The chants in "Let Him Be Me" are a little bit Howard Jones, a little bit "Self-Control."

This song is a perfect example of how often people forget there are two singers in this band, and they each bring their own sensibility to their respective tracks.

I get a hint of a, uh, sincere take on "Tarzan Boy".

It's not the same sample but it reminded me a bit of Enfants (Chants) by Villalobos. Over The Sky Was Pink obviously.

Hot Chip's Joe Goddard tells Pitchfork that "Flutes" was one of the first songs that he and bandmate Alexis Taylor wrote for the new album. Its origin came from a sample of a two-note flute melody, its main inspiration from James Holden's remix of Nathan Fake's "The Sky Was Pink". The band chose the song as In Our Head's first song to be made public as a left turn for listeners: "I like it when bands come back with something that's fresh and unusual, you know?," Goddard said. "It's a more ambitious song than other things we've done in the past. I worked on it a lot to make sure it's constantly developing in an unusual way. I'm pleased with how it turned out."

I thought of Phil Collins or Gabriel as well but tbh every second pop song that comes out these days seems to have an "ooooo oooo ooo oh oh oh haay oh" type chorus so it could be anything.

It's a bit like a Coldplay chant if we're being brutally honest, and nothing wrong with that.

In a post Arcade Fire world, every song has a wordless "ooooooh" or two on it.

Hacky Red One-type pop producers aiming for a stadium anthem with terrace chant crossover on every single record probably has a hand in that too.

And yet despite that Hot Chip's sounds entirely fresh and endearing and thrilling to me.

No doubt because the occasion wordless "ooooh" is hardly the only hook each respective song has to offer.

The synthy bits in "Flutes" initially reminded me of Booka Shade, but yeah, I can definitely see "The Sky Was Pink" as an overall inspiration.

This is a pretty neat album. Only place the singing got to me was "Look At Where We Are."

The rest of the band? Everyone swaps instruments a lot. One guy used to do double duty in LCD Soundsystem. There are some songs (live) where pretty much everyone is playing a guitar or something, and other songs where everyone is playing synths.

There are loads of nice touches throughout this - I'm all about the guitar solo and the disembodied girl's voice over the final track at the moment.

Also is the "I don't play no gabba" dude during Night And Day supposed to sound like Tricky?

amazed that this is gaining such traction - the production is improved in places but they're still as awful at ballads as ever and his voice is WORSE than ever. found it a real chore to listen to.

Hah, I was thinking that a proper R&B singer could have made a hit out of 'Look At Where We Are'.

If an R&B singer who wasn't The Weeknd or Frank Ocean or Beyoncé covered it, it would be entirely ignored by the entire world.

I could imagine Brandy singing it. I agree it's a good song let down by his voice but when I had it on in the car my daughter, who ignored the rest of the album, said "I love this song. It's beautiful." So maybe the reedy slow jams are for the 5-year-old girl market.

enjoying their NPR live streaming gig. "Ready for the Floor" -> "Everywhere" pretty great.

They had to recruit this guy to play drums for the U.S. dates. Current drummer had visa trouble and couldn't come over.

This is what he does. I was reading an old Robyn thread the other day and every other post was him telling everyone how much he can't stand her. This was going back to 2005 and five years later he's posting the same old shit, I can't believe he doesn't get bored of it.

Finally got to see them in Minnesota last week. They were great but the set seemed so short. Looking at the other recent setlists it seems they had to cut Hand Me Down Your Love and Let Me Be Him. Pretty gutted they didn't do Motion Sickness either as that has become my favourite on the new album.

Just saw the other day Look at Where we are is the next single. It's a great song but surely Don't Deny Your Heart is the obvious hit on the album?

the new songs sounded really good but they haven't really stretched them out or messed around w/ them like the older songs.

SO AMAZING. Chromatics were way better live than on record (and I love them already), and Hot Chip deserved everything I've heard about their live show. They did a Fleetwood Mac cover, they dropped Prince's "If I Was Your Girlfriend" into "Look At Where We Are," and made some tweaks to "Night and Day" that I really wish had made it onto the album- generally streamlining it, also adding this kind of...rattling/scratching sound (like Dennis Bovell's matchbox on "Newtown") and an ooo-weeee-ooooooo theremin-sounding synth line on the chorus.

So "Let Me Be Him" is the best thing ever, amirite?
