did you just stick your head out the window and yell "i'm recording a rap song in here, anyone wanna get on this open verse?"

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 July 2012 03:59 (thirteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure the second opener of this show is stevie d

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 July 2012 04:20 (thirteen years ago)

there are 38 people at this show (i counted by hand) so i think we may get to cypher with riff raff

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 July 2012 04:26 (thirteen years ago)

woah what venue?

♆ (gr8080), Monday, 2 July 2012 06:07 (thirteen years ago)

subterranean

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 July 2012 06:14 (thirteen years ago)

the show was predictably an outright catastrophe

riff came on three hours after doors (to 50 people) (on a sunday night) and played MAYBE a half hour. he only did songs from this year (cuz my gear, brain freeze, mike tyson) and new shit with the exception of "larry bird" which i think he performed begrudgingly after sensing frustration over the fact that he was gonna cut his set short after 25 mins.

but, what else was really gonna happen? i paid $10 and i can't say i didn't squeal like a child when riff finally came on stage. you get what you pay for, i guess? he should've freestyles tho.

the "DJ" was just some random dude on the "tour" playing songs off itunes while checking his phone and whenever he sensed the crowd getting restless or disinterested (relatively speaking, of course; no one was interested in the openers) he would drop the remix of "i don't like" and then act aggrieved when nobody really had a reaction. this happened three times. i don't think he had the original in his itunes.

riff did do one new song that sounded kinda amazing on a chamillionaire/z-ro tip. he said the video is dropping on tuesday.

(i wasn't actually mad @ u btw)

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 July 2012 13:04 (thirteen years ago)

if you address dudes by (longer than usual variations of) their real names people will think you're heated, those are the ilx rules

goonrise zingdom (some dude), Monday, 2 July 2012 13:11 (thirteen years ago)

otm

The Reverend, Monday, 2 July 2012 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

i was just looking for an excuse to use "alex"

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 July 2012 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

abandon al ships (some dude), Monday, 2 July 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

poor form, imo

The Reverend, Monday, 2 July 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

a "a consultant working with a few Sociologists from Berkeley" just sent me an email (well, emailed a letter to the village voice, which was emailed to me) asking if i can put him in touch with riff raff

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 July 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

first you get the hipsters, then you get the academics, something something power

some dude, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

Al you didn't want to go for a "riff raff collabing with Berkley Sociologists by the end of the week" joke?

♆ (gr8080), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 22:01 (thirteen years ago)

when the tpp's "riff raff collabo by the end of next week" crack on the kitty pryde thread was actual BEHIND schedule of what ended up happening i think that one expired. we're gonna need a bigger joke.

some dude, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

hahaha otm

♆ (gr8080), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)

Kind of worn out by riff raff. Like, I think hes funny and has some good songs but would expend about zero energy defending him. Like, end of day, its just fucking riff raff

littledotheyknow (D-40), Thursday, 5 July 2012 05:35 (thirteen years ago)

Agree, the novelty is wearing thin.

MIGHT SWANG THRU YOUR PROM WITH THE WAND IN MY PALM

J0rdan S., Friday, 6 July 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

his lyrics are better when they make sense, he goes off the deep end w/ absurdity too often

littledotheyknow (D-40), Friday, 6 July 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

i'd more or less agree w/ that

J0rdan S., Friday, 6 July 2012 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

he's a pretty decent singer! the melody on that hook is really good actually, the "who would expect i'm in a drop top six" part in nice

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 6 July 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it's just a really great chorus. when he does stuff like this there's always the small chance that it's nicked from some houston song that no one is remembering, but i don't think that's the case here.

J0rdan S., Friday, 6 July 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

why does he always only rap one verse per song ?

sisilafami, Friday, 6 July 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

he's (successfully) targeting the youtube generation's short attention span?

♆ (gr8080), Friday, 6 July 2012 21:39 (thirteen years ago)

lot of 50's early mixtape songs were like that, feel like there's a long tradition of one-verse-between-two-choruses quickie rap songs like that.

some dude, Friday, 6 July 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it didn't strike me as unusual

J0rdan S., Friday, 6 July 2012 21:42 (thirteen years ago)

i mean it's slightly a new development for guys like him and lil b to shoot videos for one verse songs but that'll happen when you shoot that many videos i guess

some dude, Friday, 6 July 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

his lyrics are better when they make sense, he goes off the deep end w/ absurdity too often

so otm

hardhouse banter (tpp), Friday, 6 July 2012 22:22 (thirteen years ago)

feeling him singing the hook tho. i just want riff raff to do classic swishahouse rap shit not this youtube bullshit but idk what can you do.

hardhouse banter (tpp), Friday, 6 July 2012 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

his best shit is stuff that sounds absurd but when you break it down you realize it makes beautiful sense

♆ (gr8080), Friday, 6 July 2012 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

he can be great and totally absurd at the same time but he's usually best when he finds a balance

J0rdan S., Saturday, 7 July 2012 01:03 (thirteen years ago)
