i still think that skip-y, click-y perlong-style percussion + dub bass + heavily overdone echo and reverb + diva/ragga samples would basically be the greatest music in the history of mankind.

i would prefer it without the slurry of "atmosphere." (though i like the burial album a lot.) plus he doesn't really have much bass does he? and while, yeah, his grooves are a lot more intricate than most dubstep i've heard lately, they're not even as intricate as old school garage let alone something like pantytec.

If you mean if you mean critical reaction, then the answer is no: way way more Skream pieces (or dubstep pieces which mention Skream) than anything on Boxcutter.

let's face it: no matter who it is, this genre gets about 1/1000th of the attention even something like klaxons will over here, which is a lot of webzine love and maybe a page, page and a half in spin.

My perspective on US critical attention is totally warped these days, because basically all I read is blogs, ILM, Flavorpill, Pitchfork and the occassional weekly (which is usually edited by someone whose blog I read or who posts to ILM haha.) I haven't picked up a domestic music mag in ages so I can't even imagine how much attention Klaxon will get and how that compares to other UK music.

seems pretty big up north, all this dubstep stuff. all i've heard about from hippy/crusty/forest party types for the last, like, 3 years.

i seem to dig completely different stuff to them tho, this guy played me a bunch of tracks a while ago, and i wasn't very good at listening at the time (he was scary, had scary strong weed) he seemed to enjoy the low end if it was all over the place.... the dubstep i've liked is where its super controlled, where you can hear the actual tones in the bass, i also like the filtering/screwing to be suble rather than the sloppy listen to all this fx kind of stuff.

Listening to the excellent Ammunition And Blackdown Present: The Roots Of Dubstep I couldn't help but lament the fact that the lively and inventive rhythmic side of this music is being increasingly cast aside for the instant gratification of the huge drop and the lfo'd sub-bass. I find myself more and more drawn to dubstep which steers away from the worship of the drop and takes a holistic approach to track building: Pinch's Qawwali, Shackleton's hand-percussion meditations, Burial's other-wordly productions, Skream's electro synths, Mala's upbeat dancefloor bombs, etc. Of course the halfstep wobbler is not something to be lamented wholesale ... My hope for 2007: balance.

Well when you listen to a song where absolutely fuck all of any interest happens, where there is no melody, no intricate drum programming etc., that's the only conclusion that can be drawn. I don't think it's the norm yet but Loefah/Coki copyists with nothing of their own to bring to the table seem to be a bit of a trend.

Boring wobblestep--- might be a bit better if they used more than about 3 notes, started deploying sabbath style riffs, but even most of the riffs are shit in that particular style. I was at he last DMZ and the quantity of that stuff with incredibly unintricate half step 70bpm drums actually bored me so much I was falling asleep on the dance floor, before deciding to leave (relatively) early.

well, technically there isn't a misplaced modifier - you can tell from the verb tense what the subject is ... but the line still scans funny

I was listening to the instrumental for "Girlfight" and thought pretty the same thing about dubstep. I mean why would a crunk/snap fan even bother.

Yeah, basically I'm hearing the same stuff when I listen to D1 as I do when I hear Aux 88 or Drexciya. Or Arpanet for that matter.

I'd like it to be genuinely techno inspired, as opposed to what drum and bass people think of when they say techy.

Back in the day Benga and Skream got called Croydon techno by grime Djs, thats how I first heard of them.
