The real question is, where's the 9? In the release date?

Leee, Monday, 10 December 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

Appareently a quaristice is something to do with 9 of... something. I forget what now, but it has a reference to 9, yeah :)

Trayce, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

that's very informative

haha sorry wrong thread!

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

Trayce, did your bf pull the trick yet? Im listening to the first track supposedly - Anterior - it's 11:25. It might be real I dunno. I don't have time to listen atm, I gotta study for finals.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

but it does sound like they are going back to their roots a bit.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

I don't have time to listen atm, I gotta study for finals.

Next time someone asks me to define Autechre I will say this.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 14 December 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

Anterior - I hope this isn't real. That is the chintziest melody EVER. I guess it improves at around 6:33 w/the more detailed interplay of pulses, but I dunno. I hope this is fake

Lowell N. Behold'n, Friday, 14 December 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

Well the tracklist put forth on this site doesn't mention any "Anterior." Note the number of 9s that appear in the song names.

Leee, Friday, 14 December 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

I'm afraid its nowt to do with me! Unless R's been up to shit I dont know about.

Trayce, Friday, 14 December 2007 06:28 (eighteen years ago)

This Anterior track (which is quite long, and I wouldnt ezpect it to be so long with the amount of tracks supposed to be on the album) seems "chinzy" in the sense that it is lacking all the modulation expected from the sounds I'm hearing. But compared to Vi Scose Poise of confield, maybe it isn't lacking as much as I think. Overall, it sounds like IDM my friend makes so I don't think it's real. And it doesn't have any epic quality to it.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 14 December 2007 08:33 (eighteen years ago)

The first half of "quaristice" sounds related to either "square" or "four", and 9 is a square number. Or, it's a double album, 9 is twice 4.5, and 4.5 is (the midpoint of) the interstice between four (and five). Or or, I'm making complete rubbish up. Yeah, that last one.

(Why have none of my IDM nerd internet pals who've been so excited about the last few while I've been going "eh" said anything about this? Are ae finally over even among the DSP-spotting community?)

oooooooh to listen or not to listen

ledge, Thursday, 24 January 2008 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Not. Her orgasmic presenting style is way too annoying.

StanM, Thursday, 24 January 2008 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

Remember that show from The Wire in which three tracks were played?

It's gone now but the internets don't forget.

The promo copies are watermarked hence traceable to the source, so i wouldn't expect leaks anytime soon.

Brakhage, Sunday, 27 January 2008 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

^ Thanks for the link.

I'm a little disappointed, though, at least upon first listen. Only the final track really grabbed me. All three seemed drenched in reverb, which normally I don't mind, and certainly isn't foreign to Autechre's music, but seemed out of place here. I guess those who were put off by their algorithm-centric compositions from the past decade or so might like this, as it's more stripped down and less wacked out. The problem is that they didn't really replace that space with anything compelling.

Z S, Sunday, 27 January 2008 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

slightly off topic, but does anyone have that internet dj mix autechre did a few years ago? heard a bit of it at the time and remember it being incredible.

Crackle Box, Monday, 28 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

hmm, google reveals they did lots of mixes a couple of years ago, the one i heard had miuzi weighs a ton on it.

google gave me this tracklist of some more of their mixes... want!

Is that the 7.5 hour thing? I've got it. Could ysi(although not right now) - if any of those sites allow >300meg files. Maybe someone else has a link.

Hmm I'm sure I remember writing a post just like this a year or so ago.

xpost - mines dated 2005-04-10.

and apparently it has the PE track -

megaupload goes up to 500meg, i'm sure i'll find it if i keep looking, slsk and google not being very helpful. would be very much appreciated if you get the chance to upload it though!

That was my first reaction as well … though to give them a break, I usually have to hear what they do with a very high bitrate to really get all the sonic details, and it also takes me a year to 'get' what they're doing – I didn't appreciate Untilted until recently.

This kind of judgment on first listening to lowbitrate samples is what the group itself is anxious to avoid I'd imagine.

True. When I was listening to it I kept daydreaming about the DJ saying "Whoops, somehow I was sitting on the reverb button! This is what the songs really sound like, sorry!", and then playing them again. I'll still give it a fair shot when it comes out. I probably need to revisit Untilted. I only gave it about a month before I gave up.

