The main reason I posted the Flanagan is I'm pretty sure the singer is Farah of "Kiss Me There" fame.

I love those the owl bass on those two, Benny, those are much better examples. The part of 'You Want Me' I've had stuck in my head is that eerie UFO/ghost sound that comes in at the beginning of the track, before the bassline, that then becomes more high-pitched and bird-like around 2:23 in that youtube clip.
― Astrochimp32, Monday, 30 July 2012 16:43 (twelve years ago) link
owl bass? isn't this just like 1990 bass?
― the late great, Monday, 30 July 2012 18:36 (twelve years ago) link
oh god, please forget about this owl thing will you? It comes from an offhand comment i made on dissensus about 'Homeless' that Simon Reynolds then mentioned in his blog. Lets leave it at that...

really? thank you. i'm most of the proud of the "champion sound" bit at the beginning of the first blake baxter thing.
so am i deliberately misinterpreting aspects of the sound ... or rather am i ignoring (specifics of geography aside) that separates, say, standard bobbins and what rob might call predigested fact-ulum from the more vibrant funky and jackin scenes ... or would you just say i'm shoehorning everything into a frankendance sort of mush?
i'm really too old to follow developments in all continents and scenes but i wish i had kept up more w grime and funky now
― the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 22:39 (twelve years ago) link
i often get the same sense listening to some of this music as i do listening to herbert's "let's all make mistakes" and whatnot
― the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 22:55 (twelve years ago) link
Well I don't think your mix has anything to do with "jackin house" within the meaning of this thread, unsurprisingly!
The thing with funky is - or was - less for me about socio-geographical borders than a certain kind of overriding logic of groove that might not be apparent on a track by track basis. Pulling, say, Champion or (at the absolute opposite end of the funky spectrum) DJ MA1's remix of "I'm Leaving" into orbit with techno and tech-house and dubstep and etc. makes even those tracks feel very different.
This is probably at least in part a result of the fact that funky could perhaps have been described as a certain perspective on house rather than a full-fledged individual genre. I guess that precariousness is maybe why I have always tried to insist on distinctions from a critical perspective; funky didn't have the obvious distinctiveness of uk garage, whereby if you dropped a 2-step tune into a different genre mix it usually still sounded like... a 2-step tune.
(so 'predigested fact-ulum' is in some cases a certain light or framing that may be there or may not be - although then of course some tracks/artists adopt that vibe irrevocably).
Importantly though, cutting across genre lines doesn't always = frankendance, it depends on the strength of the through-line constructed (Let's All Make Mistakes is a paramount example of this).
An article I wrote recently for Audimat was basically me trying to set out a theoretical apparatus for the above but it's in French :-/
― Tim F, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:15 (twelve years ago) link
right, so they just sound like particularly choppy or spacey broken beat or house tracks? i think a lot of sounds the way early "space disco" stuff like 90s idjuts, paper recordings, etc just sounds like tech house in that context (blending in w/ stuff like DiY)
personally i also think that's an argument for their strength
― the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:18 (twelve years ago) link
i like the idea of fact music as a framing thing ... are FACT and BASS the same or different as superwords i wonder ;-)
― the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:19 (twelve years ago) link
i should not post so fast
it reminds me of how early "space disco" tracks (90s idjuts, paper recordings, etc) just sounded like tech house at that time (blending in w/ stuff like DiY)
― the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:22 (twelve years ago) link
makes even those tracks feel very different
what's interesting to me is that as a sheltered listener that's pretty much how those tracks "feel" to me, it doesn't sound like an incongruous transition or trick to me anymore than playing blake baxter with derrick may or eon with moodymann
― the late great, Saturday, 4 August 2012 23:26 (twelve years ago) link
yeah that's kinda my point!

no only the commercial rinse one which went over my head (ps you all said it was not so good?)
― the late great, Monday, 6 August 2012 22:35 (twelve years ago) link
Do you mean his 2010 Rinse CD? That's uk funky not jackin' house.
I thought it was very good but the absence of MCs means it's not as amazing as his best radio sets from 2008 - 2011 era.
Marcus now plays some jackin' house sets which is what r|t|c is referring to.

Would love to see a Jackin' Refix of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Kiss"
...also there was an amazing snippet of a Jamie Oliver track ("Doin' Time") floating around on a random club vid posted on Dissensus. Pretty sure it snatched its vocals from a Sublime song.
I'm starting to like this stuff almost as much as I did Funky back in the early days.
