either way, i guarantee they spend a significant amount of time thinking about matt & kim

I want to like what they're doing, though. I think it's interesting to see video accompanying every track. Reminds me of this Anthony Rochester video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fClHllGaWH8
Which is also indiepop for the public radio audience. Somehow it's a lot more charming, though.
I think part of the charm of twee is that it's usually a modest and humble sound. Pamplamoose, however, are seething with false modesty but are actually really privileged, arrogant and narcissistic.

EDM-age Pomplamoose hasn't really lived up to my expectations. It seems like a whole new brand of irritation, which is less fun than it would be if they properly supplemented the irritation they already had going on.
Also it's kind of perversely enjoyable at points.

It's kind of cool how they switched out the music for each (singing Carly Rae over the Gotye verse and Gotye over the Carly Rae chorus). As a Tuesday diversion, pleasant enough.

Nonesuch President Bob Hurwitz recalls the first time he heard about Pomplamoose: “Brad Mehldau told me over lunch one day about these two extremely cool musicians in the Bay Area that had found a new and original way to get their music out. I looked them up online and the first video I watched was ‘My Favorite Things.’ It was clear they were onto something special.” He continues, “I tried to get in touch with them, to no avail, but my colleague Lenny Waronker, the great producer and executive from Warners, brought us together about a year ago. The minute I heard Nataly’s demos I knew she had an original voice and was someone we would love to have as part of the Nonesuch family.”
Dawn said of her decision to work with Nonesuch: “I can’t tell you how encouraging it is to be working with such passionate and intelligent people. People who care about music, and who are pleasantly old fashioned in the way they deal with artists.”

― sriracha bishop (get bent), Saturday, 6 October 2012 01:52 (eleven years ago) link
a $150K recording budget wouldn't be crazily large for a big label artist, even a minor one.
― has important things to say about gangnam style (Hurting 2), Saturday, 6 October 2012 02:06 (eleven years ago) link
at least it wouldn't have been back in the day, i don't know what it's like now.
150K does sound a bit high for an indie release, and it doesn't help that I fucking hate pomplamousse, but if it were an artist I like, maybe that artist is trying to achieve something that costs more money to achieve, and maybe that's worth it. Christ, how much did Steely Dan records cost to make, and were they not worth every penny? I cringe at the idea of them having to crowdfund -- "What the fuck, do these assholes really need like 50 different top studio guys on one record?" YES, they do need it, and they are assholes for it.

i quite enjoy that almost two years on the rolling pomplamoose thread still doesn't have 'pomplamoose' in the title. i personally find it by searching for 'insufferable'.
