Appareently a quaristice is something to do with 9 of... something. I forget what now, but it has a reference to 9, yeah :)

Well the tracklist put forth on this site doesn't mention any "Anterior." Note the number of 9s that appear in the song names.

I'm afraid its nowt to do with me! Unless R's been up to shit I dont know about.

This Anterior track (which is quite long, and I wouldnt ezpect it to be so long with the amount of tracks supposed to be on the album) seems "chinzy" in the sense that it is lacking all the modulation expected from the sounds I'm hearing. But compared to Vi Scose Poise of confield, maybe it isn't lacking as much as I think. Overall, it sounds like IDM my friend makes so I don't think it's real. And it doesn't have any epic quality to it.

The first half of "quaristice" sounds related to either "square" or "four", and 9 is a square number. Or, it's a double album, 9 is twice 4.5, and 4.5 is (the midpoint of) the interstice between four (and five). Or or, I'm making complete rubbish up. Yeah, that last one.

(Why have none of my IDM nerd internet pals who've been so excited about the last few while I've been going "eh" said anything about this? Are ae finally over even among the DSP-spotting community?)

All three seemed drenched in reverb, which normally I don't mind, and certainly isn't foreign to Autechre's music, but seemed out of place here. I guess those who were put off by their algorithm-centric compositions from the past decade or so might like this, as it's more stripped down and less wacked out. The problem is that they didn't really replace that space with anything compelling.

slightly off topic, but does anyone have that internet dj mix autechre did a few years ago? heard a bit of it at the time and remember it being incredible.

That was my first reaction as well … though to give them a break, I usually have to hear what they do with a very high bitrate to really get all the sonic details, and it also takes me a year to 'get' what they're doing – I didn't appreciate Untilted until recently.

This kind of judgment on first listening to lowbitrate samples is what the group itself is anxious to avoid I'd imagine.

True. When I was listening to it I kept daydreaming about the DJ saying "Whoops, somehow I was sitting on the reverb button! This is what the songs really sound like, sorry!", and then playing them again. I'll still give it a fair shot when it comes out. I probably need to revisit Untilted. I only gave it about a month before I gave up.

Out of any 2008 release that I spent a good chunk of time listening to, Quaristice is the one that completely dropped off the face of the Earth for me. And it was true for others, apparently - while 1678 other albums were mentioned in the 2008 Pazz+Jop list, Autechre makes no appearance.

Anyone still listening to this? What's the diagnosis (time of death, etc)?

Funny, I noticed this as well and almost noted it in the P&J thread.

I'm not a big Autechre fan, so haven't listened to this one more than, say, twice. Both times were the week I bought it, probably.

Well, one thing to remember P&J is a collection of top 10s. I can see how none of these 500 people thought it was one of the 10 best albums of the year, even those who liked it.

but doesn't Pazz&Jop and other "best of year X" lists for that matter tend to favor albums that come out closer to the end of the year?

personally, I have listened to this album (and for that matter the new Squarepusher album) a lot this year (Itunes sez 11 times for Quaristice), and dug both records. But a certain number of folks that would have had more loyalty/interest say 5 years ago are just not noticing how truly strong these albums are.

I listened to this album more times than it deserved. 901010 |-| etc. is a worthwhile track. and the opening wafts. otherwise it's garbage.

I gave the album a good few listens and it didn't blow me away (tho' I certainly wouldn't say it's 'garbage') but then I basically overwhelmed myself by getting the album and the bonus disc and all the digital EPs and the Japanese bonus track - 45 tracks in total. Too much to take in. 'Altichyre' off the bonus disc is boooooootiful though.

I guess now that it's on streaming I should spend more time with versions, which I'd only listened to a handful of times on youtube. Quadrange is still my preferred quaristice for now.
