ikonika's new i make lists EP is finally out and it's incredible, maybe the best thing she's done yet - the melodies are just mind-blowing, the way she makes the synths sing, and the amount of cavernous space around them...

Just came back from the Night Slugs/Fade To Mind showcase at SXSW. Saw Nguzunguzu, Kingdom w/Kelala, L-Vis and Bok Bok. The whole night was good, but L-Vis/Bok Bok were the highlight, and yes, they did Bring In Da Katz.

speaking of Bok, his new Fade to Mind mix is very good (and ends with 151 Feva Gang!)

saw Bok last night, he played a good but predictable set to a small, fairly wack crowd with too many dudes. I went to the monthly rare soul night at the same club last weekend and it was way more popping :/
― Fred by Durst (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 May 2013 17:15 (thirteen years ago)
what'd he play?
― the late great, Saturday, 4 May 2013 19:43 (thirteen years ago)
All the stuff I recognized was ns/ftm, some of which was p old ("irl" "stalker ha"), some new ("bank head", "ballad 4ad"). The stuff I didn't recognize was either on the techy side or ballroom trax
― Fred by Durst (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 May 2013 20:07 (thirteen years ago)
ah yeah
i've heard a ton of good things about bok bok as a DJ but have yet to hear a set that really blows me away
― the late great, Saturday, 4 May 2013 23:09 (thirteen years ago)
The other time I saw him (sept. '11) he was amazing tho
― Fred by Durst (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 May 2013 23:48 (thirteen years ago)
Heh. The promoter has euphemistically described last night's show as "cozy". And apparently RL Grime has sold out the same spot tonight.

classical curves i mean
Classical Curves is so weird but so good. Also really enjoying the new Egyptrixx album, feels a lot more intimate than I would expect from Night Slugs.
― boxedjoy, Sunday, 22 December 2013 20:51 (twelve years ago)
i haven't really figured it out yet
― the late great, Sunday, 22 December 2013 20:52 (twelve years ago)
I'm still trying to absorb it too. So far it strikes me as much more of a straight up techno direction compared to the last one.
― Ornate Coleman (Moodles), Monday, 23 December 2013 02:06 (twelve years ago)
their re-release of "icy lake" is the first NS/FTM release i've really loved in years

otoh their manifesto just confirms how much our aesthetics have diverged. couldn't be less interested in club music without melody or emotive artefacts
I kind of respect that manifesto and admire their attempt at aesthetic purity, but yeah, really not sure if it'll create stuff that's interesting to listen to.
I only really know NS through the twitter crew - do they all make Jersey House stuff now or is that just Deamonds?

this was a real "ambushed by unexpected emotion" album for me
on paper nothing about it should be my thing but it hits hard. the lyrics are great.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 09:04 (eleven years ago)
I loved Classical Curves but this is way better, although they are so different it feels silly trying to compare them.
― boxedjoy, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 22:23 (eleven years ago)
classical curves left me very cold at the time but has actually sort of clicked in the light of this!
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 22:44 (eleven years ago)
not heard the new one yet (why does night slugs' artwork seem so dull now?) but how could how we relate to the body or club thanz leave someone cold?
― StillAdvance, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 22:51 (eleven years ago)
no tunes, not very hooky, not very danceable, just sort of clanky and metallic
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 23:14 (eleven years ago)
not hooky, okay, i can see that, but those two songs had quite a lot going for them, sensual/warm textures-wise. no big tunes, sure, but enough other stuff in its place. never felt like it was dreary or lacking purpose/momentum, which is often what happens on dance albums. and if you like 80s R&B, i think you would be able to get behind them. not everything has to grab you by the balls!
― StillAdvance, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 23:25 (eleven years ago)
i wouldn't have listened to an album of 80s r&b instrumentals!
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 23:32 (eleven years ago)
but now you have the chance to! anyway, i get the criticisms of the album as a whole, but there are songs on there i think deserve to be heard in their own right. like, that kingdom track bankhead is one of the best things night slugs ever put out, and i consider those jam city songs of a piece with that. anyway, the new album seems to come with some ridiculous conceptual baggage but im hoping the actual music doesnt pay too much attention to it.

Despite the press materials dressing this up it is essentially an "angry and disillusioned young man rallies against society" album, the kind of thing that has always existed, just done differently and well.
I think Classical Curves makes more sense now its influence has entrenched itself in contemporary dance music. Not to say that it is singular and unique - there were plenty of acts doing similar things - but it exists at a very specific intersection of zones that seems a lot less unnatural now.
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 19 March 2015 11:51 (eleven years ago)
classical curves def took a lil while to click for me but when it did, hoooo boy
― bae sremmurd (monotony), Thursday, 19 March 2015 11:53 (eleven years ago)
Is this different in any significant way from the usual NS clanking murk or should I just not bother?
― Matt DC, Thursday, 19 March 2015 12:04 (eleven years ago)
it's completely unlike anything on NS to date. on paper it's even less my thing but idk, the alienation and disillusion aren't just in the press materials, they're in the very good lyrics as well, and it's ultimately a very optimistic album
