the first thing that happens after you listen to frank ocean is your phone rings. a voice will say: you have 1 week.

some of the well-meaning responses to this are pretty smh

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

it's weird that there seems to be a general sense that this is some sort of brilliant marketing thing which seems deeply counterintuitive for someone as on the rise as ocean

Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

i think it'll be good for him in the long run. a year ago there might have been more 'at risk' when "Novacane" was climbing the charts, but after that kinda stalled and none of his other songs hit remotely as big, Def Jam gave him a release date and let him drop a 10-minute single so it seems they decided he's not really a radio artist, and if there's not some attempt at crossover appeal something like this can only intensify his cult/critical following.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

Good discussion in this Ta-Nehisi Coates post.

Just heard "Thinking Bout You" on the radio last night.

The Reverend, Thursday, 5 July 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

some dude otm - this doesn't hurt Frank because he's not Trey Songz.

nostalgia ultra was probably my favorite album of the year. happy for him.

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 5 July 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

Frank's twitter timeline is really depressing right now

The Reverend, Thursday, 5 July 2012 19:58 (thirteen years ago)

that's not frank's twitter

i don't know that it's "brilliant" but making it a point to (sort of?) come out and associate yourself with the feelgood LET LOVE RINNGG blah blah homo camp is inherently going to be a marketing tactic as well no matter how earnest at this point.

fauxmarc, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

the feelgood LET LOVE RINNGG blah blah homo camp

wtf

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i don't agree w/ any of that

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

maybe now that he's being more honest and transparent with the public he might consider performing under his birth name, "frank ocean" really is just the corniest stage name imo

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:24 (thirteen years ago)

i think that's an incredibly cynical read of the situation. i also don't think that theory is supported by what actually happened.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

al, i think he legally changed his name to "frank ocean"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

so it's not marketing, it didn't get his name out there, people aren't talking about him more than before?

fauxmarc, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

al, i think he legally changed his name to "frank ocean"

well that makes it even sadder. i said 'birth name' anyway though.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

what's the endpoint of that argument? he really should have stayed closeted, you know, true to the music, no gimmicks...

xp well i like the name frank ocean fwiw.

goole, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

so it's not marketing, it didn't get his name out there, people aren't talking about him more than before?

― fauxmarc, Thursday, July 5, 2012 4:26 PM (10 seconds ago) Bookmark

alright, so what isn't marketing?

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

if my name was "lonny breaux" i would probably search for a stage name, too

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

why? i mean besides that people might struggle to pronounce the last name.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

people being all eye-rolly fake-industry types talking about this as a brilliant marketing move, could, conceivably, be half-right on some level, but are still being assholes

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

oceans are pretty gangster imo

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

c'mon s1ocki we wouldn't even KNOW you're canadian if you weren't blatantly using it to further your career

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

frank giant squids down there

goole, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

it's not an argument on my end, not saying he shouldn't have done it, he can do whatever he wants - i'm just stating an aspect of what happened that people are apparently opposed to believing, which is fine.

what isn't marketing? water gun fights by the pool, baking a cheesecake, there are a lot of options, but i'm not sure what good the answers to that are for.

fauxmarc, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

gonna change my last name to maple

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

the headband is definitely not marketing, he was born with that thing.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

so sick and tired of the Canadian agenda

like, I don't mind that Seth Rogan is Canadian but does he have to keep stuffing it under my toque

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

i'm just stating an aspect of what happened that people are apparently opposed to believing, which is fine.

this is pretty distorted. i don't think anyone is denying that his revelation may result in more of his albums being sold, but your initial post insinuated that it his decision to "come out" was (partly?) driven by marketing. and yeah, i don't believe that.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

pierre maple

am0n, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

it will help him market an album that includes love songs that refer to its subject by a male pronoun. but, y'know, art before commerce.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

as someone who never had go through something like hiding one's sexual identity and then come out about it, i'm certainly not going to monday morning quarterback how or why someone else's decision was made.

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

I invite FOXmarc to visit the gay thread anytime to watch how jolly this Lenny Kravitz homo camp can be in action.

also the phrase "marketing tactic"

now you're REALLY misreading my sarcastic tone, but not willfully (xpost)

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

A cicerone shouldn't overstep his (putatively) potable ambit, I guess. That's what I take from the indignant diorama Frank's orientation-teratism has metastatized from his extended mishpocha, from Speech to Lil B the now-debased. Prejudice sucks. Sure, all moral panics are eventually fungible, and uxorious gazumping has a dollar value when cathected out to the masses. Shit sells. But if there's one thing I learned as a glossolalic music critic back when Pitchfork was still a chimerical cryptopolis (before the pre-ordained ourobotic death spiral towards the idiolectic, go figure) it's that it's always better to play out your dangerous moves as a duodectet if you want to avoid the gravemen of the mythosphere. And that applies whether identity politics bibelots are set firmly aside or brought along for the ride, comprende? Fuck that shit, Frank. Deep in the pyramid they're playing your song.

Grampsy, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

thank you based luriqua

(putatively) potable

am0n, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

Frank Ocean is a great name, it's like he's the son of Billy Ocean.

EDB, Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

I think Grampsy has an acute case of thesaurus poisoning
