Juvenile album is pretty boring to me, but the Wacko/Skip section toward the end kinda redeems it. been hearing "Nolia Clap" a lot lately and thinking about what a classic it is.

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

From a historical perspective, Ice Cubes Amerikkkas Most Wanted is probably the most important album in the decline of regionalism, him going over to the bomb squad and doing a verse on PEs burn hollywood burn felt pretty important at the time, esp when east/west tensions were high and cube was perceived as gangsta and pe perceived as conscious

Also kool g raps live and let die embraced thicker west coast beats and had sir jinx productions

Actually the source review of ready to die was framed as biggie taking the dominant west coast style and adding an east coat spin to it

What about LL's Bigger And Deffer? He recorded that with some LA producers.

fanute gingrich (The Reverend), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:26 (fourteen years ago)

Juve album is pretty garbage really. 1st half outside of Power is a total loss. Still Here beat was ruined by the hook. idk, maybe 3 good tracks total.

Gotye Sports (It's In The Name) (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

Rev, yeah the LA Posse I think, still LA didn't really have a distinct identity then, or not unless it was super local and underground

So I don't think it was perceived in the same way, or that anyone thought LL was changing his style

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

LA had that whole Egyptian Lover/Uncle Jamm's Army/World Class Wreckin Cru electro-hop steez.

fanute gingrich (The Reverend), Thursday, 21 June 2012 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah but I don't know how much that traveled

I think around 84, 85 you could go to any city and kids were dressing like run dmc & LL

plus nothing on bigger and deffer sounded electro

He's got a great voice. Like a scarface/mystikal mix, but more sloppy. Love the melody on the hook.

i like how it sorta blurs the line between a hymn and being lyrical on a young dro tip

makin discussions with russians and still whippin cookies

or

seats television, the interior jellyfish

or

me and scoop, hoppin outta two coupes, in two suits, with more o's than two bowls of fruit loops

but it's still this real swampy spiritual kinda thing

J0rdan S., Sunday, 24 June 2012 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

lol parts of the video look so strange set against that track

bass, Sunday, 24 June 2012 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

i love it. like scarface with a lil goodie mob via some grindin'. and yeah def. pickig up on the dro or gucci style lyricism. thank u j0rdan.

i think the disconnect ive felt between the rap i hear & whats hot in nyc has never been more distant. did you guys know 'hands on the wheel' is IN ROTATION in new york?

littledotheyknow (D-40), Monday, 25 June 2012 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

ha i listen to hot 97 on my phone sometimes & i hear it as frequently as any other song. it's pretty bizarre.

J0rdan S., Monday, 25 June 2012 05:15 (fourteen years ago)

that fat joe/kanye song is pretty dope tho

the bubble of new york people who think a$ap rocky will be/already is a 'UGE 'UGE STAR is hilarious

some dude, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 15:32 (fourteen years ago)

i heard as recently as a few months ago the label was still pushing peso to national radio stations

littledotheyknow (D-40), Tuesday, 26 June 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

can't wait to hear this...

well they're pushing "goldie" now. which definitely has more traction nationally than "peso" ever had but is still not exactly a smash.

some dude, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

"goldie" is pretty bad... also seems like it's only marginally bigger than "peso"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 June 2012 21:32 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i hate the hook so much

some dude, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it's really bothersome -- someone should let him know that not every one of his singles can have a screwed hook

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 June 2012 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

gotta give it to kanye (or whoever figured out the hook) 'lamborghini merci / your chick she so thirsty' is 100x catchier than any screwed asap hook even if thats who they bit the idea from

littledotheyknow (D-40), Tuesday, 26 June 2012 21:42 (fourteen years ago)

5% or something of all rap songs have had screwed hooks since time immemorial, how is it even possible to 'bite' the 'idea' from one recent guy

some dude, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, does "mercy" directly rip an asap song? i missed that

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 June 2012 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

what contemporary acts have screwed hooks right now? name one

littledotheyknow (D-40), Tuesday, 26 June 2012 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

i won't doubt kanye's desire to rip something off from every hot young rapper but it seems a bit generous to credit the hook on "mercy" to asap rocky instead of the entire sound & culture that it (including asap rocky) is spawned from

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 June 2012 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

the-dream has done screwed hooks a bit no?

anyone listened to self made vol 2?

hardhouse banter (tpp), Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

I think its evident that bringing a screwed hook in 2012 is a reference to asap, unless youre a texas rapper

littledotheyknow (D-40), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 00:08 (fourteen years ago)

"anyone listened to self made vol 2?"

i did, prolly won't do it again.

sisilafami, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 00:13 (fourteen years ago)

eh, it's in every rap listener's vocabulary as much as sped-up soul samples and fucking record scratches at this point (xpost)

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 June 2012 00:54 (fourteen years ago)

didn't kayne have a bunch of screwed shit on MBDSLYTVDSP?

President Keyes, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

A lot of rappers were alive before this year so they might remember ye olden tymes when hooks were screwedethed and chopp-ed.
