Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children - Queen Latifah & De La Soul

Forgot about this - everything about it, the title, the video with its lurid superimposed colour scheme, the whole steez is early '90s encapsulated.

A Kim Deal two-fer of covers:

Pixies, "Head On"
Breeders, "Happiness is a Warm Gun"

LimbsKing, Thursday, 26 July 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)

oh whoops... the Pixies version was '91. Still a good song, though.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 26 July 2012 14:39 (thirteen years ago)

also love the noisy EP that Pavement put out that year.

The Cure - Harold and Joe

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Friday, 27 July 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

I am as corny indie as they come and so it's remarkable to me that "Groove Is In The Heart" and "Everybody Everybody" stand so far above the rest for me, competing only with "Here's Where The Story Ends."

But yeah, this thread is an unrelenting wave of "Wait, THAT TOO?"

I'll mention "You Are Loved" by Blue Aeroplanes, which I really, really like, but which probably wouldn't crack my top 10 of songs mentioned here.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 27 July 2012 01:55 (thirteen years ago)

Swagger was a good record!

:) Slack Motherfucker came out in 1990? Huh. I would have probably guessed a couple years later if asked. Such a great song.

I think I spent more time listening to the radio in 1990 than in any other year. I love all these tracks, might have to make a CD-R or Youtube playlist or something.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 27 July 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

there are some better songs but i never heard kyper's "tic-tac-toe" until very recently so i just want to give it a shout out

Oooh... forgot "Metropolis" by the Church, but I think someone mentioned that above. Great track.

LimbsKing, Friday, 27 July 2012 13:18 (thirteen years ago)

thank providence for this thread -- i am scanning photos from a 1990 yearbook, and this is just the soundtrack i need to figure out which pictures are the best.

Metropolis is one of my very favorites. That's why I piped up.

urban dance squad's "deeper shade of soul" kinda ruled my 1990

bb, Friday, 27 July 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

I love this year so hard.. I wish I could count nirvana "In Bloom" for this.. it was on a sub pop VHS that came out in 1990..

if that doesn't count I'll have to go with "poison."

billstevejim, Saturday, 28 July 2012 00:20 (thirteen years ago)

considering that amerikkka's most wanted came out this year, there's no question to me about the best 10 or so songs

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Saturday, 28 July 2012 00:41 (thirteen years ago)

"jealousy" by pet shop boys another one i loved at the time. i mean i still love just don't hear it like i heard it then. i had to check to make sure it was 1990 and it was one of those cases where the album came out in 1990 but the single (which was different than the album version) came out in 1991. i think i've got that straight. come to think of it, "so hard" and "being boring" would be on any 1990 list i made.

scott seward, Saturday, 28 July 2012 01:30 (thirteen years ago)

billstevejim, Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

Silver lining!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

As Ned mentioned earlier, My Bloody Valentine's "Soon" is the best song ever recorded, and so it's definitely the best thing to come out in 1990.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:32 (thirteen years ago)

after Janet Jackson's "Escapade."

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

LimbsKing, Friday, 3 August 2012 13:58 (thirteen years ago)

I wish there was a radio format that only played pop music from 1989 to 1991.. i have a spotify playlist for this but radio is more unpredictable.

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

as long as Calloway's "I Wanna Be Rich" isn't on that list.
