Despite a slushy first trask, The Warning is their best.

The chants in "Let Him Be Me" are a little bit Howard Jones, a little bit "Self-Control."

This song is a perfect example of how often people forget there are two singers in this band, and they each bring their own sensibility to their respective tracks.

I get a hint of a, uh, sincere take on "Tarzan Boy".

It's not the same sample but it reminded me a bit of Enfants (Chants) by Villalobos. Over The Sky Was Pink obviously.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

ha yeah i immediately thought of Sky Was Pink when i heard that

♆ (gr8080), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 22:44 (thirteen years ago)

oh you mentioned that days ago too

♆ (gr8080), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 22:44 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, they've acknowledged it's a rip

Number None, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

♆ (gr8080), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

Reminds me a bit of the vocals in Wire's "Kidney Bingos."

can't find a direct quote but

Hot Chip's Joe Goddard tells Pitchfork that "Flutes" was one of the first songs that he and bandmate Alexis Taylor wrote for the new album. Its origin came from a sample of a two-note flute melody, its main inspiration from James Holden's remix of Nathan Fake's "The Sky Was Pink". The band chose the song as In Our Head's first song to be made public as a left turn for listeners: "I like it when bands come back with something that's fresh and unusual, you know?," Goddard said. "It's a more ambitious song than other things we've done in the past. I worked on it a lot to make sure it's constantly developing in an unusual way. I'm pleased with how it turned out."

Number None, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 23:44 (thirteen years ago)

re: Let Me Be Him/gr8080 - the "ooooo oooo ooo oh oh oh haay oh" parts remind me of something too, like phil collins or peter gabriel?

Feel like it may be something more recent like one of the songs on the Holy Ghost! album?

willem, Thursday, 21 June 2012 08:09 (thirteen years ago)

I thought of Phil Collins or Gabriel as well but tbh every second pop song that comes out these days seems to have an "ooooo oooo ooo oh oh oh haay oh" type chorus so it could be anything.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 June 2012 09:43 (thirteen years ago)

It's a bit like a Coldplay chant if we're being brutally honest, and nothing wrong with that.

Get wolves (DL), Thursday, 21 June 2012 10:06 (thirteen years ago)

In a post Arcade Fire world, every song has a wordless "ooooooh" or two on it.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 June 2012 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

Hacky Red One-type pop producers aiming for a stadium anthem with terrace chant crossover on every single record probably has a hand in that too.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

And yet despite that Hot Chip's sounds entirely fresh and endearing and thrilling to me.

Get wolves (DL), Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

No doubt because the occasion wordless "ooooh" is hardly the only hook each respective song has to offer.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 June 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

The synthy bits in "Flutes" initially reminded me of Booka Shade, but yeah, I can definitely see "The Sky Was Pink" as an overall inspiration.

Always have that problem with Wet Chip, why guys why

gonna send him to outer space, to hug another face (NickB), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

thats always been my ish but it isnt bothering me too much now

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

haha im glad i read that about flutes cuz otherwise i would have really been bugged by what it reminded me of

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

now i'm thinking that the "ooooo oooo ooo oh oh oh haay oh" part reminds me of a song from some commercial? like for a car or some foreign country's tourism ad?

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 21 June 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

some of Turner's high notes still irritate me, yes

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 June 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

this is pretty good you know

never really given these guys the time of day tbh

r|t|c, Thursday, 21 June 2012 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

This is a pretty neat album. Only place the singing got to me was "Look At Where We Are."

the magic butterfly made everyone feel relaxed (Abbbottt), Friday, 22 June 2012 01:52 (thirteen years ago)

do the rest of them do anything much? i haven't had any interest in them for the past few years but these links to let me be him and motion sickness have got me interested again. Tip!

jed_, Friday, 22 June 2012 01:58 (thirteen years ago)

do the rest of them do anything much?

