That PIL album really counts? Is there even any guitar on it?
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 17:56 (thirteen years ago)
i dunno it
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 17:56 (thirteen years ago)
im relying on people pointing out these things. noone can know everything ever made!
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)
Lol, that PiL album is abrasive as hell...but yeah, I think it might be completely guitarless.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 18:00 (thirteen years ago)
does it ROCK!? as y'know industrial stuff can rock with no guitars. Abrasive is a good quality for the poll.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 18:03 (thirteen years ago)
It's totally abrasive. (I think there's some processed guitar noise in the background on some tracks.) And I nominated Naked City and Sonny Sharrock for a 'rock' poll so I won't be really hardcore about this. I just thought we were going for more of a heavy electric guitar aesthetic.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 18:08 (thirteen years ago)
I won't be really hardcore about this.
like about arguing this; obviously, it's not up to me.
(It doesn't rock in any sense in which I would use the term.)

― contenderizer, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)
Guys, things can definitely rock without guitars. However, I'm honestly not sure if AG is gonna let me have this next nomination...
Art Bears - The World As It Is Today
If not there are definitely a couple of tracks that can go on the singles poll.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 18:22 (thirteen years ago)
i often think that heaviness and rockingness are opposing forces held in complementary tension. like the extreme of rocking = thin, fast, syncopated, aggressive but relatively light-bodied shit like chuck berry and jerry lee lewis. not at all heavy. and the extreme of heaviness is crawling brutal sludge like early swans or boris, shit that has less sense of how to rock than "candle in the wind".
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)
It doesnt have to be heavy per se. this is not an exclusively metal poll. heavy noisy abrasive are all good descriptions. Intense rock is good. Though noone else might get what i mean (unless they look a t my noms)
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)
most people seem to get it with their nominations so far though
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)
i have no idea if art bears should count. Can anyone help me out here?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 19:47 (thirteen years ago)
It's cool that we're doing the 80s. The 80s had rock, but I don't think of it as a particularly ROCK decade. Even a lot of the glam metal I'll eventually get around to nominating is really just pop music with power chords.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)
I bet you thought I wouldnt allow it!
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)
Naw, I knew the time would come eventually.
The thing about the 80s is (even though there's a definite rock underground) the whole decade seems coated in affected and stagey sheen with very little "real" peeking through. I realize that's painting with a broad brush, but it's my overwhelming impression of the music made in those years. Not that that's a bad thing...I love a ton of 80s music. In fact, I probably love more music from the 80s than any other decade (except for maybe the 60s).
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)
i think that definitely feels true in relation to the 90s, when being "real" in an unaffected sense became a big priority in american pop culture. but i'm not sure that it really means much.
the disguise-wearing of 80s pop and rock (whether it be cartoonish mainstream stars like motley crue and cindy lauper, or equally exaggerated underground artists like the butthole surfers and jim foetus) allowed an authenticity of emotional and imaginative expression that the mask of ordinary, quotidian realness forbids.
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, August 1, 2012 11:41 AM (1 hour ago)
oh yeah, i know. i wasn't trying to police your poll, just thinking out loud about rock vs heavy.
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 20:24 (thirteen years ago)
lol Art Bears! They definitely rock. Allow it.
I mean this is pretty much mental metal without guitars:

can someone please link me to this indie poll that a few people have mentioned?
Need to find out when we can do the voting and results. I suppose a longer voting period may be no bad thing.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)
the indie pop/college rock poll will almost certainly need to be done next year though , when i had the idea for the 2 polls i didnt realise so many polls were in the queue. but im sure timellison can wait.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)
I think people talked about the prospect of a college rock poll, but it's yet to be organized.
