yup, especially the first half:
1 2 3 x-x-xx-x-
it's like the go-to unfunky clave for fake latin beats. sure it can be voiced well or disguised/extended but i try to stay away from it when possible.

It works well in that track.

Those mala tracks sound great. I was wondering what he's been up to, so bring on the album.

I guess I should listen to those Mala tracks now. I only had time to listen to one track before I left for work and I was intrigued by the forbidden rhythm, which now that I think of it, might be kind of similar to a montuno rhythm in how it switches from on- to off-beat?
― they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Friday, 15 June 2012 01:38 (twelve years ago) link
ha ok, here is an audio example of the forbidden rhythm: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=h3JFEfdK_Ls#t=145s

― they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Friday, 15 June 2012 19:16 (twelve years ago) link
I think the difference is it being just one layer of polyrhythm in the Swindle versus being the sole point of rhythmic interest in the Billy Joel.
― they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Friday, 15 June 2012 19:18 (twelve years ago) link
can't believe nobody's ever sampled the first minute of that billy joel track, never heard that part before
― the late great, Friday, 15 June 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago) link
oh, you're just talking about the hat rhythm at the beginning of the swindle track?
bum bum badabum bum?
― the late great, Friday, 15 June 2012 19:23 (twelve years ago) link
had the same thought
nah, the main handclap rhythm that comes in at :38 and then gets passed around to the bass > synths > everything
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 15 June 2012 19:34 (twelve years ago) link
heh that rhythm is quite overused in grime

Finding the sudden popularity of "EDM" sort of depressing, but not nearly as depressing as all the crappy articles popping up in my Facebook page. This doesn't feel like winning.

This might have a little crossover with the Interzone Bubblers thread, but the new LOL Boys Enter the Unknown mix for UTTU is pretty stunning: http://boomkat.com/cds/533842-lol-boys-enter-the-unknown
It's got a lot of stuff going on in the mix but what strikes me most is how it reminds me a lot of 92/93 hardcore.

Generally I prefer Slackk's slightly housier productions to his stiff, stop-start grime-influenced bits but Blue Sleet has grown on me a lot, I like the way it builds up.

it's a fun little tune, doesn't seem especially "trap"-influenced to me compared to a lot of 2012 productions.
i love the new Airhead joint ("pyramid lake").

^ I get your point (erm or at least I think I do) but I feel that with Slackk and a lot of other recent stuff that draws on early grime the point is that it's done as an almost scholarly exercise you're supposed to recognize the reference points. To me it's almost the dance/electronic equivalent of 'record-collection rock', where informed listeners will take pleasure in spotting all the classic building blocks and the way they've recombined. In general I think a lot of the fans of Night Slugs and stuff with a similar aesthetic value it because it combines elements of stuff they were already into - grime, r&b, US regional club genres - and the fact that they've managed to achieve critical and dancefloor popularity with those elements feels to the long-termers like a kind of vindication.
Obv there's loads of projection and supposition in this argument - part of prob comes from my online interaction with Slackk who in his tasted comes over as an almost obsessively 'proper grime' kind of guy so it's hard not to see his doing genre exercises like this as an act of tribute on his part, paying homage to his roots. And obv the response will vary from listener to listener, and there will be some people out there going 'woah this is so fresh, how on earth did he come up with such striking synth and drum sounds?' in which case yeah you're perfectly entitled to point them straigh to things like the TNT mix (which I'm banging out right now).
― The Rise of Owl-Bass (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:10 (twelve years ago) link
Should be 'scholarly exercise where you're supposed to', posting in a bit of a rush.More generally I admire the certainty and purity of your tastes in these things, but for better or worse it's not how I am, if I were to draw lines with that degree of confidence it would feel dishonest.
― The Rise of Owl-Bass (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:14 (twelve years ago) link

Lunice, sounding like a twat
“(Mohawke) was saying, a lot of people on major labels, they know we’re around. They’re very well aware of us, but don’t even bother trying to contact us. They just straight frickin’ rob us, almost. I wouldn’t say ‘rob’ – (they) just get the idea, then get another producer to do it. And for a while we were like, ‘Whatever, we’ve got our own little scene going, I don’t mind and it’s all good”. But after that we were like, “Okay, okay, hold up, it’s getting a little too obvious!”“We didn’t think about breaking in fully until we did the TNGHT project together, and the response we got from rappers from that. We were like, “You know what? Let’s just straight bring it in. Straight bring it in. We’ve been doing this shit for years, and it’s not like we’re new or anything, it’s not like we’re new money shit, it’s not like we came out of the blue and we blew up like crazy. We’ve built a whole foundation of our work. So it’s about that time. I feel like that sort of movement is backed with all of our homies together, like: “This is us! You can’t do this shit! You can’t just take our ideas and come up with it all after all these years. We’re coming for you!’ (Laughs). That kind of thing.”
