i would be fine w/ just nomming, say, "The Wait" or "Mystery Achievement" in the tracks poll to represent The Pretenders if not the album. i mean the tracks poll SHOULD be about highlighting hard rocking tracks whether or not the whole album or band's career rocks that hard.

johnny i kinda don't know why you're bothering, because even stepping into this thread you're pretty much agreeing to enter a house of someone else's design. we've done anything-goes '80s polls before, we know how all these records are regarded, AG is trying to do something different, either you're on board or you're not (i'm kind of on the fence but i figured i'll at least nom some stuff and attempt to vote).

See, I sort of agree with you that things are a bit too arbitrary here, but the metal poll and the jazz poll were two of my very favourite polls of all time (along with the '50s poll and a couple of others).

right. but i dunno, pretty much any album being knocked out of contention gets plenty of love in most other lists of '80s rock albums, so if AG wants to whittle them away to distinguish this version of the canon then w/e who cares.

Oh come on, AG, that's totally different. That's about limiting by numerical value, not by subjective value. I do have issues with limiting numerically, because I use noms as a reminder list, so I like to have everything there, but it is a completely non-comparable limit. And I'm on your side, here, I've agreed to do the poll with you, let's not get into bitching, come on.

Also, some dude is pretty much right on in the 'who cares' stakes - this poll was started in the full knowledge that there would be controversial choices made, so you either have to go with it or not. i guess the question is this: is the nominations process more useful and appealing to ILM as a measure of what ILM thinks rocks, or of what AG thinks rocks?

i'd guess the former, but it's AG's show, so he makes the rules. tbh, i'm happy to have a poll that won't be completely dominated by ILM's rock-challenged usual suspects.

It just needs to be a bit different to other polls. And it's better than banning every band who was in the 80s poll from it.

If theres way more death and thrash metal in the results than pop metal i expect mr fever to be angry ;)

to be fair, a poll of music ILM thinks "rocks" with absolutely no editorial control would have some laughably un-rocking shit on it, so i'm ok with someone trying to steer the ship even if their judgment doesn't line up 100% with mine (and so far it lines up with mine way more than it does with Johnny's or some other people itt).

Look, I'm not suggesting anyone consider Wham! or Til Tuesday a rockin' band. But I think with things like the first Pretenders album or Licensed to Ill or maybe a few other things, a strong case could be made that they should be included.

It's AG's show, though. His fifteen minutes in the ILM spotlight. The rollout will be full of his cheerleading and commentary (and slams), and again the whole process will be ME ME ME instead of MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC.

It's impossible to please everyone with polls. Whatever you do there's going to be complaints. Mistakes will be made, something wont be nominated that should have, someone who has a fave album but didnt bother nominating will bitch and moan about it's exclusion. The polls already been called lol rockist.

But it is what it is and will turn out just fine as long as people aren't dicks and a clusterfuck ensues.

Because every damn poll I've ever ran has been about highlighting music. My polls are never about just having the same old polls or just about what's in the top 20. The music in the lower reaches is equally as important as the music at the top. If some sad sacks are only interested in popular music the top 20 results then that's their loss.