The rest of the band? Everyone swaps instruments a lot. One guy used to do double duty in LCD Soundsystem. There are some songs (live) where pretty much everyone is playing a guitar or something, and other songs where everyone is playing synths.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 22 June 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

There are loads of nice touches throughout this - I'm all about the guitar solo and the disembodied girl's voice over the final track at the moment.

Also is the "I don't play no gabba" dude during Night And Day supposed to sound like Tricky?

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2012 09:00 (thirteen years ago)

amazed that this is gaining such traction - the production is improved in places but they're still as awful at ballads as ever and his voice is WORSE than ever. found it a real chore to listen to.

star-spangled david banner (lex pretend), Friday, 22 June 2012 09:04 (thirteen years ago)

Hah, I was thinking that a proper R&B singer could have made a hit out of 'Look At Where We Are'.

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2012 09:46 (thirteen years ago)

(I mean as a cover, not just singing over the same backing)

Matt DC, Friday, 22 June 2012 09:46 (thirteen years ago)

If an R&B singer who wasn't The Weeknd or Frank Ocean or Beyoncé covered it, it would be entirely ignored by the entire world.

star-spangled david banner (lex pretend), Friday, 22 June 2012 09:50 (thirteen years ago)

no way, ppl love that shit

remember when solange covered the dirty projectors

just sayin, Friday, 22 June 2012 10:05 (thirteen years ago)

I could imagine Brandy singing it. I agree it's a good song let down by his voice but when I had it on in the car my daughter, who ignored the rest of the album, said "I love this song. It's beautiful." So maybe the reedy slow jams are for the 5-year-old girl market.

Get wolves (DL), Friday, 22 June 2012 10:32 (thirteen years ago)

holy shit, i love "let me be him". it's very moving.

jed_, Friday, 22 June 2012 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

enjoying their NPR live streaming gig. "Ready for the Floor" -> "Everywhere" pretty great.

Ending with "Let Me Be Him".

The sound mix wasn't doing them any favors, but energetic nerds are always fun to watch.

Up here - another new drummer?! (no questo)

¥╡*ٍ*╞¥ (sic), Friday, 20 July 2012 06:25 (thirteen years ago)

jesus lex stay out of this thread if all you're gonna do is complain about the same shit you always complain about re: hot chip

heiswagger (rennavate), Friday, 20 July 2012 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

They had to recruit this guy to play drums for the U.S. dates. Current drummer had visa trouble and couldn't come over.

andrew m., Friday, 20 July 2012 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

pretty good at Pitchfork but the sound was a bit...muffled? I don't know.

― heiswagger (rennavate)

This is what he does. I was reading an old Robyn thread the other day and every other post was him telling everyone how much he can't stand her. This was going back to 2005 and five years later he's posting the same old shit, I can't believe he doesn't get bored of it.

Finally got to see them in Minnesota last week. They were great but the set seemed so short. Looking at the other recent setlists it seems they had to cut Hand Me Down Your Love and Let Me Be Him. Pretty gutted they didn't do Motion Sickness either as that has become my favourite on the new album.

Just saw the other day Look at Where we are is the next single. It's a great song but surely Don't Deny Your Heart is the obvious hit on the album?

Kitchen Person, Friday, 20 July 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

Seeing them tomorrow night! So excited.

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Saturday, 21 July 2012 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

they were great at pitchfork, i thought

the new songs sounded really good but they haven't really stretched them out or messed around w/ them like the older songs.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 21 July 2012 04:35 (thirteen years ago)

SO AMAZING. Chromatics were way better live than on record (and I love them already), and Hot Chip deserved everything I've heard about their live show. They did a Fleetwood Mac cover, they dropped Prince's "If I Was Your Girlfriend" into "Look At Where We Are," and made some tweaks to "Night and Day" that I really wish had made it onto the album- generally streamlining it, also adding this kind of...rattling/scratching sound (like Dennis Bovell's matchbox on "Newtown") and an ooo-weeee-ooooooo theremin-sounding synth line on the chorus.

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Sunday, 22 July 2012 04:04 (thirteen years ago)

So "Let Me Be Him" is the best thing ever, amirite?
