this is super-dope btw, esp the parts right before the chorus where it goes all double-time just for one line
― chain the color of am0n (The Reverend), Thursday, 19 July 2012 05:51 (thirteen years ago)
i really don't like the drum sounds either - they're too loud and they kind of thud in a really unvibey way - cf how light and soft the percussion in "promise" is. iirc this is one of those things that repelled me about the production on take care as well.
and the song is just not there, god, my attention just wanders about 5 times in each verse.
― bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Thursday, 19 July 2012 10:16 (thirteen years ago)
yeah it does need a big breakdown or something, gets a bit circular and anaemic
generally agree about 40 beats but jojo has enough about her to plump it up to an extent so to speak
it's good, flirts with dope, def not super-dope
― r|t|c, Thursday, 19 July 2012 10:59 (thirteen years ago)
It makes me think of "Final Warning" more than "Promise". :O
― chain the color of am0n (The Reverend), Thursday, 19 July 2012 19:43 (thirteen years ago)
yeah.... those guitar stutters are def "final warning".... not sure how i didn't place that
i think when the chorus opens up it resembles "promise" a bit

yes
― Al S. Burr! (k3vin k.), Thursday, 19 July 2012 22:55 (thirteen years ago)
these comparisons to all-time-classics are doing this song absolutely no favours you guys
― bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Friday, 20 July 2012 06:50 (thirteen years ago)
you know what totally bangs? this robin thicke single

old news i know but it never really caught my ear much when i listened to the album. really suits his voice well
― Al S. Burr! (k3vin k.), Friday, 20 July 2012 20:00 (thirteen years ago)
Gonna save myself the embarrassment of trying to embed a Bandcamp track here (can it be done?) and just link to the page, but this Melodie "Classic Love" track strikes me as a better stab at '70s soul than most of the R. Kelly album

Come to think of it, "Demonstrate" might be better than the entire oeuvres of Aaliyah and Ciara combined. Little to do with Jojo, though. It's all the genius of 40 Shebib.
― chain the color of am0n (The Reverend), Friday, 20 July 2012 21:42 (thirteen years ago)
this robin t is quite good in his usual sort of way
― chain the color of am0n (The Reverend), Friday, 20 July 2012 22:02 (thirteen years ago)
evan that melodie song is awesome, gonna download that EP
don't know a thing about time signatures but its pace is great, the thing is just in motion
― Al S. Burr! (k3vin k.), Saturday, 21 July 2012 02:07 (thirteen years ago)
it's in 4/4 but it has some nice syncopation
― Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Saturday, 21 July 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)
i didn't notice when jade alston released her video for searching - the song's ok and the video is ok - but she just released a video for Sober which is maybe the best song on the mixtape/ep, along with missing you lately and the intro.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZswiRYzmyY&feature=plcp
video is a blast in a budget sort of way, the track is still fire.
uh huh / i do it like this / i get sober by shaking my hips
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 23 July 2012 03:54 (thirteen years ago)
That is really fun; probably the first thing I've seen that sells Jade Alston as an artist a lot of people would be interested in and not just a niche act
― Evan R, Monday, 23 July 2012 18:12 (thirteen years ago)
Ha, I like that song but "R&B as Rich Harrison would know it" seems about as far away from the zeitgeist as possible in 2012, the very definition of niche. This seems a lot closer:

Ha, and as if on cue, Popdust chimes in with an endorsement of "Sober." http://popdust.com/2012/07/23/three-awesome-tracks-jade-alston-cinnamon-girl-hanna/
I do like "Searching," but the crossover appeal on that one is somewhere between zero and three dropped Twitter followers, depending on which scale you're using
― Evan R, Monday, 23 July 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)
At least that one sounds like it could get on r&b radio, they like that 40 Shebibified shit. I don't think there's a radio format right now that would go within a football field of "Sober". It sounds like she's trying to do 12% of Electrik Red numbers.
― The Reverend, Monday, 23 July 2012 20:01 (thirteen years ago)
i always thought "bill gates" sounded like the crossover hit in waiting on the alston mixtape
i like "sober" but there's something just a touch awkward about it, like it goes a bit faster than she's comfortable with
― lex pretend, Monday, 23 July 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)
Seriously. Why are you all debating chart prospects instead of grabbing a hairbrush and chanting along to the bridge. ffs.
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 23 July 2012 22:18 (thirteen years ago)

― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 July 2012 03:15 (thirteen years ago)
beat is something i'd expect to hear on an azealia record. great chorus tho.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 July 2012 03:16 (thirteen years ago)
also sorta reminds me of..... "bleeding love"
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 July 2012 03:19 (thirteen years ago)
hope everyone has heard that melodie song
― Al S. Burr! (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)
i listened to it, but i don't know if i heard it.
― nakhchi little van (some dude), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)
I get the "Bleeding Love" vibe from the chorus, too. Which is great, because I love that song. And I like the way it adds just a little bit of weight and melancholy to an otherwise light song

Oh my god it's R&B mixtape Hanukkah! So many new pretty good mixtapes this week I can't keep up with all of them! This is a great problem to have, obviously. Excited to play catchup.
Here's what we got, if y'all wanna check some of them out and help me out with recs:
Chantel - Back in the Day: Brandy/Aaliyah-ish, sounds nice at first grazeMateo - Suite 823: Sounds like dude's best work yet, but will that be enough to make people care about him?Lucille Ghatti - High Grade: Outsider, Jhene-esque stuff that doesn't hide behind fogginessVaughn Anthony - Life of a Player: John Legend's beefcake brother; he's fun in a Bobby V wayI/O - Isolation: Maybe Fortebowie-ish? Only better? I dunno, digging it

Need to listen to all of these, but finally listening to K. Michelle's 0 Fucks Given, and it's a mixed bag but there's still a lot of promise here. Even the first track, 'U Gonna Learn Today' is 100% her. Even at the most shambolic, she's got a clearly defined persona and that goes a long way.
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:42 (thirteen years ago)
think i saw c&d recently refer to her as "hoodrat lounge singer k michelle", which naturally i very much enjoyed
― r|t|c, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:52 (thirteen years ago)
she's not even entertainingly ratchet tho anyway
― r|t|c, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:53 (thirteen years ago)
am hearing this delivered in increasingly sober tones followed by a long pause and single gunshot sound
