umm it was paul who said i never heard it not me

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 02:58 (thirteen years ago)

Well, okay. If you know it, then fine. But you got to pinky swear that you'll listen to everything you veto.

emil.y, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:00 (thirteen years ago)

i mean it's his list and i respect that he's trying to police the boundaries of something he defines, so it's all good. like i said, wouldn't have even nommed Pretenders if they hadn't been nommed already.

some random MC rappin' mcdude (some dude), Friday, 3 August 2012 03:00 (thirteen years ago)

If this doesn't count as rock, then what the hell does?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YA3hZEDPNI

I ain't mad anymore, but this whole process is going to result in short outbursts of complete genuine shock and disdain.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:03 (thirteen years ago)

name me a poll or list that doesn't!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:04 (thirteen years ago)

See, I think that would totally count as 'rocking'. Not 'good', but 'rocking', yeah. I guess nom it in the tracks poll? I think AG is a little more hands-off, if not totally so, in that one.

emil.y, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)

yeah

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:07 (thirteen years ago)

Can we keep the youtube embeds to a minimum though please in both threads. Just use the shortened links

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

Ones where the host of the poll doesn't just arbitrarily disqualify things on a whim. Usually there are facts to back it up (like year or decade of release or whether or not it was a single or who sang a song). Here, just like the metal poll, the jazz poll, etc it's left up to totally shady discretion.

But whatevs.

My polls generally don't have this kind of bickering, btw. Why? Because I don't set them up with bizarro subjective parameters.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

i would be fine w/ just nomming, say, "The Wait" or "Mystery Achievement" in the tracks poll to represent The Pretenders if not the album. i mean the tracks poll SHOULD be about highlighting hard rocking tracks whether or not the whole album or band's career rocks that hard.

some random MC rappin' mcdude (some dude), Friday, 3 August 2012 03:10 (thirteen years ago)

My polls generally don't have this kind of bickering, btw. Why? Because I don't set them up with bizarro subjective parameters.

No, it would be silly for you to argue with yourself or troll your own poll.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:11 (thirteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGZeuf-6cJ0

That album rocked harder than any UK 80's crap. :)

svend, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:11 (thirteen years ago)

i mean the tracks poll SHOULD be about highlighting hard rocking tracks whether or not the whole album or band's career rocks that hard.

correct

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:12 (thirteen years ago)

johnny i kinda don't know why you're bothering, because even stepping into this thread you're pretty much agreeing to enter a house of someone else's design. we've done anything-goes '80s polls before, we know how all these records are regarded, AG is trying to do something different, either you're on board or you're not (i'm kind of on the fence but i figured i'll at least nom some stuff and attempt to vote).

some random MC rappin' mcdude (some dude), Friday, 3 August 2012 03:12 (thirteen years ago)

Guys everyones entitled to nominate and vote. If its not eligible then i say so. I still hope people continue to nominate and vote and enjoy the results. This isn't meant to be an 80s poll or a Rolling Stone with a token rap pick poll.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:14 (thirteen years ago)

that last bit is copyrighted by Nakh btw

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:14 (thirteen years ago)

johnny i kinda don't know why you're bothering

I don't either. I guess AG just pushes my buttons with an enticing topic and then whittles it down in ways that make me, specifically, unhappy. Ours is a toxic relationship.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:16 (thirteen years ago)

Im sure there will be plenty you can vote for

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:16 (thirteen years ago)

plus paul is used to running polls so its hard for him when someone else does polls on topics he likes. Everyone has their own ways and ideas.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:17 (thirteen years ago)

Here, just like the metal poll, the jazz poll, etc it's left up to totally shady discretion.

See, I sort of agree with you that things are a bit too arbitrary here, but the metal poll and the jazz poll were two of my very favourite polls of all time (along with the '50s poll and a couple of others).

emil.y, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:19 (thirteen years ago)

I guess we just view the nominations process for polling as oppositely as possible. I'm 110% for inclusion, even working around obstacles to get people's nominations in, and you're all about exclusion at your own discretion. I guess it's good to be the king.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:19 (thirteen years ago)

And also, as I say, seeing as AG roped me into this, I'm gonna try to keep the tracks poll a little less arbitrary than the albums one. So go there, be free and rocking!

emil.y, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

thx :D

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:23 (thirteen years ago)

I'm 110% for inclusion, even working around obstacles to get people's nominations in

yeah limiting nominations per person is really inclusive!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:25 (thirteen years ago)

croup already nommed "precious" in the tracks poll anyway, like yesterday

contenderizer, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:26 (thirteen years ago)

