i'm not sure. i guess why not
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 August 2012 14:48 (thirteen years ago)
I voted for Y&T's Open Fire which is a live album
though if it got bounced I doubt it'd be for that reason alone, lol
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)
Can a live album not rock? Can a various artists comp not rock? SO MANY RULES.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)
SO MANY TROLLS
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)
I'm honestly not trolling. Trolls don't have any interest in the topic they troll. I'm interested in this. I just wonder what the justification is for disqualifying perfectly reasonable things (like v/a comps, soundtracks) on what amounts to a personal preference. Rock's not about rules.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:27 (thirteen years ago)
(Also, Beastie Boys, Run-DMC and Public Enemy are all three squarely positioned in the rock canon, but I won't go there with you over that.)
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:29 (thirteen years ago)
(I mean, if The Boss is disqualified, there's no way to convince you those three acts belong.)
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)
you do it every poll i run. its part of the poll tradition now. Along with you saying we fix the results..
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)
Stop, Kerr. I'm not trolling. And I've apologized for that accusation now a hundred times, and if you bring it up again it's going to start making YOU look bad.
My point is this...being more inclusive with nominations rather than exclusive makes these totally meaningless exercises more fun and less contentious. It's not like we're engaging in geoglobal politics here. It's a poll on a music forum.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:34 (thirteen years ago)
plus that's kerry on "no sleep" and "fight for your right"
KERRY
― contenderizer, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:39 (thirteen years ago)
^ trolling
I dunno, personally it's kinda fun to try to participate in a poll with pretty rigid rules. I mean my tastes are almost embarrassingly mainstream compared to the rest of you fuckers so if I can get a kick out of this, I think all you indie weirdos can too :)
Open your hearts, submit to the fascist poll
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)
my rule of thumb so far has been if you can dance to it chances are Kerr will throw it to the lions
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
lol these rules aren't rigid. You get rigid rules in a decade poll or a year poll or a label or artist poll. In a genre poll, the rules should be as loosey goosey as possible, and they are here for the most part...except when they aren't, for whatever arbitrary reason.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
then forget I said anything
*shrug*
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
Sorry. Am I being an a-hole? I'll shut up.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)
No it's cool. I should just pull my head in.
Just...there's plenty of polls in the sea, is all.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 2 August 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)
anyway I would like to vote for

i think we get the hint
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:56 (thirteen years ago)
this may be pushing it, but how about a comp. from ’93 comprised of tracks from the 80s? afaik, it’s actually the second RRR F/i comp, with a different track listing from the first, and the two complementary recs contain most if not all of F/i’s output.
if yes, then I’ll nom:
F/i - Out of Space & Out of Time
if no, then:
F/i - Why Not Now? Alan! and in any case I’ll also nom. these:
Band of Susans- Hope Against HopeBlind Idiot God - s/tCrash Course in Science - Signals from Pier 13Gore - Mean Man’s Dream
― Hellhouse, Friday, 3 August 2012 00:47 (thirteen years ago)
which should look like this:

the pretenders? really? i dont think so
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 02:37 (thirteen years ago)
i was going to ask about their eligibility before nominating but then i saw you put the Pretenders II nomination into the master list no questions asked
― some random MC rappin' mcdude (some dude), Friday, 3 August 2012 02:40 (thirteen years ago)
well i hadnt noticed! I should check the master list to see what else sneaked by me.thanks!
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 02:41 (thirteen years ago)
You've ever listened to that album, obvs.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 02:53 (thirteen years ago)
That would probably be in my top 20.
xp *never
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 02:54 (thirteen years ago)
I would say, AG, that in order to discount stuff, you have to at least listen to it. I have no inclination to ever listen to the Pretenders, but if I was the sole veto person, I would make it my job to hear stuff before ruling it out.
― emil.y, Friday, 3 August 2012 02:58 (thirteen years ago)
umm it was paul who said i never heard it not me
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 02:58 (thirteen years ago)
Well, okay. If you know it, then fine. But you got to pinky swear that you'll listen to everything you veto.
― emil.y, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:00 (thirteen years ago)
i mean it's his list and i respect that he's trying to police the boundaries of something he defines, so it's all good. like i said, wouldn't have even nommed Pretenders if they hadn't been nommed already.
― some random MC rappin' mcdude (some dude), Friday, 3 August 2012 03:00 (thirteen years ago)
If this doesn't count as rock, then what the hell does?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YA3hZEDPNI
I ain't mad anymore, but this whole process is going to result in short outbursts of complete genuine shock and disdain.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:03 (thirteen years ago)
name me a poll or list that doesn't!
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:04 (thirteen years ago)
See, I think that would totally count as 'rocking'. Not 'good', but 'rocking', yeah. I guess nom it in the tracks poll? I think AG is a little more hands-off, if not totally so, in that one.
― emil.y, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)
yeah
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:07 (thirteen years ago)
Can we keep the youtube embeds to a minimum though please in both threads. Just use the shortened links
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)
Ones where the host of the poll doesn't just arbitrarily disqualify things on a whim. Usually there are facts to back it up (like year or decade of release or whether or not it was a single or who sang a song). Here, just like the metal poll, the jazz poll, etc it's left up to totally shady discretion.
But whatevs.
My polls generally don't have this kind of bickering, btw. Why? Because I don't set them up with bizarro subjective parameters.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)
i would be fine w/ just nomming, say, "The Wait" or "Mystery Achievement" in the tracks poll to represent The Pretenders if not the album. i mean the tracks poll SHOULD be about highlighting hard rocking tracks whether or not the whole album or band's career rocks that hard.
