you don't have to like anything, and whether you like something is immaterial to whether it's "allowed" to be posted in "your" thread

exactly

me not liking it isn't the reason i'm giving for it not being posted in this thread, and i never said it was 'my' thread.

google deeznuts (D-40), Sunday, 22 July 2012 03:32 (thirteen years ago)

why dont you guys keep cosigning shit that i've already responded to tho makes a lot of sense!

google deeznuts (D-40), Sunday, 22 July 2012 03:32 (thirteen years ago)

you didn't use the word "allowed" either, i wasn't quoting you

nakhchi little van (some dude), Sunday, 22 July 2012 03:43 (thirteen years ago)

You could describe a bunch of songs on the Le1f record as having dance beats (although not in the Azaelia Banks sense, it's all def more hiphop-based than house-based) but "Wut" isn't really one of them. J0rdan otm. Also, how is his style "free associative"? It's not really based on non sequitors or stream of consciousness or anything like that.

this is a good post & at least gets me to reevaluate

the truth is i associate that synth-sax sound a lot more w/ east coast dance music; 90s house, sure, but moreso these days with hipster house approximating 90s house i.e. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGB9ZMIUGuw

i cant understand anything that happens during his double time sections. so maybe its not free associative there. but that's the same kind of technical overcompensation i dont like from iggy azealia. the lyrical style though, just stuff like 'neo nazi kamikaze want to firebomb the bomb-diggity' etc. just strikes me as kind of aimless lyricisms that das racist indulge in, the idea that its funny just because its a reference to something we're familiar with (or i we're not, it makes us want to be familiar so we can be cool).

again if there's another framework in which this stuff 'works' & 'functions' I'm open to that, i'm not interested in proving this is 'bad' or 'not worthy of acclaim' at all -- i think that would be privileged gatekeeping. on the other hand, i am interested in how boundaries are pushed w/out leaving a genre completely. i mean, maybe i'm wrong, maybe this will appeal to hip hop heads or maybe in five years nahright will look ridiculous for ignoring this seminal piece of hip hop but to me he doesnt make enough concessions to the broad rap fanbase to become that kind of crossover figure (& by extension qualify for inclusion in this thread)

fwiw i dont really care if ppl want to talk about him in this thread as much as i want to debate the idea of ppl talking about him in this thread or at least try & tease out what people like about his music. it seems like lately i keep running into this brick wall of THIS IS SO GOOD about everything black hippy / killer mike / le1f & i'd like to see some pushback. I kind of think ppl are afraid of appearing to be against gay rappers (& if i make an argument that appears that way then you absolutely should call me out on it) but I think it does a disservice to the music to not pick at it a little more than happens in other places. (ILX used to be so great at doing this!)

idk i guess there's probably an element of 'we should unite about this b/c hip hop blogs are already going to ignore it for obvi reasons' which is fair to a degree.

google deeznuts (D-40), Sunday, 22 July 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

Deej that's all fine but your initial post was totally dismissive and I don't know how we were supposed to remotely get anything other than you not liking it and trying to clown forks out of it

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 22 July 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

'wut' sounds like some azealia banks loft party dance music ish more than rap qua rap. or like, das racist-style loose rapping. idk. doesnt really belong itt imo.

this isn't 'totally dismissive' its genre pedantry

google deeznuts (D-40), Monday, 23 July 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

off topic, but i'm not 100 percent on what seapunk even is, could one of today's relevant young ppl explain to me? *adjusts hearing aid*

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 23 July 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

it's a new style of rap pioneered by an up and coming artist named chief keef

some dude obsessively tracking my posting habits is not so classic

google deeznuts (D-40), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1W5K4FPgR0

so raider klvn is basically tumblr rap right? breaking apart the DNA of influences on this one is kinda fun

google deeznuts (D-40), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 00:39 (thirteen years ago)

overall presentation & look is nu chicago ish, hook is nu chicago, rap flow is pure memphis, lyrics in the hook are pure raider klan -- like replace chicago street culture with cross-generational video game references

google deeznuts (D-40), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

noz has been arguing there's a pan-regional rap street movement that chicago is just one part of but i kind of think there's a distinct chi sound & feel which this is trading on. I guess depending on which side of that argument yr on, would decide whether you think this is representative

google deeznuts (D-40), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

some dude obsessively tracking my posting habits is not so classic

lol dude I haven't seen you on a thread in 6 months but I see you're still hauling out this classic deej strategy of accusing people of paying too much attention when they land a clean zing on yr jaw

tallarico dreams (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 00:47 (thirteen years ago)

'clean zing'? i'm not 'stewing' i returned to thread & there was no discussion so i took a cheap shot at seapunk.

google deeznuts (D-40), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 00:49 (thirteen years ago)

some dude's meta-analysis of my posting is near-constant

google deeznuts (D-40), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 00:49 (thirteen years ago)

I'm glad some dude's constant meta analysis isn't in YouTuube form

camp lo magellan (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 00:53 (thirteen years ago)

clean zing or lousy zing isn't really the point, the point is "this guy's tracking my posts!!!" is a transparent strategy you use when yr mad

some dude's meta-analysis of my posting is near-constant

I should say I don't have any idea about this & it could be true what do I know I don't really see you around here any more it just was a little lol that you were still pulling that "he's tracking my posts!" thing - that's one of your argumentative strategies. tiny lol while checkin the rap thread to see what's news nbd

tallarico dreams (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 00:56 (thirteen years ago)

it's possible i WOULD track deej's posts but we'll never know since our posts are all individually timestamped so it actually takes zero effort to see when they were made or how long after other posts they appeared

nakhchi little van (some dude), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 00:59 (thirteen years ago)

can we talk abt music instead of some dude's incredibly tiresome meta commentary

google deeznuts (D-40), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 01:10 (thirteen years ago)

you can't make yourself the center of attention and make threads about you and then cry foul when people talk about you fyi

nakhchi little van (some dude), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 01:12 (thirteen years ago)

I was zinging deej three mos ago :/

who's making himself the 'center of attention'? i'm making arguments about music. you keep acting like i'm calling this 'my' thread & making myself the center of attention, all i'm doing is talking abt the music we normally discuss & my response to it like anyone else would

google deeznuts (D-40), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 01:20 (thirteen years ago)

like, what will it take for you to 'win' this argument & stfu about non-music shit so we can talk about how seapunk is wack & raider klan is tumblr rap

google deeznuts (D-40), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 01:20 (thirteen years ago)

"gay people shouldn't rap, let me tell you about the klan"
