead pastiche.

my iinitial exposure to phish really was a dude in college playing me a 40 minute version of "bouncing round the room" that he had taped live at the college music venue and i was just not able to get high enough to manage it so i never volunteered again.

I voted Ween. I think they write the best songs. I have never heard a Thin Lizzy record. I am probably not that familiar with lots of stuff they use for their inspirations (appropriations?). This was especially true when I was a teenager. At first blush, most Ween fans probably weren't intimately familiar with Thin Lizzy and their ilk.

After reading the thread I kind of wish I voted for Phish though.

This, plus they didn't really do many songs for 40 minutes. I was there for the hour-long Runaway Jim they did at Worcester 97 though.

In my experience YEM gets a jam at the end, but its mostly a pretty tightly constructed song that doesn't go on too long? Maybe 15-20 minutes? I dunno, I am not an expert.

But they did do an almost 40 minute cover of Ween's Roses are Free. I don't recall it being all that good, but it seems appropriate to the thread. I don't think they've ever covered Primus, but I know Trey and Les played together in Oysterhead.

Not particularly a fan of any of them, but both Ween and Primus were way more fun live than I expected them to be. (Ween was years back, late '90s. Primus was just last year.)

i tried to listen to this phish show one time and they started with a SEVENTEEN minute cover of "emotional rescue" by the stones and it started out with like 4 minutes of them tunelessly going "whooo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoooo" and i almost killed myself

i like more ween songs than primus songs, but when you're not in the mood for puerile shit ween is 100% sadsauce while primus at their best can be like 'no you WANT to hear some puerile shit *bass biddle*' and I'm like 'ok fine one song'

i respect Phish's taste in covers (especially when they did a whole Little Feat album!) but i think that respect would pretty quickly dissipate if i actually listened to those covers. although i've experienced no particular revulsion at what little original material i've heard.

Never liked anything Ive heard from Phish. They did a passable cover of 'Gold Sound' though

I've also never heard a Thin Lizzy record despite tons of seeming to love them and telling me I need to. I guess based on the three songs I have heard I don't get what differentiates them from hordes of other 70s classic rock staples - not this is bad, just nothing I've sought out.

Ween live in 1997 was one my favorite shows ever; the first Phish show I saw was at a small theater in 93 and was great but the next three were in progressively bigger venues and got worse every time, partly due to being surrounded by more and more Phish fans.

That said if they happened to play near me this past summer I totally would have gone, fuck the haters.

That was Oysterhead, with Stewart Copeland! I liked that disc quite a bit, mostly because you get to hear Copeland playing in a rock band again.
