We have this at the library I work at. The partrins love it and our usage is constantly increasing each month. It's limited to Sony titles (which actually envelops quite a umber of labels. This is a great service for libraries in that our users don't actually have to come to he library to benefit forms it's services. Same holds true for our downloadable e-book service.

that's not 'the libraries services' in that case, it's some website's services
― iatee, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:35 (thirteen years ago)
it's just not how we should be spending money allocated for libraries.
you're right, we should be hiring qualified library scientists armchair quarterbacks who don't understand what a "public space" is
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:35 (thirteen years ago)
that encyclopedia is not a 'library service', it's a product of some company called britannica
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:37 (thirteen years ago)
oh I'm sorry I thought public libraries were public spaces, please enlighten me about how that is no longer true
― iatee, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:37 (thirteen years ago)
Sorry meant to say "patrons" number (not umber.) and this is as valid a use of library budget money than anything else and plus, I am of the belief that libraries should concentrate on technology more and hire programmers rather than librarians. (and I'm a librarian.)
― kwhitehead, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:37 (thirteen years ago)
public space is a space used by the public, not a park. a swimming pool is a public space, true, but so is a city council meeting, which is why they broadcast them for free on television. the library of congress is a public space, which is why we can order books from them.
if the public cannot leave the home because of finances, health problems, transportation to reach the literal space of the library, then congrats to the library for extending "public space" into the homes of taxpayers who pay for the library via the internet
more like IDiatee imo

Definition
Areas of usageMost streets, including the pavement, are considered public space, as are town squares or parks. Government buildings which are open to the public, such as public libraries are public space. Although not considered public space, privately owned buildings or property visible from sidewalks and public thoroughfares may affect the public visual landscape, for example, by outdoor advertising.

i mean how do you want my grandfather's library to spend the money? relocating from a historic 50s ranch building to a walkable neighborhood?
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:42 (thirteen years ago)
no, I want it to spend money on community programs not mp3s
― iatee, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)
my grandfather had a stroke, he can't walk to the library. he can't afford to buy anything because he's trying to pay for end-of-life care out of social security, and he's a retired university professor. the library is six blocks from his house. should he sign up for a citycar membership so he can drive down there or is it cool for the library to try to expand their services a bit?
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:44 (thirteen years ago)
fuck your imaginary community you stupid shut-in
it's cool it just comes at the cost of other things, because libraries don't have infinite money
― iatee, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:44 (thirteen years ago)
you spout a lot of bullshit for someone who obviously lives in a bubble
yes but when people who would otherwise support your goals get done talking to you they just send money to a random SUV maker & buy a couple gallons of gas whether they need it or not
― tallarico dreams (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 23 July 2012 01:45 (thirteen years ago)
tell me about these "community programs" iatee

xp is that the community program where they hire bright young guys like you to supervise college-age volunteers who go to grandpa's house and read to him?
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:46 (thirteen years ago)
no, it's the community program where they hire the tons of under and unemployed people w/ library degrees
― iatee, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:46 (thirteen years ago)
which this webste is not going to help
more like commune-iatee programs

xp to do what iatee, my brother-in-law is an unemployed librarian
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:47 (thirteen years ago)
well ask him what he thinks about libraries spending their budgets on mp3s then
― iatee, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:47 (thirteen years ago)
what would he be doing, iatee?
btw have you worked in a library?
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:48 (thirteen years ago)
he would say it would be great, because they would have to hire a librarian to implement the service, just like teachers have to spend hours implementing online textbooks
i mean i suppose they could buy more books but the books they have already don't fit in the existing infrastructure and the # of patrons IS declining
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:49 (thirteen years ago)
ya that's certainly a job for life
― iatee, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:49 (thirteen years ago)
teaching, or librarianship?
have you worked in a library, iatee? or managed one?
maybe they could have a TED talk where iatee explains that people should move to cities with big majestic marble libraries, and walk to them, and use them as public space
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:50 (thirteen years ago)
you will not believe how many years i have worked in a library
Queens does a ton of community programs . . . a lot of money for the outside programs comes from grants. Also, programming is part of any librarian's job.
I doubt this service is impacting negatively on any library's budget line . . . it's probably some initiative of Sony to see if there is any point in trying to make their music available through libraries.
I think this is more akin to the databases that the libraries pay to license . . . and pass the savings on to the "consumer."
― Virginia Plain, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:51 (thirteen years ago)
wait a second ... you mean dewey decimal's not free?!
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:52 (thirteen years ago)
come on virginia, think about the queens library budget atm
― iatee, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:52 (thirteen years ago)
Also grabbed "Me and Mrs. Jones" and "Back Stabbers." This is nice. I'd seen posters of it in the library for months – they have a fucton of posters pushing this – but never took it up.
― in charge of refreshments tonight is (Abbbottt), Monday, 23 July 2012 01:52 (thirteen years ago)

― in charge of refreshments tonight is (Abbbottt), Monday, 23 July 2012 01:54 (thirteen years ago)
like the woodside library is closed the entire weekend but there's money in the budget for mp3s for people who aren't even going to visit the library? xp
― iatee, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:57 (thirteen years ago)
i feel like sony should be paying libraries to do this, if they're not. kind of like how mcdonalds will give free fries for 'read-a-book' programs etc...
― Philip Nunez, Monday, 23 July 2012 01:58 (thirteen years ago)
They're still patrons tho, if they have library cards, why not be able to use library services?xp
― in charge of refreshments tonight is (Abbbottt), Monday, 23 July 2012 01:59 (thirteen years ago)
If this service takes up even 1 % of QBPL's budget line, I would be shocked.
Yep, Abbottt, the service was a lot easier to use than I expected.
xp--Iattee, I don't think not implementing this service would give Queens the money it needs to have most of their libraries open on Saturdays. They're waiting for an economic turnaround and increased city funding.
People who don't visit the library have a right to use library services!
― Virginia Plain, Monday, 23 July 2012 02:00 (thirteen years ago)
like the woodside library is closed the entire weekend but there's money in the budget for mp3s for people who aren't even going to visit the library?
critical thinking exercise: under what conditions might this be a reasonable decision for a library director to make? have we considered all of the costs? do we have enough data? is it possible some of our assumptions are incorrect?
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 02:01 (thirteen years ago)
idk how this is different than online database access or anything, just a different type of file
― in charge of refreshments tonight is (Abbbottt), Monday, 23 July 2012 02:01 (thirteen years ago)
my local library spends between 10:1 and 5:1 on payroll vs materials
― the late great, Monday, 23 July 2012 02:06 (thirteen years ago)
yeah I'm not implying that this one service is why kids in woodside don't have access to the library during the weekend, I'm suggesting that it's a pretty lame business to get into when that's already the case. in short - if anyone thinks that small public libraries are gonna have a competitive advantage as information gatekeepers - of any sort - idk what to say. those days are over.
― iatee, Monday, 23 July 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)
