Unless they really wish they could kiss Jay-Z's ass personally or something.
― da croupier, Thursday, 13 September 2007 02:43 (seventeen years ago) link
It's ass-kissing, but it's also kinda wounded. Which is either one of Kanye's most egregious "look at me and empathize with me" plays on the record, or it's pretty honest. Maybe it's tacky to write about someone is your hero and hurt your feelings, but he did, and there's a certain amount of balls to that whatever his intention.
― kenan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 03:39 (seventeen years ago) link
It just comes across as genuine and relatable, unlike a lot of the paparazzi-baiting on the rest of the album.

I guess I should just be grateful there aren't already four decades worth of songs with the word "Clive" in them.

Nice. Shows how it might have been, at least. Agreed with Vibe, that beat is crazy good.
― kenan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 11:17 (seventeen years ago) link
That backing track could be me farting over it, and you'd still say it's good.
― kenan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 11:18 (seventeen years ago) link
Yeah, I found "Big Brother" to be the most honest track on the record.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 September 2007 11:55 (seventeen years ago) link
"flashing lights" is totally this album's darkhorse

i'm sorry but when has good rap had anything to do with "honesty"

Is that Chris Martin playing the barrelhouse pianner? If so, I want him doing session work.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 13 September 2007 15:43 (seventeen years ago) link
anyway I agree that "Big Brother" is kinda lumbering and is probably gonna end up really overrated. but in the context of the album it really does cut through all the vague 'universal' stadium rock lyrics on the rest of the album. (xp)

big brother actually sounded awesome on 106 the other day. his voice was all hoarse and then he brought out jay and the crowd started to riot.
― Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 13 September 2007 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link
Yeah I guess it should've been obvious what was gonna happen when he started performing that song, but it was kind of exciting and unexpected when the DJ threw on "Encore" and Jay ran out.

basically if youre jammin this album but dont watch dave chappelle you kinda fucked up homie
― and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link
I would say it's obviously a Chappelle's Show/Wu Tang reference if it was any other rapper, but with Kanye these days you have to assume he'll leave no Eurohipster stone unturned.

A-Trak: Man, I introduced Kanye to Daft Punk, and, like, that movie Anchorman, you know, the singer Robyn, those Keffiyeh scarves, Asian girlfriends, and this dope messageboard called "I Love Music".

People who think Kanye is pandering to indie people with Daft Punk/PB&J samples as opposed to just absorbing things that are ubiquitous in the places he hangs out in = Not OTM
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link
i dont think hes pandering to 'indie people',hes just a walking snorg tee (c) shipley
― and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link
eh, although I called him "Euro-pandering" in another thread just now I do agree, but I think it kinda goes without saying. i mean it's not like there's a huge built-in audience for Daft Punk/Peanut Butter & Jelly that's there to cash in on. if anything he's going after the big white folks money with the Adam Levine/Chris Martin collabs.
(xpost lol what he said)
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:05 (seventeen years ago) link
I'm pretty sure Peanut Butter & Jelly is even more popular than Coldplay.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link
I thought for a second he meant Kanye sampled Peanut Butter Jelly Time.

the "good life" video is prob. not going to help kanye's indie-pandering image
― ^@^, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link
It's Peter Bjorn & John time.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link
you shouldnt underrate the influence of catchdubs blendizzle dudes tho, it may be a small portion of kanye's audience but its one with a direct line to lots of his press/media coverage - rapping over songs from the OC isnt just to get that college rap dough, its a good way to get critics to ignore your other shortcomings
― and what, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link
I like the audaciousness of having two of the most popular rnb singers of the moment on "Good Life" to sing one line each.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link
what the hell, when did everyone forget that Daft Punk is GREAT? Ubiquitous ans snorg are not the only options here.
― kenan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:16 (seventeen years ago) link
I had no idea what you were talking about until I looked it up, that's so weird. What lines are Ne-Yo and John Legend singing? I don't remember anything sounding like them on the song at all. (xp)
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link
moreover when did Daft Punk become shorthand for INDIE? I mean they've had gold plaques and videos all over MTV in America, they're not exactly below the mainstream radar.

i like the good life video. is that whole bape color pattern style thing really supposed to be credited to catchdubsizzle dudes? pharell's been rocking this sort of eccentric urban colorforms thing since most of those dudes were in college
― deej, Thursday, 13 September 2007 17:44 (seventeen years ago) link
the aesthetic runs deeper than 'lol hipsters' i mean, altho its not one i care for regardless
nobody is saying al's boy lacrate invented bape hoodies but kanye nerding it up & rapping over the garden state soundtrack cant hurt him in the corny hipster identification dept
