this is super-dope btw, esp the parts right before the chorus where it goes all double-time just for one line

i really don't like the drum sounds either - they're too loud and they kind of thud in a really unvibey way - cf how light and soft the percussion in "promise" is. iirc this is one of those things that repelled me about the production on take care as well.

and the song is just not there, god, my attention just wanders about 5 times in each verse.

Come to think of it, "Demonstrate" might be better than the entire oeuvres of Aaliyah and Ciara combined. Little to do with Jojo, though. It's all the genius of 40 Shebib.

it's in 4/4 but it has some nice syncopation

i didn't notice when jade alston released her video for searching - the song's ok and the video is ok - but she just released a video for Sober which is maybe the best song on the mixtape/ep, along with missing you lately and the intro.

Need to listen to all of these, but finally listening to K. Michelle's 0 Fucks Given, and it's a mixed bag but there's still a lot of promise here. Even the first track, 'U Gonna Learn Today' is 100% her. Even at the most shambolic, she's got a clearly defined persona and that goes a long way.

think i saw c&d recently refer to her as "hoodrat lounge singer k michelle", which naturally i very much enjoyed