― Johnny Fever, Thursday, August 2, 2012 11:19 PM (3 minutes ago) Bookmark

right. but i dunno, pretty much any album being knocked out of contention gets plenty of love in most other lists of '80s rock albums, so if AG wants to whittle them away to distinguish this version of the canon then w/e who cares.

some random MC rappin' mcdude (some dude), Friday, 3 August 2012 03:28 (thirteen years ago)

Oh come on, AG, that's totally different. That's about limiting by numerical value, not by subjective value. I do have issues with limiting numerically, because I use noms as a reminder list, so I like to have everything there, but it is a completely non-comparable limit. And I'm on your side, here, I've agreed to do the poll with you, let's not get into bitching, come on.

xxpost

emil.y, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:28 (thirteen years ago)

Also, some dude is pretty much right on in the 'who cares' stakes - this poll was started in the full knowledge that there would be controversial choices made, so you either have to go with it or not. I'm gonna disagree on some of the AG choices here, but because it's such a loose thing then, well, you got to take a chance...

emil.y, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:30 (thirteen years ago)

emil.y- paul and i do this every poll. Dont spoil our fun!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:33 (thirteen years ago)

everything ,usually, turns out ok in the end.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:33 (thirteen years ago)

You might think it's fun, AG. I don't. It riles me. Twists my guts. This is my fault, of course, because who in their right mind should care too much about stupid music forum polls? I need to go clean my kitchen or something else productive.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

i guess the question is this: is the nominations process more useful and appealing to ILM as a measure of what ILM thinks rocks, or of what AG thinks rocks?

i'd guess the former, but it's AG's show, so he makes the rules. tbh, i'm happy to have a poll that won't be completely dominated by ILM's rock-challenged usual suspects.

contenderizer, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:39 (thirteen years ago)

It just needs to be a bit different to other polls. And it's better than banning every band who was in the 80s poll from it.

If theres way more death and thrash metal in the results than pop metal i expect mr fever to be angry ;)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:41 (thirteen years ago)

to be fair, a poll of music ILM thinks "rocks" with absolutely no editorial control would have some laughably un-rocking shit on it, so i'm ok with someone trying to steer the ship even if their judgment doesn't line up 100% with mine (and so far it lines up with mine way more than it does with Johnny's or some other people itt).

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:45 (thirteen years ago)

Look, I'm not suggesting anyone consider Wham! or Til Tuesday a rockin' band. But I think with things like the first Pretenders album or Licensed to Ill or maybe a few other things, a strong case could be made that they should be included.

It's AG's show, though. His fifteen minutes in the ILM spotlight. The rollout will be full of his cheerleading and commentary (and slams), and again the whole process will be ME ME ME instead of MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:48 (thirteen years ago)

It's impossible to please everyone with polls. Whatever you do there's going to be complaints. Mistakes will be made, something wont be nominated that should have, someone who has a fave album but didnt bother nominating will bitch and moan about it's exclusion. The polls already been called lol rockist.

But it is what it is and will turn out just fine as long as people aren't dicks and a clusterfuck ensues.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:49 (thirteen years ago)

By ME ME ME do you mean YOU YOU YOU?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:50 (thirteen years ago)

clearly this is the one thread where we can be rockists without prejudice

some random MC rappin' mcdude (some dude), Friday, 3 August 2012 03:51 (thirteen years ago)

Because every damn poll I've ever ran has been about highlighting music. My polls are never about just having the same old polls or just about what's in the top 20. The music in the lower reaches is equally as important as the music at the top. If some sad sacks are only interested in popular music the top 20 results then that's their loss.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:52 (thirteen years ago)

lol

Quick mini-poll:

Who can name all the write-in polls I've run? Now, who can name all the write-in polls AG has run?

I try to stay as anonymous as possible when it's time to roll out results.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:53 (thirteen years ago)

i bet everyone remembers you in the polls ive ran

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:55 (thirteen years ago)

jf i love you man but let it go

some random MC rappin' mcdude (some dude), Friday, 3 August 2012 03:56 (thirteen years ago)

D.R.I. - Dealing With It

contenderizer, Friday, 3 August 2012 04:17 (thirteen years ago)

aw shit, missed that it had been nommed, sorry (like the third time i've done that)

contenderizer, Friday, 3 August 2012 04:18 (thirteen years ago)

I had nominated two albums by Crass that do not show up in the most recent master list:
Penis Envy and Yes Sir I Will

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 3 August 2012 04:18 (thirteen years ago)

Hee hee I voted for Pretenders II...the album that was *cough* (literally) snuck past the "goalie"

:D

JF if it really bothers you that much, don't participate. There's a lot of good polls coming down the pipeline.

Honestly I'm only participating to see if I can get any of my "popular shite" in the top 20
