it's a very good rap.

the Lauer and Sugardaddy remixes are brilliant. Not too sure about this though

oh my god

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)

probably the worst tensnake work yet. one would expect this kind of track from a compilation at walmart titled "today's house anthems" or something.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:23 (thirteen years ago)

i generally like this guy's stuff but i saw him djing recently and it was terrrrible. for some reason felt the need to go for euphoric build & release every two minutes.

Perfect Chicken Forever (Merdeyeux), Friday, 2 November 2012 03:30 (thirteen years ago)

not his best by some distance but it's still pretty fun. needs a dub mix

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Friday, 2 November 2012 05:30 (thirteen years ago)

There is a dub mix I believe. I actually kinda like this but it's totally shameless.

Matt DC, Friday, 2 November 2012 11:52 (thirteen years ago)

that main hook is hilarious. so naff. i sort of like it in a lol way but it is definitely in the territory of music you hear from the one club in the tiny suburban town in dublin i'm from, on over 40s night.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Friday, 2 November 2012 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

Can't believe the guy who gave the world Coma Cat is going for obvious and bombastic...

That said, I kinda think this isn't anywhere nearly as naff as it wants to be, the actual song is a bit lacking.

I just heard this 58bpm song today. I think my mad love for Tensnake begins and ends with it.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 28 August 2013 15:56 (twelve years ago)

"See Right Through" is such a blatant Hot Creations rip, beginning to wonder if this guy has any individual sonic identity.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 28 August 2013 16:33 (twelve years ago)

thinking about it he was never really gonna be one of those producers with a peak lasting beyond a hot couple of years

lex pretend, Friday, 30 August 2013 13:51 (twelve years ago)

that said i quite like "58bpm"

lex pretend, Friday, 30 August 2013 13:51 (twelve years ago)

I've not really liked anything since Coma Cat but that and the run of singles leading up to it were fantastic.

Not sure he really has any real sonic identity of his own but when you're on a hot streak that doesn't matter.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 August 2013 14:14 (twelve years ago)

I mean of his own tracks, he's thrown out several good remixes since CC but his own stuff has been kinda lacking.

Matt DC, Friday, 30 August 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)

not feeling "See Right Through" or "58bpm" but this remix of the former is cool

that's not terrible but can't help but think he could have produced something far better with rodgers in tow. also it seems to be re-using the coma cat melody?

so the album is on spotify

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 13 March 2014 21:31 (twelve years ago)

it's... not worse than the aeroplane album? but still pretty much abandons anything that might have excited people about his first few years of singles

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 13 March 2014 21:42 (twelve years ago)

I'm only two tracks in but the forced 'ARE YOU ALL HAVING FUN YET?' rictus grin is so obvious.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 March 2014 18:00 (twelve years ago)

Got to track three and couldn't be fucked to continue. It was like a nu-disco office party thrown by an overenthusiastic sales director.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 March 2014 18:01 (twelve years ago)

totally disagree, love this album. p much every track superb, except the opening of the 3rd or 4th one with that daft reggae type bit but song gets good. billion steps above the ridiculous shite that the aeroplane album was and the daft punk album was. and not a super snoozefest like the todd terje album.

NI, Friday, 14 March 2014 18:20 (twelve years ago)

surprised mainline and coma cat weren't on it, surprised but pleased. the nile and fiora tracks are superb but im prob loving 58bpm the most

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV4BFdjjk3g&feature=kp

NI, Friday, 14 March 2014 18:22 (twelve years ago)

best album as a whole i've heard in years, baffled by the 'forced fun' sneer but hey whatever floats yer boat

NI, Friday, 14 March 2014 18:22 (twelve years ago)

i feel like that forced fun thing actually works on some of his tracks ("something about you" comes to mind), but here there is nothing to balance it out... it's just straight-up glossy discopop the whole way through.

i would prob be way more inclined to like this or be objective about it if i didn't have preconceived ideas about a tensnake album, viewed in the context of his career this just really feels like major mainstream edm moves. which, yknow, maybe it really works on those terms and i'm just not interested

