was it blur or bush who were listening to nothing but fugazi in order to prep for their followup album?
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 02:35 (thirteen years ago)
Also, is it just my local radio stations, or did both "Machinehead" and "Greedy Fly" become modern rock playlist staples YEARS after they were released, after being relatively ignored when they were new?
― cwkiii, Tuesday, July 24, 2012 8:49 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark
i think it's just you because ime "Machinehead" was inescapable right away and "Greedy Fly" disappeared after it ceased to be new
― nakhchi little van (some dude), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 02:37 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, "Machinehead" was like Top 10 for the year '96 airplay-wise.
― Jeremy Spencer Slid in Class Today (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 03:04 (thirteen years ago)
i guess people felt it was better than the rest
― nakhchi little van (some dude), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 03:11 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah some time around 5 years ago they started playing "Greedy Fly" on a regular basis around here...weird...
― cwkiii, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 03:17 (thirteen years ago)
it's between comedown and swallowed on memory but tempted to revisit the whole kaboodle
― da croupier, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)
after that 90's poll i've been playing sixteen stone again
can't stand glycerine
little things was my favorite back then but now i can't really decide between that and comedown and machinehead, maybe even everything zen. i was going to drop zen and little things for the excessive screamy parts at the end but then realized comedown has it too, and maybe machinehead
― fauxmarc, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 03:35 (thirteen years ago)
I actually still like Comedown/Glycerine/Machinehead alright, but there's no way these guys ever had a song better than Mouth
― seapluspluspunk (loves laboured breathing), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 04:56 (thirteen years ago)
"Greedy Fly" -- extra points for that insanely over-the-top video where Gavin is birthed from a monster egg.

The "Mouth" remix being a hit was always hilarious to me because my high school buddy and I had a running thing going about how the original was the worst song on Razorblade Suitcase and one of the worst songs ever made. I'm not sure how we determined this - it was just one of those songs you love to heap with abuse, do mocking impressions of, etc. It is pretty dreary and shapeless. So then when a few months later or whenever they did the remix album it was a "hit" it was like, god, the whole world really is surreal and absurd amirite?
I am touched that anybody else likes "Letting the Cables Sleep." That is straight up guilty pleasure for me and I rarely use that term.

original "Mouth" - it really does suck, first two minutes sound like he's making the song up as he goes along.
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)
Kind of in disbelief Bush released a single called "Baby Come Home"
― da croupier, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:21 (thirteen years ago)
i mean at least title it "babycomehome" guys
― da croupier, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:22 (thirteen years ago)
babyhome.com, from their "electronica" phase
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:25 (thirteen years ago)
Seeing it at the bottom of the list there made me think it was like, the tacked-on new single for the greatest hits, or something from a Christmas album, or their "Last Kiss" non-album cover of some old love song....but no, it is a single from an album apparently called "The Sea of Memories," and it showcases their new, 2000s-ready streamlined rock sound. Verse is basically a line-by-line rewrite of "Everything Zen" though in terms of phrasing and emphasis.

Their next move should be Coldplay covers or the Rapture or something I think.
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:29 (thirteen years ago)
that song is hookier than I would have expected, but oh man i do NOT approve of the new guitarist's look.
― da croupier, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:33 (thirteen years ago)
Great Bush song from the "Mallrats" soundtrack -- "Bubbles." Pretty good for them.

I've got to rock it old school and pick "Everything Zen."

― Clarke B., Wednesday, 25 July 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)
I'm also right in the middle of Joe Carducci's Rock and the Pop Narcotic right now so I'm sure some of my vitriol toward this band is coming from having absorbed his ideas in that book (as much as I disagree with lots of it)...

This thread and the fact that I heard "All Over You" not once but THREE times during a long drive last weekend has made me want to poll Live songs. I feel that such a poll must already exist but I can't find one. Now if you'd asked me last week what I though of Live I'd have given you the gas face but All Over You is an unexpected jam imo.

as hard as it would be to prove with the search function, i am reasonable sure we have never dedicated a thread to the band Live

would be into a Live poll though, same kinda deal as this one. Everclear can't be far behind. The ILM 90s alt-rock crew takeover continues! (also, "Selling the Drama" was a name-that-tune trivia answer last night and so this has been on my mind a little)
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 August 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

One of my friends gave me "16 Stone' for my birthday in college - it's the only time I've ever been openly pissed off about a birthday present. Mainly because a) he was kind of a dick anyway so he wouldn't take it badly and b) he knew my music tastes pretty well and I was furious that he thought I would like it, lol

i personally didn't expect "Swallowed" to beat 4/5ths of the Sixteen Stone singles and a song i've never heard of to beat 2/5ths of them!
― some dude, Friday, 10 August 2012 00:19 (thirteen years ago)
btw holy crap Razorblade Suitcase went 3x plat? i thought for sure it was a Fairweather Johnson but perhaps it's a New Jersey.

Letting the Cables Sleep 2wtf is this
― billstevejim, Friday, 10 August 2012 00:53 (thirteen years ago)
the third single from the album with "The Chemicals Between Us" on it, apparently.
would vote for almost anything over "Glycerine," including "Kiss The Rain"

The alt band's abrasive single is also about authenticity but it's less gendered and more tribal - more about making the audience feel like they and the band are still inside the avant garde club of the 'underground,' where dissonant scary stuff is shot in high-contrast, smeary, herky-jerky video, despite the major label marketing campaign and gigantic crossover hit waiting around the corner.

Six tracks in and I feel I can confidently say that Razorblade Suitcase is a better album than Secret Samadhi although jeez, it would not kill these guys to smile once in a while. Bush have more energy but everything is so joyless.
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 August 2012 22:26 (thirteen years ago)
Bush had a good sound and good tunes but Gavin is just an ugh of a vocalist

Glycerine is so terrible and just encouraged more terrible alt rockers to release middling songs with strings to make them more 'poignant'
― fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Saturday, 25 August 2018 18:37 (seven years ago)
Bush were fucking terrible from start to finish. Faux Cobain crap that the Americans seemed to lap up whereas they meant absolutely jack here outside of their one hit.