Download is available now @ bleep, double CD edition preorder & more:

http://www.autechre.ws/quaristice/mail/

StanM, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

That's limited edition double CD edition, by the way. 1000 ex.

StanM, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

i'm really liking those tracks in the Wire stream, the reverb stuff sounds great on them, kind of dubby. the stream made me more excited about the album.

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Limited edition double CD eh? Sold! (For £30! And to think I laughed at those Radiohead fans shelling out £40 for the box set.)

ledge, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, me too. and the download. (and that radiohead disc box) *sigh*

:-)

StanM, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

I thought about paying for the download - I want to hear it before the tour - but I don't feel like paying twice! Daresay it'll find its way onto the net somewhere.

ledge, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

... but the mp3 version contains track-by-track artwork by the Designers Republic!

er, like this one for track 10. Use your imagination for the other 19 tracks: vary the size and location of the small square and the colors (blue, white or black).

yay

StanM, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Out of any 2008 release that I spent a good chunk of time listening to, Quaristice is the one that completely dropped off the face of the Earth for me. And it was true for others, apparently - while 1678 other albums were mentioned in the 2008 Pazz+Jop list, Autechre makes no appearance.

Anyone still listening to this? What's the diagnosis (time of death, etc)?

the maximum value that ZS obtains given its constraint is 8 (Z S), Saturday, 24 January 2009 02:09 (seventeen years ago)

while 1678 other albums were mentioned in the 2008 Pazz+Jop list, Autechre makes no appearance.

Funny, I noticed this as well and almost noted it in the P&J thread.

ilxor, Saturday, 24 January 2009 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not a big Autechre fan, so haven't listened to this one more than, say, twice. Both times were the week I bought it, probably.

ilxor, Saturday, 24 January 2009 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

I kinda forgot about it too

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 January 2009 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

Well, one thing to remember P&J is a collection of top 10s. I can see how none of these 500 people thought it was one of the 10 best albums of the year, even those who liked it.

Mark, Saturday, 24 January 2009 04:21 (seventeen years ago)

I listened to a few tracks off it tonight on iTunes, still sounds just fine...?

ilxor, Saturday, 24 January 2009 05:29 (seventeen years ago)

but doesn't Pazz&Jop and other "best of year X" lists for that matter tend to favor albums that come out closer to the end of the year?

personally, I have listened to this album (and for that matter the new Squarepusher album) a lot this year (Itunes sez 11 times for Quaristice), and dug both records. But a certain number of folks that would have had more loyalty/interest say 5 years ago are just not noticing how truly strong these albums are.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Saturday, 24 January 2009 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

I listened to this album more times than it deserved. 901010 |-| etc. is a worthwhile track. and the opening wafts. otherwise it's garbage.

Lowell N. Behold'n, Saturday, 24 January 2009 08:08 (seventeen years ago)

I gave the album a good few listens and it didn't blow me away (tho' I certainly wouldn't say it's 'garbage') but then I basically overwhelmed myself by getting the album and the bonus disc and all the digital EPs and the Japanese bonus track - 45 tracks in total. Too much to take in. 'Altichyre' off the bonus disc is boooooootiful though.

ledge, Saturday, 24 January 2009 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

vinyl release for untiltled also in this week's newsletter

koogs, Friday, 5 September 2025 13:55 (nine months ago)

Some discussion in the c/d thread. Ok I just busted out the dusty backup drive from my long dead pc just to skip through it, honestly it just sounds like quaristice - so much for my ae fanboy reputation. Altichyre is beautiful though, get that one.

ledge, Friday, 5 September 2025 14:18 (nine months ago)

i think this is all new to me. but it'd help if i could read the fucking names on the original cd without giving myself a stroke.

koogs, Friday, 5 September 2025 14:21 (nine months ago)

and if the names weren't all like line-noise

koogs, Friday, 5 September 2025 14:24 (nine months ago)

I guess now that it's on streaming I should spend more time with versions, which I'd only listened to a handful of times on youtube. Quadrange is still my preferred quaristice for now.