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Friday, 14 March 2014 20:05 (twelve years ago)

58 bpm was one of my favorite tracks last year, but I was mostly lukewarm on his earlier stuff. He's definitely triangulating on a different audience now.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 March 2014 20:09 (twelve years ago)

well he's made a pop album yeah, if you're expecting some beardy headnod widdling you're prob gonna be disappointed xpost

NI, Friday, 14 March 2014 20:13 (twelve years ago)

58bpm was out last year? only ever dipped into the odd bit of his stuff in the past so not hugely invested in his career arc or whatever, to me this is exactly what i wanted - straight up catchy disco-influenced 2014 dance music

NI, Friday, 14 March 2014 20:15 (twelve years ago)

58bpm was paired with See Right Through as a single last summer/fall.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 March 2014 20:20 (twelve years ago)

lol at the idea that tensnake was ever "beardy headnod widdling"

He's definitely triangulating on a different audience now

for a while there it seemed like he could do this without completely abandoning what made those earlier singles great. but nope.

straight up catchy disco-influenced 2014 dance music

makes the classixx album look high-concept in comparison

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Friday, 14 March 2014 20:41 (twelve years ago)

So much of Glow sounds like—well, not like, but at least influenced by—Prince ca. 1980-85 that I don't give a shit about Tensnake's history. This is great stuff.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 March 2014 20:44 (twelve years ago)

meh, i don't see much prince influence here - especially compared to the glut of other acts that worship him. i have nothing against pop-disco but this is pretty damn corny pop-disco imo

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Friday, 14 March 2014 20:58 (twelve years ago)

So much Some of Glow

you know it's his biggest hit single, right? and it's his debut album, right?

NI, Sunday, 16 March 2014 02:45 (twelve years ago)

lol at the idea that tensnake was ever "beardy headnod widdling"

natural conclusion of matt dc's outrage at 'forced fun', apologies bro

NI, Sunday, 16 March 2014 02:48 (twelve years ago)

I was just pointing out it's not 2014 dance music

du mein bestie (micarl), Sunday, 16 March 2014 21:04 (twelve years ago)

mess of an album, it's oddly charmless despite its shininess. it doesn't even really succeed as pop.

lex pretend, Thursday, 20 March 2014 13:07 (twelve years ago)

I've listened to this a few times and it's not getting any better. The last three tracks are probably the strongest and there's nothing else as bad as the fuckawful Thabo and Jamie Liddell collaborations but it all feels so ROTE and by-numbers.

He's lost the kind of effortless melodic knack that he had at his peak (which I suppose is 07-10 or so). Like, listen to the bounciness and joyousness of the hook he laid under that Sally Shapiro remix and compare it to this.

It's nowhere near as bad as the Aeroplane album but it shares the same problem, which is this in-at-the-deep-end shift from great remixes and instrumental or sample-based tracks to "proper songwriting". And he can't write songs. Like, at all.

So much of Glow sounds like—well, not like, but at least influenced by—Prince ca. 1980-85 that I don't give a shit about Tensnake's history.

There are approximately 8 million records in this vein and really if I could wipe one musical thing off the planet it would be European disco dudes doing Prince homages. They can never pull it off. FWIW I don't find this that Princified either.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 March 2014 13:18 (twelve years ago)

It's also really obvious that Nile Rodgers has been tacked onto some of these tracks as an afterthought, when he should be the motor of any groove.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 March 2014 13:25 (twelve years ago)

it doesn't even really succeed as pop

i think this is all that really matters here. i could bitch about how this sounds like tensnake got swallowed whole by mainstream edm / bottle-service club culture blah blah but that's not really the problem, the problem is that tensnake has never proven that he's adept at this type of sugary vocal pop.

plenty of other disco-house producers have tried and failed at this type of thing - obv aeroplane but everytime i see juno's disco charts or browse soundcloud or w/e there's always some otherwise decent producer who just brought in a vocalist and clearly has no idea what he/she is doing writing "songs". the kathy diamond album was amazing (same with "whispers") but the past few years have made me loathe the words "featuring kathy diamond"

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:29 (twelve years ago)
