well tbf if i saw a dude flip from clawhammer fingerstyle to death metal shred riffs i would be impressed. it does take a certain kind of musical talent to pull that stuff off. xposts

yeah i am down w/the first 3 primus albums but it goes a little poorly from there. and the first 5 ween albums. my iinitial exposure to phish really was a dude in college playing me a 40 minute version of "bouncing round the room" that he had taped live at the college music venue and i was just not able to get high enough to manage it so i never volunteered again.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

ween has a sense of craft and melody that the other two lack. i find it hard to imagine either of those two bands making an album as tight and satisfying as the mollusk (or white pepper.)

also, from my experience, ween fans are exactly the kinds of dudes who unabashedly love the 70s prog that the mollusk and quebec imitated.

buh, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

don't even get why ween would be appealing if you weren't pretty well versed in a lot of old music

― iatee, Wednesday, August 8, 2012 4:09 PM (11 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

When I listened to Ween, I was way under-versed in their source material. As a teen in the 90s, I didn't know a thing about glam but I still rocked out to Captain Fantasy. I didn't get the joke either, actually. Thought they were just "wacky" guys who wrote good riffs.

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

you can't talk that bullshit about thin lizzy and still expect anyone to respect whatever else you have to say on the subject

this isn't my opinion. this is like, every Ween fan I've ever met.

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

Enough reason to dismiss Ween right there.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

why?

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

because they are loved by those who would be culled

contenderizer, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

that's perfectly OK, imo. it's a great song, and you don't need to be versed in its reference points to get that. true of a lot of ween's best shit, imo.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

doesn't change the fact that implying that Ween fans have no idea about 70's music is moronic as hell

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

i was being charitable. if they know that stuff and would still rather listen to Ween, that's a bigger problem.

some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

Doesn't change the fact that Ween fans are too besotted to understand Thin Lizzy shit on them from a great height.

― some dude, Wednesday, August 8, 2012 9:53 AM (44 seconds ago)

aw, its just some ween. you don't have to get all bill magill about it.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

lol at the idea that listening to ween and thin lizzy are mutually exclusive experiences. they're both great bands!

buh, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:00 (thirteen years ago)

exactly, they're both good, I just think statements like this are just dumb on their face

if they know that stuff and would still rather listen to Ween, that's a bigger problem.

as though all Ween does is produce second-rate imitations of bands greater than themselves.

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:07 (thirteen years ago)

thinking they're better at Lizzy than Lizzy is what you said, and what people have a problem with.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:11 (thirteen years ago)

frogbs making me sad I voted for Ween

Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

That's obviously a bit of hyperbole but when I hear "Gabrielle" I can't help thinking that, I play it more than any individual song by Lizzy, no need for people to get butthurt over that

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

also lol @ EZ's suggestion that Ween fans just don't "get" Thin Lizzy, get the hell out with that moronic shit

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

If you originally voted sometime before the poll closing reminder last night, you should be able to vote again, at least balancing things out in favor of one of the other bands. Such are the holes in the ilx poll function.

xxp

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

nah the other two bands are horrible

Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

frogbs making me sad I voted for Ween

then you should probably delete your ilx account and create a new one, vote for a different band, then immediately delete your new account

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

Never said they don't "get" Thin Lizzy. Said the love of Ween fucks up their view of Lizzy's greatness in comparison.

Only moronic shit here is you saying Ween does Lizzy better than Lizzy did.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:22 (thirteen years ago)

lol i love when i can totally ruin what was a shitty thread to begin with

some dude, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

well done!

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

Though why I care to argue about Ween is beyond me. That kind of day I guess.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

Doesn't change the fact that Ween fans are too besotted to understand Thin Lizzy

either way, I doubt I'd like Thin Lizzy more if I hadn't heard of Ween, that's kind of an odd thing to say

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's cause you secretly realize they are better than thin lizzy and that fact kills you inside xp

iatee, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:25 (thirteen years ago)

I own one album apiece by Thin Lizzy and Ween and they are both good, but Ween does not "do" Thin Lizzy better than Thin Lizzy.

Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

that's like saying the Dukes of Stratosphear are better than the Beatles

Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:28 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that was a pretty stupid thing to say tbf

buh, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:28 (thirteen years ago)

nice truncation to change what I wrote:

Doesn't change the fact that Ween fans are too besotted to understand Thin Lizzy shit on them from a great height.

The whole statement means something different.

Done arguing with someone who can't read.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

everyone knows the dukes of stratopshear are better than the beatles

iatee, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

lol

Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

I am voting for Ween because Primus are fine but they're only fun when you're in the right mood and sometimes they just straight annoy the fuck out of me, and Phish just needs to go away ugh ugh ugh.

FYI frogbs yr defense of ween is noted, and like, yay ween I'm totally with you but MAY THE GHOST OF PHIL LYNOTT SET YOUR PUBES ON FIRE FOR BESMIRCHING THIN LIZZY'S AWESOMENESS

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:32 (thirteen years ago)

ween really are masters of other people's styles, though. that sounds like a backhanded compliment, but it's a pretty remarkable skill. "gabrielle" may not beat thin lizzy at their own game, but it's both a dead ringer and a good song in its own right. same goes for "it's gonna be a long night", their motorhead pastiche.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

almost feel like this is a trap 2 out phish setlist nerd types (hey, college rite?) but 'bouncing' is not really a song they jam out on (often? ever? idk)

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

glad we cleared that up

Harvey Cartel (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

The whole statement means something different.

my bad, i'm not real good at parsing run-on sentences like that

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

I voted Ween. I think they write the best songs. I have never heard a Thin Lizzy record. I am probably not that familiar with lots of stuff they use for their inspirations (appropriations?). This was especially true when I was a teenager. At first blush, most Ween fans probably weren't intimately familiar with Thin Lizzy and their ilk.

After reading the thread I kind of wish I voted for Phish though.

This, plus they didn't really do many songs for 40 minutes. I was there for the hour-long Runaway Jim they did at Worcester 97 though.

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

Probably some Tweezers. Maybe a YEM?

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:30 (thirteen years ago)

In my experience YEM gets a jam at the end, but its mostly a pretty tightly constructed song that doesn't go on too long? Maybe 15-20 minutes? I dunno, I am not an expert.

But they did do an almost 40 minute cover of Ween's Roses are Free. I don't recall it being all that good, but it seems appropriate to the thread. I don't think they've ever covered Primus, but I know Trey and Les played together in Oysterhead.

brontosaur, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)

a tightly controlled 20 minute song

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

@ Shakey Mo, this song is rigidly composed until they let it all hang out about 15 minutes in.

spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

well it sure felt like 40 minutes

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 19:23 (thirteen years ago)

i would not enjoy you enjoy myself

MUBU gai pan (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

Just talking about Phish feels like time is slowed down exponentially

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

Not particularly a fan of any of them, but both Ween and Primus were way more fun live than I expected them to be. (Ween was years back, late '90s. Primus was just last year.)
