n.b. I was there the day of the Haight St. Fair. (I did not know that the Haight St. Fair was going on until too late.) I did have some pretty delicious lemonade, so I can't condemn it totally. I think I must have been out of town for it the year I lived in the Haight.

i wonder if they went to jail for 2m in unpaid taxes or for hiring 70 undocumented workers, my guess is if they'd paid the taxes they'd be facing a lighter penalty
― the late great, Thursday, 26 July 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)
Working in a MN record store for many years meant having to hear lots of dudes tell me about Wookiefoot. "I guess their singer spends a lot of his time in Peru. A lot of their lyrics are based on his experiences there." (actually this mighta been the Big Wu.) Selling tickets for all those Harmony Park fests was the fuckin worst.
― alternative riff (CharlieS), Thursday, 26 July 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)
there is also moe. moe. the band with a period.

― goole, Thursday, 26 July 2012 20:47 (thirteen years ago)
You guys think Mpls is all "Husker Du! Prince! The Two Guys Who Did "Little Dog"! Replacements!" but really everyone is all "Wookiefoot! Big Wu!"
― chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 26 July 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)
I definitely think that third one a lot.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 July 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
Do The Two Guys Who Did "Little Dog" have crazy creatures on stilts though
― tylerw, Thursday, 26 July 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
I also assume everyone is actually from Brainerd but moved to Mpls for the big city allure.

This modern day jam band / Wookiefoot scene needs its very own Charles Manson figure to make it more interesting

― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:03 (thirteen years ago)
Sweet jesus. LOL i used to be in a band like this. A dozen members, all dressed in zany clothes, fire dancers & hula hoopers performing during songs. We sounded like orchestral anti-folk/indie rock.
Haven't listened to this tho, my laptop's audio is dead. Can anyone describe what it sounds like?
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:06 (thirteen years ago)
I think you just did.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:09 (thirteen years ago)
possibly, he was definitely a player in the rainbow family scene. i don't know if i remember Dress - not the long bearded ex-journalist dress-wearing old dude who lives around berkeley campus and was unofficial king of the campus garbage can drum circle? this was way back when, i was there 95-01.
Holy crap, I've seen this guy (or one of these guys) on television - he's one of the principals of the Oakland pot dispensary that was featured on Weed Wars which inadvertently became one of the greatest reality shows ever.

I had friend come back from Harvestfest one year and he was literally unable to stop smiling, turns out that the phrase "open air drug market" wasn't an exaggeration. He said he and his friends dumped coke, molly and speed into a bag and took rips out of it. Didn't sleep for 3 days.
Wookiefoot were playing that year.

Morbid curiosity, my enduring love of Johnny Cash and the total ridiculousness of this band are all battling my link-clicking finger right now.
― Ermahgerd Thomas (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 14:02 (thirteen years ago)
It's terrible but probably the least egregious of the videos posted thus far.
― global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 16:11 (thirteen years ago)
Feel like this wouldn't be entertaining at all if the name was not "Wookiefoot".
There's a band in Atlanta called Groove Stain, which is probably the worst name ever, even worse than Wookiefoot. Maybe they can get some ironic love too.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago)
This is def not ironic love from me, just bemused eyeroll. Like, I sorta get the entertainment value of this carnival/bacchanal with 20 people on stage, and snake-dancing women and giant puppets or whatever. But the music is so massively not my thing that I can't even assess it.
― Ermahgerd Thomas (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:25 (thirteen years ago)
omg Groove Stain is a seriously terrible, terrible band name.

the guy in this band who is somehow* in my facebook feed has painted his face again, which led me to this video. the person painting onstage is alex grey. the jew's harp player had a heart attack on stage this past april, but fortunately he has recovered.
*a bunch of my old friends are part of their circle and I mistook him for a different guy that I actually knew when he friend-requested me.

Welcome festi-family to another bliss weekend at Harmony Park. This is the most magical fairy forest in all the land !! The Harmony playground is on a lake with giant oak elders providing shade and shelter for the whole campground. This sacred site has been a place for the live music community to gather and befriend one another around campfires and under majestic stars. Shangri-la is our last summer shindig and we come to play with each other one last time before winter….. come play with us !!
The size of Harmony Park allows for individuals to share their magic and make a big impact on the whole…. It was here that Wookiefoot got its first oppurtunity to “Make Believe” with the crowd. The overwhelming joy created sparked a Nationwide tour bringing Fairys, Fire, Drumming, and Prankstering to festivals all over….now with our own event we can now pull off anything and everything imaginable. We’ve had as many as 300 performers…. from Fire rituals, Free healing arts center, Arial dancing, Native American traditional drumming and chanting, A marching band, Alice in wonderland tea party, Parades, Spiral dancing, Labrinth work shop, 3D black light painting station …..and …on…and….on. We are asking you to bring your magic and share your gifts with the family !! The vision of everyone bringing something of personal meaning and value to give to a brother from another mother or a sister from another mister is HIGH HIGH !! What’s your gift ?!??!?…Drumming, dancing, singing, food, message, bubbles, hugs, stones, crystals, jokes, jewelry, fairy wings, stickers, costumes…. whatchu got ?!?!
